The safest default is simple: a deployment account owns your LAMP application code, Apache and PHP run as the operating system’s web-service account, and that service account can write only to explicitly designated runtime directories. MySQL’s own mysql account owns its data and runtime files. This separation lets you deploy and audit changes without making the web process, every local user, or an attacker who compromises PHP able to rewrite the whole site.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The exact account names and paths vary by distribution and package. Debian-family systems commonly use www-data; Amazon Linux documentation commonly uses the apache group. Check the active service and PHP-FPM configuration before changing ownership.

LAMP combines Linux, Apache HTTP Server, MySQL and PHP. Linux applies an owner, group and “other” permission set to every file-system object. Apache serves requests, PHP code executes through Apache or PHP-FPM, and MySQL reads and writes its own database files. These are different jobs, so they should normally be different operating-system identities.
Linode’s 2021 LAMP guidance describes ownership and permissions as both an accountability mechanism and a layer of defense. A release account can be traced to a person or deployment job, while the web process receives only the access required to serve requests. If a vulnerable plugin or PHP script is exploited, narrow write permissions limit what that process can alter.

The three identities to plan for
| Role | Typical identity | Normal responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment or release operator | A named login or CI account such as deploy |
Owns application releases, edits code, rotates configuration and performs rollbacks. |
| Web-service process | www-data, apache, or a distribution-specific PHP-FPM user |
Reads application code and writes only to upload, cache, session, queue or generated-output directories. |
| Database service | mysql |
Reads configuration and binaries; writes the database data directory and selected runtime files. |
Do not assume that a username from one distribution applies to another. Confirm the effective identity with service-manager configuration and process listings before using chown or chmod.
How Linux evaluates a permission request
For each access attempt, Linux identifies the process user and groups, then evaluates the file owner entry, the group entry, or the “other” entry. It does not combine permissions from all three classes. A process that owns a file is evaluated as the owner even if a more permissive group entry exists.
| Object and bit | What it permits | Typical LAMP implication |
|---|---|---|
File read (r) |
Reading file contents | Apache/PHP generally needs this for PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and image files. |
File write (w) |
Changing file contents | Keep it away from code and configuration unless the application genuinely edits that file. |
File execute (x) |
Executing a binary or script as a program | Usually unnecessary for PHP source, templates and uploaded data files. |
Directory read (r) |
Listing names in the directory | Useful for application operations that enumerate files, but not enough to access them. |
Directory write (w) |
Creating, deleting or renaming entries | Controls whether uploads or generated files can be created and removed. |
Directory execute (x) |
Traversing the directory and accessing a known entry | Required on every parent directory in a path, even when the target file itself is readable. |
This distinction explains many confusing errors. A PHP process may have write permission on an existing file yet be unable to create a new file because its parent directory is not writable. Conversely, a writable directory lets the process delete or rename entries even when it cannot modify the contents of an existing file.
A secure application layout
Treat the release tree as deployment-managed and mostly read-only to Apache. Put the small set of runtime exceptions in separate directories. A practical layout is:

/var/www/app/releases/for immutable, versioned code releases./var/www/app/currentas a deployment-controlled symlink to the active release./var/www/app/shared/uploads/for user uploads./var/www/app/shared/cache/and/var/www/app/shared/sessions/for generated data./var/www/app/shared/generated/for thumbnails, exports or compiled assets.- A configuration location outside the document root for database credentials, private keys and environment files.
Apache/PHP should have read and traverse access to the release tree, but write access only to the shared directories that require it. Never place database passwords, private keys or other secrets in a web-readable directory. A web-server misconfiguration or accidental download rule can expose anything beneath the document root.
Choosing modes for code
There is no universal “LAMP mode.” Start with the smallest permissions that support your release process. For a deployment user that owns code and a web group that only reads it, directories commonly need owner read/write/execute and group read/execute; files commonly need owner read/write and group read. The exact numeric modes depend on whether a separate operations group, a deployment umask or an ACL is used.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not add write permission to the web group merely because Apache must read files. If PHP needs to generate a cache, grant that capability to the cache directory rather than to the entire application tree.
Configuring ownership step by step
1. Identify the active service account
Inspect the running process and service configuration rather than guessing:

systemctl cat apache2

On systems using PHP-FPM, inspect the pool configuration as well; the PHP worker can run as a different user or group from the Apache parent process. Use the identity shown by the active unit and pool, not an account copied from another server.
2. Assign release ownership
Make the deployment account the owner of the release files. Assign a read-oriented group used by the web service when that is how your distribution is configured:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo chown -R deploy:www-data /var/www/app/releases/2026-10-15

sudo find /var/www/app/releases/2026-10-15 -type f -exec chmod 0640 {} ;
Replace deploy and www-data with the identities confirmed on your host. The 2 in 2750 sets the set-group-ID bit on directories, causing new entries to inherit the directory’s group. This example gives the owner full access and the group read/traverse access; it does not make the web process a code editor.
3. Create narrowly writable runtime directories
Give Apache/PHP write access only where the application needs it. If both the deployment account and the web process must manage files, use a shared group and set-group-ID:

