Krita is a free, open-source painting program for Windows, macOS, Linux and (in a beta, tablet-focused form) Android. It is built primarily for digital illustration, concept art, comics, textures, pixel art and hand-drawn raster animation—not as a complete replacement for Photoshop’s photo-manipulation or publishing workflow.
This tutorial takes you from a blank document to a layered drawing you can save as an editable Krita file and export as PNG or JPG. It then covers tablets, brushes, masks, comics, animation and the most common problems beginners encounter.

What Krita is used for
Krita’s strongest use is creating raster artwork from scratch. You can sketch, ink, paint, texture and finish work in one document while keeping each stage on its own layer. Typical projects include:
- Digital sketches, character art and environment paintings
- Concept art and matte-painting elements
- Comics and manga pages
- Tileable textures and pixel art
- Basic raster graphic design
- Hand-drawn 2D raster animation
Krita’s own manual describes it as optimized for digital painting rather than as a general photo editor. It can overlap with Photoshop through brushes, layers, masks and filters, but photo stitching, catalog management, advanced retouching, desktop publishing, 3D and professional motion-graphics pipelines may be better handled by other applications. Is Krita free?
The official Krita download is free and open source, and the project says features are not locked behind a paywall. Paid copies may appear in app stores such as Steam, the Windows Store, Epic, Google Play or the macOS App Store. Those versions can be useful if you want store installation, automatic store updates or an easy way to support development; paying is not required to use the application. The project explains the distinction in its store update.
Optional official training, brush resources and merchandise are available through the Krita shop. Treat them as extras after you have learned the basic workflow.
Download the right version
Use the official download page or the official store for your platform. Avoid third-party “Krita download” sites, which can bundle unwanted software or provide outdated builds. Check the published hashes if you want to verify a downloaded installer.
As of the project announcement dated July 29, 2026, two release lines are listed:

Android support remains beta and is intended for tablets rather than a phone-first interface. Select the release that the download page identifies as appropriate for your operating system instead of assuming that the newest number works on every platform. Read the release announcement for platform-specific details.
Understand the workspace without learning everything at once
On first launch, concentrate on the areas you will use in every drawing:
- Canvas: the document where you draw and paint.
- Toolbar: common tools and controls such as brush size and opacity.
- Brush Presets docker: saved brushes you can select, search and tag.
- Layers docker: the stack where you add, rename, reorder and group artwork.
- Advanced Color Selector or other color controls: choose foreground and background colors.
- Tool Options docker: settings that change with the selected tool.
- Status bar: document dimensions, zoom and related information.
- Workspace selector: saved arrangements of dockers, including an animation workspace.
Right-clicking the canvas opens Krita’s Popup Palette, a quick way to reach frequently used tools and presets. If a tutorial’s layout does not match yours, the cause may be a different release, workspace or customized docker arrangement. Use the workspace switcher to choose another layout or reset it, and use the reference manual when labels differ.

Common default shortcuts include B for the freehand brush, E to toggle eraser mode, Ctrl+Z to undo on Windows/Linux, and F6 for the brush-preset editor. Shortcuts can be customized, and macOS uses platform-specific command-key equivalents, so verify them in Krita’s shortcut settings.
Your first Krita drawing: a layered fruit or icon
A small subject teaches the complete workflow without making the software the difficult part. The following uses a 2,000 × 2,000 pixel square as a practical example, not a requirement.
- Create a document. Open Krita and choose the New Document command, or press Ctrl+N on Windows/Linux. Set the example canvas to 2,000 × 2,000 pixels and create it.
- Choose one dependable brush. In Brush Presets, select a basic opaque or pencil-like preset. Do not download a large brush collection yet.
- Make a sketch layer. Add a paint layer in the Layers docker, rename it “Sketch,” and draw the main shape. Use the toolbar to adjust brush size and opacity.
- Create clean line art. Add another paint layer above the sketch and name it “Line art.” Lower the sketch layer’s opacity if the lines are hard to see, then redraw the contours on the new layer.
- Add flat color. Create a paint layer below “Line art,” rename it “Flats,” and place the base colors there. Reordering the layer below the ink keeps the outlines visible.
- Add shadows. Create a layer above the flats and name it “Shadows.” Paint darker shapes on that layer, reduce its opacity when needed, or try a suitable blending mode. A separate layer keeps the flats intact.
- Add highlights. Use another layer for small light areas. Keeping highlights separate makes them easy to revise or remove.
- Save the source. Use Save and keep the document in Krita’s native format so its layers remain editable. Save incremental versions for important work.
- Export a copy. Use the export command and choose PNG for lossless artwork or transparency, or JPG when a smaller file is more useful and compression is acceptable.
The exercise is complete when you can hide the sketch, change a flat color without repainting the lines, and export a copy while retaining the layered source.
Brushes, pressure and erasing
A brush preset is a saved combination of a brush engine, tip, texture and behavior. Brush size and opacity are separate controls, while flow and pressure response determine how a stroke builds up. Start with one opaque brush and one sketching brush; a large preset library is less useful than understanding two reliable tools.

