To become an administrator on a Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server, install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod, copy your SteamID from the status command, add that ID to SourceMod’s admin configuration, then reload the admin cache or restart the server. The shortest entry is "STEAM_x:x:xxxxxxxx" "99:z" in left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini.

Use the z flag only for a trusted owner: it is SourceMod’s root access and grants every permission. For moderators, assign individual flags such as kick, ban or map change instead. What “becoming admin” means in L4D2
Left 4 Dead 2 does not turn a player into a permanent administrator merely because that player is hosting a lobby. Administration on a dedicated server is supplied by a server-side permission system. SourceMod identifies an administrator by SteamID, matches that identity against an account file, and exposes commands according to the flags assigned to the account.
There are two practical control paths:
- SourceMod: a granular in-game administration layer. It can expose a menu and individual commands such as
sm_kick,sm_map,sm_cvarandsm_rcon. - RCON: a remote console connection protected by one server password. It gives console-level control rather than a separate permission for every SourceMod command.
For a public server, SourceMod is usually the safer day-to-day choice because each account can receive only the abilities it needs. Keep RCON and SourceMod root access for the owner or a very small number of trusted operators.

Installing both does not make every SourceMod administrator an RCON administrator. The m flag is required for SourceMod’s sm_rcon command, while a remote RCON client requires the server’s RCON password.
Prerequisites before editing permissions
- A dedicated L4D2 server that you operate or are explicitly authorized to moderate.
- File access to the server’s
left4dead2directory and permission to restart it. - MetaMod:Source and SourceMod installed in the server’s
left4dead2/addonsdirectory. - Your own SteamID, obtained from the server with
status. - A maintenance window or a way to reload admins after changing the files.
Do not apply these instructions to a server you do not control. Root permissions and RCON can affect every connected player and can change or stop the server.

SourceMod runs through MetaMod:Source, so install the two components in that order. Download the current packages from their official project distribution, preserve the package directory structure, and upload the contents into the server’s L4D2 folder rather than nesting the package in an extra directory.
- Stop the dedicated server before copying files.
- Install MetaMod:Source so its files are under
left4dead2/addons/metamodand its loader configuration is in the expectedaddonslocation. - Install SourceMod so the
left4dead2/addons/sourcemodtree, plugins and configuration files are present. - Start the server once. Watch the startup console for MetaMod and SourceMod load messages; a missing or misplaced loader normally appears here before any admin configuration can work.
- Stop the server again if you need to edit files safely, or leave it running and plan to use
sm_reloadadminsafter the edit.
The exact upload method differs between a self-managed machine and a managed host, but the relative path is the same. If SourceMod does not load, fix that installation problem first; an account entry cannot work when the plugin framework is absent.
Find the SteamID that SourceMod will recognize
Join the server with the Steam account that should receive access. Open the in-game developer console if enabled, or use the dedicated server console, and run:
statusThe output lists connected players and their SteamIDs. Copy the complete identifier exactly, including the STEAM_ prefix, underscores and colons. A typical identity has the form STEAM_x:x:xxxxxxxx; the letters and digits in your output are the values that belong in the account file.

- Use the SteamID printed for your current account, not a display name. Names can change and are not a reliable identity.
- Do not remove leading characters or convert the value by hand. SourceMod must match the authentication string it receives.
- If several people are connected, verify the player name beside the ID before copying it.
If status does not show a SteamID, confirm that you are connected to the dedicated server and not playing an offline or lobby-created local session. The account entry can be added only after you have a stable identity to match.
Quick setup with admins_simple.ini
For one or a few straightforward accounts, edit:
left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.iniAdd one line per administrator. Replace the example ID with the value returned by status:
"STEAM_x:x:xxxxxxxx" "99:z"The first quoted value is the authentication identity. The second contains an immunity level and flags separated by a colon. In this example, 99 is the immunity number and z is SourceMod root access.
Use a narrower flag whenever possible
Replace z with the least powerful combination that performs the job. For example, a moderator who only needs to remove disruptive players could use the kick flag:

Save the file without breaking its syntax
- Keep both values inside straight double quotation marks.
- Keep the colon between immunity and flags.
- Put each account on its own line.
- Do not add a comma, semicolon or trailing comment to the account line.
- Back up the file before making a large change.
Use admins.cfg for named, detailed accounts
The full configuration file is useful when you have several administrators, want readable names, or need separate immunity and flag settings. It is located at:
left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins.cfgAn account entry uses the Admins section, the auth method steam, the SteamID as identity, and a string of flags:

}The labels “Server owner” and “Moderator” are names for your administration list; SourceMod still authenticates each person by the SteamID in identity. Keep braces balanced and quote every key and value. A malformed block can prevent the file from loading, so restore the last known-good backup if SourceMod reports a parse error.
Reload the account list and verify access
After saving either file, reload the admin cache from the server console or through an existing administrative route:
sm_reloadadminsA full server restart also reloads the files. Reloading is faster and avoids disconnecting players, but a restart is useful when you have also installed or updated MetaMod, SourceMod or plugins.
- Run
sm_reloadadminsand check the console for a successful reload or a syntax error. - Reconnect to the server if your current session was authenticated before the account was added.
- Run
sm_admin. A working SourceMod account opens the administration menu. - Test only a command your assigned flags should allow, such as a harmless map or cvar operation on a private server.
If sm_admin says the command is unknown, the issue is not your SteamID entry: SourceMod or its base plugins have not loaded. If the menu opens but a command is denied, compare the command’s required flag with your account entry.

