For long-form prose, start with ordinary uncoated writing paper or stationery. Choose archival-quality paper when the manuscript itself needs to remain usable for a long time. “Cheese paper” is generally discussed as food wrapping, and the available evidence does not identify the specific product in this title or establish how it performs with a particular pen, ink, or printer.
Why cheese paper is not an established writing-paper choice
The available guidance treats cheese paper as food packaging. The American Cheese Society’s 2025 cheesemakers’ guide notes that choosing the wrong paper can affect cheese appearance or shelf life, but it does not describe writing performance. Without a brand, composition, coating, or other product details, it is not possible to say whether a particular cheese paper will take handwriting or printing well.

That distinction matters: paper intended to wrap food is not automatically a suitable or comfortable surface for drafting a manuscript. The evidence here does not compare cheese paper with writing paper for ink absorption, show-through, durability, or cost.

| Option | Best fit | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated writing paper or stationery | Everyday handwriting or printing | Bond paper and stationery are recognized printing and writing paper categories in Green Seal’s GS-7 standard. The standard does not establish a particular weight, surface, brand, ink performance, or price for your needs. Green Seal GS-7 |
| Archival-quality paper | A manuscript, record, or copy intended for long-term retention | The National Archives of Australia describes archival paper as formulated with chemical and physical properties intended to keep it usable over long periods. That makes it a preservation choice, not a requirement for every draft. National Archives of Australia guidance on paper |
| Tyvek or a similar paper-like synthetic | Specialized protection or conservation tasks, not an untested prose surface | Tyvek is high-density polyethylene, not paper. DuPont describes it as durable and water resistant; conservation guidance discusses specialized uses and recommends testing samples for ink soak-through or transfer. The available sources do not establish it as comfortable for long-form writing. DuPont: What is Tyvek?; Canadian Conservation Institute guidance on Tyvek |
What to check before committing to a paper
Paper choice depends on the writing task and method. The available sources support distinguishing drafting from preservation, but they do not provide product-level test results that rank paper surfaces or brands.

When archival paper is worth the distinction
Archival-quality paper is intended to remain usable over long periods, so it can make sense for a manuscript or copy whose continued usability matters. It is not shown to be necessary for routine drafts. U.S. National Archives advice about archival bond paper meeting ISO 9706 concerns printing facsimiles of unstable records, a preservation use case rather than an endorsement of that paper for creative writing. U.S. National Archives preservation FAQs
The Library of Congress cites the NISO permanent-paper specification ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R1997) as requiring a minimum 2% alkaline reserve, less than 1% lignin, and a pH range of 7.5 to 10.0. These are technical permanent-paper criteria; they measure neither writing comfort nor the performance of a particular consumer paper. Library of Congress paper FAQ

Do not misapply archival labeling rules to a new draft
U.S. National Archives guidance warns that kraft and colored papers can be acidic or unstable and that some dyes are water-sensitive in the context of archival enclosures. Its advice to use pencil rather than ordinary pens applies to labeling folders and making approved archival notations—not to writing a new manuscript on ordinary paper.