Adjust the active brush
- Change size for line weight or coverage.
- Change opacity for lighter marks and glazing.
- Test whether pen pressure changes size or opacity before painting a finished piece.
- Press E to toggle eraser mode on a brush when that is faster than changing presets.
- Open brush settings (the default F6 workflow) only when the preset’s behavior needs adjustment.
The user manual covers loading, creating, tagging and sharing presets. Imported bundles can be organized with tags and filters; use reputable sources and restart Krita if a newly imported resource does not appear.
Layers: the structure behind editable paintings
Most new paintings use raster paint layers. Put stages that need independent editing—sketch, inks, flats, shadows and highlights—on separate layers. The top of the layer stack appears above lower layers, so order matters. Rename layers as you work and use groups when a document becomes crowded.
- Opacity: controls how strongly a layer is displayed.
- Blending modes: change how a layer combines with the layers beneath it; use them deliberately and check the result at normal zoom.
- Groups: keep related line, color or page elements together.
- Raster and vector layers: serve different kinds of content; raster layers are the normal starting point for painting.
- Masks: hide or modify content without permanently deleting the original pixels.
- Transform masks: apply non-destructive scaling, rotation or deformation as part of the layer stack.
Alpha inheritance and clipping-style workflows are powerful but add complexity. Learn ordinary layer order and opacity first. The basic concepts guide explains layer types, transparency and masks.

Set up a drawing tablet and pressure sensitivity
A mouse can operate every Krita tool, but a pressure-sensitive tablet usually gives better control over line width and paint buildup.

- Open Krita and select a brush that is known to respond to pressure for size or opacity.
- Draw test strokes from light to heavy pressure.
- If you use Windows and pressure fails, test the WinTab and Windows Pointer Input choices in Krita’s tablet settings.
- Restart Krita after changing the input mode, then test again.
- On Linux or Android, check device- and version-specific compatibility if the operating system sees the tablet but Krita does not.
If pressure still fails, verify the driver first, then the input mode, then the brush preset. The Krita FAQ documents common tablet-driver and pointer-input problems.
Selections, masks, transforms and stabilizers
Add these tools after the basic drawing workflow is comfortable:
- Selections isolate an area so color or effects stay inside it.
- Transform tools resize, rotate or deform selected content.
- Masks let you hide or reveal content reversibly instead of erasing the only copy.
- Transform masks preserve the original layer while applying a non-destructive transformation.
- Stabilizers smooth hand-drawn strokes when you need cleaner inking; stronger stabilization can add visible lag.
Whenever an edit may need revision, prefer a new layer, selection or mask over permanently painting over the only version.
Color cleanly with a simple layer plan
For an illustration, keep line art above flats, shadows above flats, and highlights on their own layer. You can use selections to constrain a fill, or an alpha-based workflow to paint only where existing pixels are present. The exact method depends on the shape and brush, but the principle is constant: preserve the ability to recolor and correct without redrawing the entire image.
Keep the sketch hidden or at low opacity once the final lines are complete. If the file becomes confusing, group layers by stage and use descriptive names rather than duplicating large layers repeatedly.
Save editable files and export delivery copies
Your native Krita document is the working master: it preserves layers, masks and other editable structure. Exported files are copies for a particular destination.

