KryonOS: A GUI JavaScript Operating System for ESP32

KryonOS is an embedded GUI and JavaScript app platform for ESP32. See its documented features, supported board statuses and hardware checks before flashing.

KryonOS is an embedded GUI operating system and JavaScript application platform for ESP32-family boards. It combines a graphical interface, system services and a Duktape JavaScript runtime so applications can use APIs for functions such as GPIO and I2C without each app recreating the entire firmware foundation. It is a project-specific platform for microcontrollers, not a desktop operating system.

What KryonOS is—and how its app model works

The project describes its architecture as hardware → KryonOS core → system APIs → JavaScript runtime → applications. In practice, the operating system provides shared services and hardware-facing APIs, while a JavaScript app supplies its own behavior. The project names Duktape as its JavaScript engine. That makes KryonOS an application platform layered on ESP32 hardware, rather than a general-purpose OS intended to replace a PC or phone operating system.

The intended benefit is reuse: developers can build applications against system APIs instead of assembling a separate firmware project for every feature. Whether that separation suits a particular project depends on its board, peripherals and requirements.

What the project documents as included

KryonOS’s repository describes the following capabilities. These are project-documented features, not independently benchmarked or verified performance claims.

  • A Kryon3D rasterizer and KryonBeam messaging.
  • Cloud and AI services.

The documentation’s feature list does not establish how quickly these components run, how much memory each consumes, or whether every feature is available on every listed board. Treat descriptions such as “high-performance,” “smooth” or “hardware accelerated” as project claims unless measurements for the relevant hardware and workload are available. KryonOS repository

Which ESP32 boards are listed, and how ready are they?

The repository’s current hardware table distinguishes stable targets from experimental ones. The configuration details below are specifications stated by the project, not independently measured values.

  • Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
  • Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
  • USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
  • Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Board Status Documented hardware
ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1 Default / Stable 16 MB flash, 8 MB octal PSRAM, ILI9341 240×320 SPI display, XPT2046 touch
ESP32 DevKit v1 / WROOM-32 Stable 4 MB flash, ILI9341 240×320 SPI display, XPT2046 touch
M5Stack Cardputer v1.1 Experimental ESP32-S3, ST7789V2 240×135 display, physical matrix keyboard
LilyGO T-HMI Experimental ESP32-S3, ST7789 240×320 parallel display, XPT2046 touch and SD_MMC
ESP32-CYD-28 (Cheap Yellow Display) Experimental ESP32, ILI9341 240×320, XPT2046 touch and RGB LED

For choosing hardware, the stable labels matter as much as the MCU name: display controller and interface, touch input, memory and storage support all affect whether a build matches a particular board. A third-party DEV article describes CYD support as stable in its narrative, but the repository marks ESP32-CYD-28 experimental. For a current compatibility decision, follow the repository’s status table rather than an older or conflicting description. DEV project article

Choosing a target and preparing the hardware

Default target: ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1 N16R8

The repository identifies the ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1 N16R8 as its default stable target. Its documented configuration is 16 MB flash and 8 MB octal PSRAM, paired with an ILI9341 240×320 SPI display and XPT2046 touch. If selecting a board, confirm that its exact memory variant matches the firmware target; ESP32-S3 by itself does not establish that it has the required memory configuration.

ESP32 DevKit v1 / WROOM-32 reference setup

The custom WROOM setup described by the repository uses a 2.8-inch ILI9341 touchscreen and an SD card module. Display/touch and SD storage are assigned separate SPI buses. This arrangement is specific to that reference setup: an SD card module is not listed as a universal requirement for every supported board.

Experimental boards

Cardputer, T-HMI and CYD appear in the repository as experimental targets. Their listed displays, inputs and storage differ, so do not assume that a build or wiring plan for the default DevKitC-1 transfers directly. Check the current repository instructions for the selected board and peripheral combination before wiring or flashing.

What to verify before relying on it

  • Board status: Confirm that the exact model is labeled stable or experimental in the live repository.
  • Memory variant: Match flash and PSRAM to the target configuration, especially for ESP32-S3 boards.
  • Display and input: Check the display controller, resolution, bus/interface and touch controller against the selected build.
  • Storage and wiring: Determine whether the specific setup uses SD storage and whether it assigns a separate bus.
  • Feature availability: Verify that the feature your application needs is supported on that target; a general project feature list does not prove universal board availability.
  • Performance: Look for measurements on the same board and workload before treating promotional performance language as a guarantee.

KryonOS is actively developing, and board support or feature details may change. The project overview and creator’s article explain the application-focused motivation, but neither substitutes for an independent compatibility test or benchmark. Hackster project overview
