On a current iPhone, “camera roll” means the Photos app. To send an existing picture, open WhatsApp, choose a chat, tap + beside the message field, select Photos or Photo Library, choose the image, add a caption if needed, and tap Send. Button names such as Add, Done, or an arrow can vary by WhatsApp and iOS version.
Send one photo from WhatsApp
- Open WhatsApp and open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the + button beside the message field.
- Choose Photos or Photo Library.
- Tap the picture you want to send.
- Add a caption if useful.
- Tap Send (or the arrow button).
iPhone photos are stored in Photos, usually under Library, Recents, or an album such as Favorites or Screenshots—not in a separate Camera Roll app. Apple’s current sharing guidance is available at Apple’s iPhone Photos guide.

Share several photos at once
Use WhatsApp’s picker
- Open the destination chat and tap + > Photos/Photo Library.
- Tap Select, if that control appears.
- Tap each image you want to include.
- Tap Add or the arrow, review the selection, then tap Send.
WhatsApp may display the selection as a group or as separate attachments. The available item count and layout can change with the app version and media type, so do not rely on a fixed maximum.

- Open Photos and open Library or the relevant album.
- Tap Select, then tap each photo.
- Tap Share.
- Swipe across the app row and tap WhatsApp. If it is hidden, tap More.
- Choose the contact or group, tap Next if shown, review the recipients, and send.
Apple documents selecting and sharing multiple items from Photos at its iPhone sharing guide. This route is especially useful when you are already browsing an album or WhatsApp’s picker is not showing the expected image.

Send a photo in HD quality
- In a WhatsApp chat, tap + > Photos/Photo Library and select the image.
- On the preview screen, tap the HD icon.
- Choose HD quality, then tap Done or confirm.
- Tap Send.
HD normally gives visibly better detail than WhatsApp’s standard photo mode, but it is not a promise that the untouched camera file will be delivered. WhatsApp can still resize or process the image. The HD control may be unavailable for some media, selection modes, or app releases. A comparison of standard and HD behavior is reported by TechRadar; exact dimensions vary by source image and version.
Send the original-quality file
When resolution, editability, printing, or archiving matters, use WhatsApp’s file route rather than ordinary photo mode:
- Open the chat and tap +.
- Tap Document.
- Choose Photo or Video, if offered.
- Select the item from Photos, tap Add or the arrow, and tap Send.
The recipient receives a file instead of the usual in-chat image preview and may need to tap it to download or save it. This iPhone workflow is documented by MacRumors, following WhatsApp’s original-quality file rollout described at MacRumors.

Which sending method should you choose?

Apple says iCloud photo links remain available for 30 days; availability of that option in a particular WhatsApp workflow can vary. See Apple’s sharing options.
If WhatsApp cannot see your photos
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > WhatsApp.
- Allow access to the required selected photos or to the full library.
- Return to WhatsApp and reopen the picker.
With limited or selected-photo access, an image that has not been approved will not appear. You can add more photos from the same settings page or when WhatsApp requests access. Apple explains third-party Photos permissions and sharing controls in its Photos privacy documentation.
If WhatsApp is missing from Photos’ share row, swipe left and tap More, confirm that WhatsApp is installed, update it in the App Store, restart Photos and WhatsApp, or use WhatsApp’s in-app picker instead.

If a photo is stuck on “Preparing” or will not send
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular service and retry.
- Open the picture in Photos and wait for its full-resolution version to download from iCloud.
- Try one photo instead of a large selection.
- Turn HD off and retry, or use Document for the file.
- Close and reopen WhatsApp, then restart the iPhone if necessary.
- Check available iPhone storage and update WhatsApp and iOS where appropriate.
- If only one image fails, duplicate or re-export it in Photos and send the new copy.
An iCloud-optimized thumbnail may be visible before the full file is local. Apple describes iCloud Photos availability and storage optimization at its iPhone guide. Large videos, unusual encodings, intermittent connections, low storage, and software bugs can also cause failures. Anecdotal recent reports describe preparation and HD problems, but they are not universal: Apple Help report and WhatsApp report.

Live Photos, metadata, and privacy
Live Photos
Send a Live Photo normally when a still image is acceptable. If the motion matters, export or convert it to video, or use a sharing method that supports Live Photos. Unsupported destinations may receive only a still image, and selecting HD does not guarantee that interactive Live Photo behavior survives. Apple notes this limitation in its sharing guidance.
Location and other metadata
A photo can contain date and time, location, device details, captions, and editing information. Before sharing from Photos, tap Share > Options and turn off Location when appropriate. Normal WhatsApp media and document delivery can handle files differently; if metadata preservation is important, send the original as a document and have the recipient inspect the downloaded file. Check the recipient
Verify the chat name and profile image before sending, especially in groups. Review the selected images when sharing from Photos. For particularly sensitive media, WhatsApp’s View Once option can remove the item from the chat after it is opened, but it is not protection against screenshots or other capture methods; see Meta’s explanation.

Practical edge cases
- The Camera app is mainly for taking a picture or opening the latest one; use Photos for the complete library and albums.
- Edited photos are generally shared as the rendered current image in ordinary media mode. Use Document when preserving the file itself matters.
- Screenshots and downloaded images can have different formats, dimensions, and metadata from camera originals.
- For many large photos, a cloud link is often more manageable than filling a chat with attachments.
