To disable BattlEye on an Arma 3 dedicated server, stop the server, open its server.cfg, change the BattlEye setting from 1 to 0, save the file, and restart the server. The usual form is BattlEye = 0;; some hosting documentation shows the same setting as battleye=0;. The change removes BattlEye’s anti-cheat protection, so use it only when you understand the security and community consequences.

What the BattlEye setting controls
server.cfg is the Arma 3 server configuration file that contains the BattlEye switch. A value of 1 enables BattlEye, while a value of 0 disables it. The setting does not take effect while the current server process is running; you must restart the server after saving the file.

Capitalization and spacing can differ between examples. Do not add a second BattlEye line if one already exists. Edit the existing entry, retain its terminating semicolon, and keep a backup of the original file so that you can restore the previous value quickly.
Before you change the file
Decide whether disabling BattlEye is appropriate
Disabling BattlEye removes the server’s anti-cheat protection. Hosting guidance generally treats this as a choice for private or heavily modded servers rather than an ordinary public server. Nitrado’s documentation specifically warns that disabling BattlEye is highly discouraged when a server is not password protected.

No published rate of BattlEye disablement or cheating incidents is established here, so do not treat the change as a harmless performance tweak. It is a security trade-off.
Record the current configuration
Before editing, copy or download server.cfg. If the file contains BattlEye = 1;, that copy gives you an exact rollback. Also note the server’s current state and any scheduled restart window so players are not surprised by the interruption.

Know how you access the server
Managed hosts commonly provide a control-panel file manager. A self-managed installation is normally edited through the server’s own file system or remote administration method. The interface names vary, but the file and setting are the same: locate the active Arma 3 instance’s server.cfg, not a similarly named template or an unrelated profile file.
Step-by-step: disable BattlEye in server.cfg
- Stop the Arma 3 server. Use the host control panel’s Stop or Shut down action, or stop the dedicated-server process through your normal administration method. Do not edit a file while the server is actively rewriting configuration.
- Open the active server.cfg. In a host panel, open the file manager and navigate to the configuration for the Arma 3 server instance. With direct access, open the instance’s
server.cfgin a plain-text editor. - Find the BattlEye entry. Search for
BattlEyeorbattleye. The enabled form commonly appears asBattlEye = 1;. - Change only the value. Replace the
1with0, producingBattlEye = 0;. If your existing file uses the compact form documented by Nitrado, usebattleye=0;instead. Preserve the key, punctuation, and semicolon. - Save the file. Confirm that the panel reports a successful save or that your editor has written the file to the server. If the panel offers a save-and-restart button, verify the contents before using it.
- Start the server again. Use Start or Restart in the host panel, or launch the server through your normal service manager. A restart is required before the new value is applied.
- Check the result. Confirm that the server reaches its normal running state and that your administration interface does not report a configuration parse error. The intended result is an Arma 3 server running without BattlEye.

Compact syntax

battleye=0;Nitrado’s guide uses this compact form. The safest approach is to change the value on the line already present in your file rather than creating a new variant elsewhere in the configuration.
What not to do
- Do not leave both an enabled and a disabled BattlEye line in the file. Duplicate keys can make it unclear which value the server reads.
- Do not remove the semicolon from the setting.
- Do not edit a sample, backup, or template file while the live instance reads a different
server.cfg. - Do not assume the change is live until the server has been restarted.
- Do not replace the official server executable with an unofficial patched binary. A forum thread advertising a modified
arma3server_x64.exewas not verified, and unofficial binaries carry unknown security risks.
Using a managed hosting control panel
Typical workflow
Hosting panels differ in layout, but the operation follows the same sequence: stop the instance, open its file manager, locate server.cfg, edit the BattlEye value, save, and start the instance. If the host provides a configuration editor rather than raw file access, look for a BattlEye toggle that writes the equivalent value of 0.

Some panels regenerate configuration files from settings stored elsewhere. If your change disappears after a restart, check whether the panel has a separate BattlEye option, an advanced-settings page, or a configuration generator. Set the option there, save it, and then inspect the resulting server.cfg. Do not repeatedly edit a generated file without checking the panel’s source setting.
Scheduled restarts
If the host restarts the server automatically, make the edit while the instance is stopped and verify the value before the next scheduled launch. A scheduled restart can apply the change, but it does not remove the need to save the file correctly.