sudo install -d -o deploy -g www-data -m 2770 /var/www/app/shared/uploads
sudo install -d -o deploy -g www-data -m 2770 /var/www/app/shared/cache
sudo install -d -o deploy -g www-data -m 2770 /var/www/app/shared/generated
A mode such as 2770 means owner and group can list, traverse, create and remove entries while unrelated users have no access. The application’s umask determines the permissions on newly created files; review it so generated files are not accidentally world-readable.
4. Consider an ACL when two named roles need different access
Groups are often sufficient, but an access-control list can grant one deployment account and one service account precise rights without widening access for every group member:
sudo setfacl -m u:deploy:rwx,u:www-data:r-x /var/www/app/current
sudo setfacl -m u:www-data:rwx /var/www/app/shared/uploads
sudo setfacl -d -m u:www-data:rwx /var/www/app/shared/uploads
Review ACLs with getfacl. Default ACLs affect newly created entries, so document them alongside the deployment procedure and verify the application’s umask does not undo the intended result.
Why the Amazon Linux 2775 pattern is not universal
Amazon Linux documentation shows a collaborative layout in which /var/www is group-owned by apache and uses mode 2775. That lets a login user and the Apache group add, delete and edit document-root content. It can be convenient for a small server where both identities are deliberately trusted.
Best Value
It is a deployment pattern, not a requirement for every production application. Giving the web process group write access to the whole document root means a compromised PHP process may replace application code. For a larger or security-sensitive deployment, keep releases read-only to Apache and make only the required runtime subdirectories group-writable or ACL-managed.
Diagnosing “permission denied” without guessing
- Identify the exact failing path. Capture the path from the PHP error, Apache error log or application log. “Cannot write upload” and “cannot connect to the socket” may involve entirely different directories.
- Confirm the process identity. Use process listings,
systemctl status, the unit file and PHP-FPM pool settings. A command run as your login user does not prove that the web worker has the same access. - Walk every parent directory. Run
namei -l /var/www/app/shared/uploads/file.tmpto display ownership and modes for each component. A missing execute bit on/var,/var/wwwor an intermediate directory blocks traversal even if the final directory looks correct. - Classify the operation. Reading a file needs file read plus directory traversal. Creating, deleting or renaming needs write and execute on the parent directory. Editing an existing file needs file write as well.
- Grant the narrowest fix. Correct the owner, group, mode or ACL on the specific directory. Do not recursively make the entire tree writable to solve one upload path.
- Test as the service identity. For a temporary diagnostic, use an identity-preserving command such as
sudo -u www-data test -r /var/www/app/config.phpor create a harmless file in the designated runtime directory. Remove any test file afterward. - Check mandatory access controls. SELinux or AppArmor can deny an operation even when Unix owner and mode bits appear correct. Review the policy status and security audit logs, then apply a policy-appropriate fix instead of disabling the control.
- Retest and clean up. Confirm the application operation, review logs for a second denial, and remove temporary broad permissions or diagnostic files.
MySQL ownership and restrictive defaults
MySQL is not another directory that Apache should write. Oracle’s Secure Deployment Guide says most installation files can remain root-owned. Exceptions include the data directory, error log, mysql-files directory, PID file and socket; these resources need access by the operating-system mysql user. The MySQL user also needs read access to its configuration files and binaries.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The MySQL Reference Manual documents default UMASK=0640 and UMASK_DIR=0750; database directories are created with 0750 by default. These defaults are intentionally restrictive. If a table or file operation reports an operating-system permission error, inspect the effective umask, every parent directory, owner and group, the service unit and any SELinux or AppArmor rule before widening permissions.
Never solve a database error by making the data directory world-writable or by changing its owner to Apache. That breaks role separation and can expose or corrupt the database files.
Layouts compared by risk and maintenance
| Layout | Release owner | Apache/PHP write paths | Collaboration method | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Read-only web service | Deployment account | Only uploads, cache and generated output | Web group has read/traverse on code | Most production sites; limits damage from a compromised process. |
| Shared document root | Login user and Apache group | Most or all of /var/www |
Group ownership with set-group-ID, often mode 2775 |
Small trusted servers following the Amazon Linux pattern; higher blast radius. |
| ACL-controlled tree | Deployment account | Explicit directories or files | Named-user and default ACL entries | Teams where two named roles need different rights without a broad shared group. |
Evaluate a layout against six questions: who owns releases, who runs Apache/PHP, exactly which paths are writable, whether groups or ACLs are used, where secrets live, and whether SELinux or AppArmor adds restrictions.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
chmod -R 777: grants every local user and any compromised process read, write and traversal access across the tree. It hides the real defect and creates a large attack surface.- Making Apache own all application files: a web exploit can then rewrite code, configuration and deployment metadata.
- Changing only the final file: parent-directory traversal or directory write permissions may be the actual blocker.
- Using the wrong service account:
www-data,apacheand PHP-FPM pool users are not interchangeable constants. - Recursive ownership changes on system paths: a broad
chown -Rcan damage package-managed files, sockets or database data. - Putting secrets under the document root: a routing, backup or MIME mistake can make credentials downloadable.
- Ignoring inherited permissions: set-group-ID directories, default ACLs and umask determine permissions on files created later, not just the files present today.
Deployment and audit checklist
- Record the deployment account, Apache account, PHP-FPM account and MySQL account.
- Keep versioned code owned by deployment automation and read/traversable by the web service.
- List every directory that must be writable and state why it needs that access.
- Keep uploads and generated data separate from executable code where possible.
- Store database credentials and private keys outside web-readable paths.
- Use a dedicated group or ACL for collaboration; do not use world-writable modes.
- Verify set-group-ID behavior, default ACLs and umask on a newly created test file.
- Check SELinux or AppArmor policy when Unix modes look correct but access is still denied.
- After troubleshooting, remove temporary permissions and retain the successful settings in deployment documentation.
