Their combination appears in a recent job-posting sample, and Kubernetes is widely used in production—but no evidence shows that every cloud role requires all three or that learning them guarantees a job.
What each skill does—and why the combination matters
- AWS: a cloud platform with infrastructure and managed services. Knowing AWS helps you understand where applications and supporting resources run.
- Terraform: infrastructure-as-code tooling for describing and automating infrastructure. It helps make environments repeatable rather than relying only on manual setup.
- Kubernetes: a platform for deploying and operating containerized applications across a cluster. It addresses workload orchestration, not the same problem as provisioning cloud infrastructure.
In a typical workflow, a team can use AWS for cloud resources, Terraform to define infrastructure, and Kubernetes to run containerized workloads. These tools can work together, but they are not interchangeable, and plenty of roles focus on only one or two layers.

How much evidence is there that employers want all three?
Cloudpath’s April 2026 report counted 2,611 distinct cloud and DevOps postings, counting a role listed on two sites once. In that sample, 29.1% of postings mentioned Kubernetes plus a named cloud, 24.2% mentioned Terraform plus Kubernetes, and 15.6% mentioned Terraform, Kubernetes, and AWS. These are sample-specific rates, not global hiring figures. The report’s postings were concentrated in Brazil and Mexico, so they should be read as a directional snapshot rather than a worldwide census. Cloudpath’s April 2026 report

AWS was prominent in the same dataset: it appeared in 68.3% of the 1,620 postings that named at least one cloud. Azure appeared in 55.7% and Google Cloud Platform in 37.4%. The percentages total more than 100% because a posting could name multiple providers. They describe this sample only, not the share of all employers using each cloud. Cloudpath’s provider breakdown

The adoption case for Kubernetes is broader than one hiring sample, but it is not itself proof of a job requirement. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation reported in 2026 that 82% of surveyed container users were running Kubernetes in production. That figure applies to container users in the survey, not to all organizations or cloud job openings. CNCF’s 2026 cloud-native survey
What to prioritize if you are learning cloud skills
For a beginner, build from foundations toward operating a real workload. This sequence is a practical learning route, not a curriculum proven best for every learner or job.
Rank #2
- Learn cloud and systems fundamentals. Start with basic networking, Linux, identity and access management, and how applications communicate with infrastructure.
- Build a small workload on AWS. Use a modest project to learn how cloud resources fit together and how access is controlled. AWS offers self-paced training and role-based learning plans. AWS training
- Recreate its infrastructure with Terraform. Describe the resources in code, then practice changing and managing the environment consistently. HashiCorp’s certification catalog can provide milestones, but the practical goal is understanding how to author and operate configurations. HashiCorp certifications
- Containerize and deploy an application with Kubernetes. Learn how to deploy a workload and diagnose whether it is healthy. CNCF’s survey page links to Kubernetes and cloud-native learning resources. CNCF survey and training links
- Extend the project with operating practices. Add CI/CD, observability, security checks, access controls, and troubleshooting so the project demonstrates more than a successful first deployment.
As you practice, preserve the distinction between conceptual knowledge and hands-on ability. A useful portfolio project shows how you provision resources, deploy an application, monitor it, and respond to a change or failure—not just which course or exam you completed.

Should you get certifications?
Certifications can organize study and give employers a signal about what you have learned, but they do not establish that you can do a job or guarantee an employment outcome. Choose a credential to support a learning goal, then pair it with practical work.
The available paths test different things. AWS says its certifications validate broad knowledge, while its microcredentials assess practical implementation in AWS environments. HashiCorp lists Terraform Associate (Terraform 1.12), Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (Terraform 1.15), and Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced (Terraform 1.6); the catalog spans a multiple-choice Associate exam through a lab-based advanced credential. Exam names and tested versions can change, so check the current catalog before committing. AWS certification information · HashiCorp certification catalog
Cloudpath’s April 2026 sample recorded 73 postings mentioning Terraform Associate, 57 mentioning AWS Solutions Architect, 50 mentioning AWS Solutions Architect Associate, and 32 mentioning CKA. Those are counts of credential mentions in that dataset—not a ranking of certification value or a measure of total employer demand. Cloudpath’s April 2026 report

AWS reported more than 1.42 million active AWS Certifications and 1.05 million unique AWS Certified individuals as of January 2025. Those vendor-reported totals indicate credential volume, not hiring outcomes. AWS certification information

How to choose what comes next
Prioritize according to the work you want to do, rather than collecting all three credentials in parallel.
Best Value
- Choose AWS depth if your target roles center on designing or operating services in AWS. Cloud-provider knowledge is less portable than general concepts, but it can be important when employers use that provider.
- Choose Terraform depth if you want to focus on repeatable infrastructure, automation, and configuration management across environments.
- Choose Kubernetes depth if you want to deploy and operate containerized workloads or work on platform engineering. Production adoption makes it relevant, but not universal across cloud roles.
- Combine them when your target work spans cloud infrastructure, automated provisioning, and container operations. Build a project that connects the layers before assuming you need another exam.
Time and cost depend on the specific training and exam route; the cited sources do not establish a comparable total for these paths. Check current exam details and pricing directly with the provider before planning.