Krita includes comic templates and workflows. Set the page dimensions and resolution before drawing, then keep a repeatable structure for every page:
- Create the page with the intended print or screen dimensions.
- Use guides or a panel layout to establish borders.
- Keep rough sketches, inks and flats on separate layers or groups.
- Use the text tools for lettering and check readability at the final viewing size.
- Save each page as an editable source and export the delivery format separately.
For a multi-page project, consistent layer names and page settings matter more than an elaborate brush collection. The user manual and official shop list comic-focused guidance and optional training.
Animate raster drawings in Krita
Krita supports hand-drawn raster animation through a timeline, animation and onion-skin dockers, and rendering workflows. It is a good fit for exercises such as a bouncing ball, a short walk-cycle fragment or frame-by-frame effects.
- Open the workspace controls and choose the Animation workspace, or enable the Animation Timeline docker manually.
- Create a raster paint layer for the animated drawings.
- Use the timeline to create and edit frames.
- Enable onion skinning to compare neighboring frames.
- Draw a short exercise and preview it in the timeline.
- Render or export through Krita’s animation workflow, following the documentation for your installed version.
Krita is not automatically the best choice for projects requiring sophisticated tweening, character rigging, audio editing, compositing or studio asset management. Export behavior can depend on codecs and FFmpeg; the July 2026 release notes mention fixes involving FFmpeg 7.0+ HDR rendering and playback-engine behavior. Consult the animation manual and the version-specific release notes instead of assuming every system renders identically.
Fix common beginner problems
Pressure does not work
Confirm the tablet driver, test WinTab versus Windows Pointer Input on Windows, restart Krita after changes, and use a pressure-sensitive preset. A brush that ignores pressure can make a working tablet appear broken.

Check the Krita release and operating system used by the tutorial. Switch or reset the workspace, re-enable closed dockers through the relevant menu, and consult the FAQ or reference manual. Android and customized workspaces can look substantially different from desktop screenshots.

An imported brush pack is missing
Verify that the resource bundle was imported through Krita’s resource-management workflow, clear brush tags or search filters, check compatibility, and restart the application. Avoid untrusted bundles.
The file is slow or enormous
Reduce canvas dimensions when the intended output allows it, avoid oversized duplicate layers, organize content into groups, close unused documents and use simpler presets when the system is constrained. There is no universal ideal canvas size or hardware specification; performance depends on the document and platform.
Who should choose Krita—and who should not?
Krita is a strong fit if you want free, open-source painting software with layers, masks, customizable brushes, stabilizers, comics support and hand-drawn raster animation on a desktop platform.

A practical learning path after your first drawing
- Repeat the sketch, line, flats, shadows and highlights workflow with a different subject.
- Learn selections, masks, transforms and stabilizers.
- Study color and lighting while keeping edits on separate layers.
- Practice importing and tagging one useful brush resource.
- Choose a focused branch: comics, pixel art, textures or animation.
- Use the official post-download learning hub, tutorials, basic concepts and reference manual as your next resources.
Optional ways to support Krita
You can use the free official download and support the project only if you want to. Store versions are useful for store convenience. The project’s June 22, 2026 USB-card announcement lists a 32 GB A+C keycard with Krita and training packs at €34.95 for the manually updated version and €19.95 for an empty card; those are the announcement’s prices and may change. The shop also lists optional Digital Atelier brush and training bundles and other courses, with displayed prices and regional VAT subject to change. None is required for the beginner workflow above.
The Bottom Line
Krita is an excellent starting point for drawing and painting: download it from an official source, learn the canvas and layers first, keep an editable native file, and export separate copies. Add tablet troubleshooting, masks, comics or animation only when your project needs them.
