The studio said the project’s current direction would not let it deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term. The “less than a year” framing applies to the game’s public reveal under the PUBG name in late 2025—not to the project’s full history, which dates back to 2022.
Why did PUBG Studios cancel Black Budget?
In its official Steam development update, PUBG Studios said it had reviewed the project’s status and future direction and concluded that its current direction would not allow the studio to deliver a game players could enjoy over the long term. That is the studio’s stated rationale; the update does not identify a personal spokesperson or provide a more specific explanation.

The studio thanked people who took part in the closed-alpha tests and shared feedback. It also said it would carry lessons from development and testing into future projects, without naming a successor game or outlining a follow-up plan.

What was PUBG: Black Budget?
Black Budget was planned as a PvPvE extraction shooter set on Coli, an island trapped in a time loop. Aju Press reported that players would enter as contractors, collect loot, face rival teams, AI creatures and supernatural anomalies, then try to extract. The report described matches with up to 45 players in three-person squads; that figure refers to the planned match format, not a measured result or a released game feature. These are reported design details, not firsthand gameplay findings.
Was it really cancelled less than a year after its announcement?
Only if “announcement” means the late-2025 public reveal using the PUBG name. Aju Press reported that Krafton had disclosed the project as Project Black Budget in its third-quarter 2022 earnings materials, and that the PUBG name was attached in November 2025. PUBG Studios announced that development was ending on October 1, 2026. So the cancellation came less than a year after the PUBG-branded reveal, but nearly four years after the project’s earlier disclosure.