SourceMod’s configuration describes root as “a magic access flag that grants all permissions by default.” Treat that as unrestricted server control, not as a convenient default for every staff member. The API describes the RCON permission as “Use RCON” and the cheats permission as “Change sv_cheats and use its commands.”
Flags can be combined without spaces, as in cdg. If a plugin uses a custom permission, consult that plugin’s documentation before assuming that a standard flag will cover it.

Command names and access checks come from SourceMod’s base command set. A plugin can add commands with different names or requirements, so a missing command may indicate that its plugin is not installed rather than an authentication failure.

How to configure RCON instead
RCON is useful when you need to administer the server without joining the game. It is configured in the dedicated server configuration, normally left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Add a strong, unique password:
rcon_password "use-a-long-unique-secret"- Stop the server or edit
server.cfgduring a maintenance window. - Set
rcon_passwordto a secret that is not used for Steam, hosting, email or any other service. - Save the file and restart the server, or otherwise ensure the configuration is loaded before testing.
- In a Source RCON client, enter the server address, query/game port and the exact RCON password.
- Run a low-impact command such as
statusto confirm that the connection is controlling the intended server.
Anyone who obtains the RCON password can issue console commands with the authority of the server owner. Do not post it in chat, store it in a shared screenshot or place it in a public configuration repository. If it leaks, change the password and restart or reload the configuration so the old credential is no longer accepted.
SourceMod’s sm_rcon is not a second password. It is an in-game wrapper around console commands, and only accounts with the m flag should receive it. Give ordinary moderators specific flags instead of m or z.
Why sv_cheats keeps turning off
sv_cheats is server-wide. When enabled, every connected client can use the cheat commands permitted by the game; it is not a private switch that affects only the administrator who typed it. SourceMod assigns cheat control to flag n.

- Lobby reservation: the command reference notes that lobby reservation can reset
sv_cheats. A lobby handoff or reservation event can therefore undo a value you set manually. - Local sessions: the Left 4 Dead Wiki reports that lobby-created local sessions disable cheats. A local listen session is not a reliable environment for testing dedicated-server permissions.
- Wrong authority: a user without flag
nmay be authenticated but still be denied when changingsv_cheats.
For repeatable testing, use a private dedicated server, confirm that SourceMod has loaded, assign the test account the n flag (or temporarily use root), and run the command from the server context. Remove the flag afterward if the account does not need cheat control during normal play.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
“You do not have access to this command”
- Run
statusagain and compare the complete SteamID with the value in the file. - Check that the account uses
authsteaminadmins.cfg, or the two quoted fields inadmins_simple.ini. - Verify that the required flag is present:
cfor kick,dfor ban,gfor map change,hfor cvars,mfor SourceMod RCON, andnfor cheats. - Run
sm_reloadadmins, then reconnect and test again.
sm_admin is an unknown command
SourceMod’s base plugin set is not loaded, or the installation is in the wrong directory. Inspect the startup console for MetaMod and SourceMod load errors and confirm that the files are under left4dead2/addons, not inside an extra package folder.
The file change has no effect
Confirm that you edited the server’s active left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/configs directory, not a client installation or a different server instance. Check quotation marks, braces and the spelling of identity. Reload admins or restart the correct instance after saving.
One malformed entry breaks several administrators
Restore the last backup, then add entries one at a time. In admins.cfg, every opening brace needs a matching closing brace, and each administrator must be inside the top-level Admins block. A syntax error can prevent the complete file from being parsed.
RCON will not connect
- Make sure
rcon_passwordis set in the configuration used by the running server. - Check the address and port in the RCON client; connecting to another server with the same password can look like a permission problem.
- Restart after changing the password so the active process has loaded it.
- Check firewall and hosting-panel rules if the client cannot reach the server at all.
sv_cheats 1 immediately returns to zero
Test on a private dedicated server rather than a lobby-created local session, and account for lobby reservation resetting the variable. If the context is correct, check that the executing account has flag n or the intended controlled test account is using root only temporarily.

- Install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod under the dedicated server’s
left4dead2/addonsdirectory. - Start the server and verify both frameworks load in the console.
- Join with the account that needs access and run
status. - Copy that account’s complete SteamID.
- Choose
admins_simple.inifor a quick entry oradmins.cfgfor named, detailed accounts. - Assign the smallest useful flag set; use
zonly for unrestricted owners. - Save a syntactically valid file and run
sm_reloadadmins, or restart the server. - Reconnect and test
sm_adminplus one command appropriate to the assigned flags. - If remote control is required, set a unique
rcon_passwordseparately and test it from an RCON client. - Document who has root, RCON and cheat access, then remove permissions that are no longer needed.
