Add a pathType field to every HTTP path in the Ingress manifest. For a route that should match a path and its subpaths, Prefix is usually the clearest choice. Also check that the backend fields match the API version in your YAML: networking.k8s.io/v1 uses a nested backend.service structure.
What the error means
The API server is rejecting an Ingress path because it has no explicit pathType. The reported message is: The Ingress "ingress-test" is invalid: spec.rules[0].http.paths[0].pathType: Required value: pathType must be specified. In an Ingress, each HTTP path needs a type that defines how the path is matched.

Kubernetes documents three allowed values: Prefix, Exact, and ImplementationSpecific. A path without one fails validation. See the Kubernetes Ingress documentation.

Put pathType alongside path and backend in each item under spec.rules[].http.paths[]. A minimal schema example is:

Replace the host, Service name, and port with values for your deployment. The example illustrates the API shape; it does not establish that those values exist in your cluster. With networking.k8s.io/v1, the backend Service is nested under backend.service, with its name and port specified there.
Choose the path type that matches your routing intent
| Value | Matching behavior | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
Prefix |
Matches URL path elements separated by /; matching is case-sensitive. |
The route should match a path and its subpaths. |
Exact |
Matches the complete URL path exactly; matching is case-sensitive. | A path such as /example should not also match /example/child. |
ImplementationSpecific |
Matching semantics are determined by the IngressClass implementation. | You intentionally rely on controller-specific behavior and have checked that controller’s documentation. |
These options are not interchangeable. Kubernetes notes that Ingress controller implementations can differ, so use ImplementationSpecific only when that delegated behavior is intended. Details are in the official path-matching documentation.
Why the LFS258 lab could show two errors
In a January 2021 Linux Foundation Forums discussion, an LFS258 learner reported that step 9 failed while creating ingress.rule.yaml on Kubernetes 1.19.6. The first error said that serviceName and servicePort were unknown fields in a networking.k8s.io/v1 backend. After the learner disabled client-side validation, the API server separately rejected the missing pathType. The learner reported success after changing the backend to the nested v1 Service form and adding pathType: ImplementationSpecific. The forum thread is historical context for that lab, not confirmation that every current handout or cluster uses the same steps.

Disabling client validation does not repair an invalid object; in that report, server-side validation still rejected it.

Validate the resource, then check routing
- Check the API version. Confirm the manifest’s
apiVersion, then use field names and nesting valid for that version. - Inspect every HTTP path. Under each
spec.rules[].http.paths[]entry, verify thatpath, pathType, andbackendare present and correctly nested. - Set the intended matching rule. Choose
Prefix,Exact, orImplementationSpecificbased on the desired URL behavior. - Check the backend. Confirm that the Service and its selected port exist in the relevant namespace.
- Check the controller and class. An Ingress API object alone does not provide routing. Confirm that an Ingress controller is installed and that the resource is associated with the intended IngressClass. Kubernetes documents IngressClass references and default-class behavior in its Ingress guidance.
- Apply and diagnose remaining routing problems. Once the manifest validates, inspect the created object. If traffic still does not route, review controller events and logs and consult that controller’s documentation for implementation-specific behavior.
The kubectl reference includes kubectl create ingress examples, including one specifying Prefix matching. The command can help create a simple resource, but a hand-authored manifest still needs fields valid for its API version.