How to verify that BattlEye is off
Verification should establish both that the file contains the intended value and that the running process started from that file.
- Reopen
server.cfgafter saving and confirm that the active line isBattlEye = 0;or the equivalent compact form. - Confirm that the server was stopped and started after the edit, rather than merely returning to an online state from a configuration screen.
- Use the host’s normal server-status or startup output to check that the instance starts successfully without reporting a BattlEye initialization failure. The exact status wording depends on the host.
- Connect with a test client in the same way your community normally connects. If the server cannot be reached, treat that as a general startup or access problem first; disabling BattlEye does not by itself document a client-side setting.
Whether clients must also disable BattlEye was not established by the available documentation. Do not promise players that a particular client-side change is required or sufficient without checking the current Arma 3 and host documentation for your build.

Common problems and fixes
The server will not start after the edit
- Reopen the file and check for a missing semicolon, an accidental quotation mark, or other characters added while editing.
- Make sure the value is exactly
0, not a word such asoff. - Confirm that you edited the live instance’s file, not a backup or template.
- Restore the saved copy of
server.cfgand start the server. If it then starts, reapply only the BattlEye value change.
The setting appears to have no effect
- Verify that the server was fully stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check whether the host’s control panel regenerated the file.
- Search the configuration for a second BattlEye entry and remove the duplicate after making a backup.
- Confirm that the panel is operating the Arma 3 instance you intended to change.
Players cannot join
First determine whether the server itself is running. If it is online but connections fail, investigate ordinary access, version, mod, password, and network causes separately. The available documentation does not establish a universal client-side BattlEye procedure, so avoid telling players to modify their installations based solely on this server-side edit.
The host does not expose server.cfg
Use the provider’s configuration editor or request the provider’s documented file-access method. The relevant setting remains the same, but some managed services restrict direct editing and may require a panel toggle or support request.

Security and administration after disabling BattlEye
Password-protect the server
A BattlEye-off server should be treated as a controlled environment. Set a strong server password and distribute it only to the intended group. Nitrado’s warning about non-password-protected servers is especially relevant to public listings: without BattlEye, anyone who can connect has fewer automated anti-cheat barriers.
Tell players what changed
State that the server is running without BattlEye before people join. Players may have different expectations about anti-cheat enforcement, and transparent labeling helps them choose whether the environment is appropriate.
Increase manual oversight
Disabling an automated anti-cheat layer shifts more responsibility to administrators. Restrict access, watch for suspicious behavior, maintain backups, and be prepared to remove disruptive players. These controls do not recreate BattlEye’s protection; they reduce exposure while the setting is off.
Use the shortest practical exception
If the purpose is testing a mod or troubleshooting a private setup, leave BattlEye disabled only for that activity. Once testing ends, restore the value to 1 and restart rather than leaving a temporary exception in a permanent public configuration.
How to re-enable BattlEye
- Stop the server.
- Open the active
server.cfg. - Change
BattlEye = 0;toBattlEye = 1;, or changebattleye=0;tobattleye=1;while preserving the file’s existing style. - Save the file and confirm that no duplicate BattlEye line exists.
- Start or restart the server.
- Verify that the server reaches its normal running state and that your status or startup information shows no BattlEye startup problem.
Restoring the value does not require an unofficial executable or a separate patch. The configuration change in the opposite direction is the documented rollback.
Version and documentation caveats
Hosting guides describing this setting range from weeks old to several years old, and Arma 3 builds can change. The syntax shown here is the commonly documented form, but confirm the current server.cfg reference in Bohemia Interactive’s official Arma 3 server documentation for the build you operate. If your host supplies a current configuration guide, follow its file path and restart procedure while retaining the same value change.
The available material does not establish a statistic for cheating, a guaranteed compatibility result for every mod, or a universal rule about client-side BattlEye settings. Treat those as configuration-specific questions rather than assumptions.
