Choose by the burden you need to solve: explicit stateful control, role-based agent collaboration, document retrieval, a cloud-provider ecosystem, or recovery from failures. One important distinction: Temporal is a durable-execution runtime that can work alongside an agent framework, not necessarily replace its agent abstractions.
How to choose a LangGraph alternative
Start with the workload and failure cases, not a feature checklist. An agent framework defines abstractions for agents, tools, state, or workflow control; a runtime may instead manage execution over time, retries, and recovery. Some products cover more than one layer, but they are not automatically interchangeable.

- State and recovery: Identify what persists, where it is stored, and whether an interrupted run can resume after a process failure, timeout, or deployment. Conversation or session memory is not the same thing as workflow checkpoints or durable execution.
- Control flow: Check how clearly you can represent branching, loops, handoffs, retries, and approval gates, and how much orchestration code your team must maintain.
- Human review: Confirm that a workflow can pause at the required point and resume with a decision or edited input. A review-task feature and a general-purpose interrupt mechanism may behave differently.
- Language and runtime: Python, .NET, and TypeScript support—and fit with your existing application—can matter more than a broad feature list.
- Cloud and provider fit: Separate basic provider support from deeper operational integration with Azure, Google Cloud, AWS, or a self-hosted environment.
- Production operations: Account for tracing, evaluation, deployment, scaling, and any external runtime or observability systems the framework does not provide.
- Workload shape: Document retrieval, structured delegation, long-running tasks, and tightly controlled state graphs can call for different abstractions.
LangChain’s alternatives comparison and its 2026 framework guide describe several of these options. LangChain makes LangGraph, so treat its descriptions as a vendor-authored feature overview, not an independent quality ranking or performance benchmark.
Which alternatives fit which workloads?
CrewAI: role-based teams and fast prototyping
CrewAI is worth considering when the work maps naturally to agents with distinct roles and responsibilities, and you want to prototype that team structure quickly. Its state persistence and human-review pattern differ from LangGraph’s typed-graph checkpointing and arbitrary interrupts, according to LangChain’s comparison. Those distinctions are reasons to inspect the actual implementation against your needs, not proof that one approach is better. Check CrewAI’s current documentation before relying on detailed assumptions about persistence or approvals.

Microsoft Agent Framework: Microsoft-stack teams
Microsoft Agent Framework is a candidate for teams invested in Microsoft’s tools, particularly those evaluating a move from AutoGen or Semantic Kernel. LangChain’s comparison reports graph workflows, Python and .NET support, and Azure AI Foundry integration. These are vendor-reported descriptions, not migration guarantees: before choosing it, confirm current release status, supported features, and migration guidance in Microsoft’s documentation.
LlamaIndex Workflows: document-heavy and retrieval-intensive systems
LlamaIndex Workflows are relevant when document ingestion, parsing, and retrieval are central to the agent system. LangChain describes them as typed, event-driven orchestration connected to the LlamaIndex data ecosystem, including LlamaParse. That ecosystem connection may reduce friction for document-centric workflows, but it does not establish that Workflows are the best choice for every stateful agent. Package availability can change; verify the official documentation for the language and package you plan to use. LangChain’s comparison says the TypeScript workflows-ts package is deprecated and points users to Python Workflows, a version-sensitive detail that should be confirmed before adopting it.

Google ADK: Google Cloud-native deployment
Google ADK may suit teams that want an agent development framework integrated with Google Cloud services. LangChain’s comparison describes a bundled runtime, debugging UI, session management, and deployment integrations including Cloud Run, GKE, and Vertex AI Agent Engine. These integrations are most relevant when Google Cloud is already the intended operating environment; teams deploying elsewhere should check which benefits remain available and what they would need to supply themselves.

OpenAI Agents SDK: focused assistants and delegation
The OpenAI Agents SDK is a candidate for tightly scoped assistants and delegation workflows where a relatively low-abstraction SDK is preferable to a more elaborate orchestration model. LangChain’s comparison says that workflows requiring durability across process restarts typically add a runtime such as Temporal or DBOS. Treat that as a prompt to validate the SDK’s current capabilities against OpenAI’s documentation and your recovery requirements, rather than as a blanket statement that the SDK cannot support persistence.
Mastra: TypeScript workflows and development tooling
Mastra is an option for TypeScript teams seeking workflows, memory, and development tooling together. Before adopting it, check the current package boundaries and licensing, and determine precisely what its state and memory features persist. A memory feature alone should not be assumed to provide durable recovery of an in-progress workflow.
Temporal: durable execution, often as a companion
Consider Temporal when long-running execution, retries, and resumption after a crash, timeout, or human-approval wait are the central requirements. Temporal’s official Durable AI documentation describes durable execution patterns and integrations with agent frameworks, including LangGraph. That makes Temporal a possible companion layer: keep the framework’s agent abstractions while using a runtime for execution that must survive interruptions. Confirm integration details and fit in the current Temporal documentation.

A small proof of concept using your own workflow is more useful than a generic demo. Include the cases that could make a production agent lose work, repeat an unsafe action, or wait indefinitely:
- Restart: Save or checkpoint a run, stop the process, then restart it. Verify what state is restored and whether execution resumes at the intended point.
- Tool failure: Make an external tool call fail, then inspect retry behavior. Check whether retries can repeat side effects and what controls you have to prevent that.
- Human approval: Pause at the required approval point, supply a decision or edited input, and confirm that the run resumes with the correct context.
- Trace completeness: Inspect whether traces show the state changes, tool calls, retries, handoffs, and human decisions needed to diagnose a run.
- Operational burden: Record which framework and runtime components you must deploy and maintain, including any separate systems for persistence, tracing, or evaluation.
These checks reveal whether a candidate’s state model matches your recovery needs and whether its operational footprint is acceptable; they are not a substitute for verifying current product capabilities and support commitments.

Why there is no evidence-based universal winner
LangChain’s 2026 guide is useful for identifying frameworks and comparing their stated features, but it comes from the maker of LangGraph and is not a neutral benchmark. The academic review “Agentic AI Frameworks: Architectures, Protocols, and Design Challenges,” published August 13, 2025, notes that systematic comparative literature remained limited and often focused on particular features. The reviewed material therefore supports choosing by workload, recovery model, language, and ecosystem—not declaring one alternative the best overall.
