Which reader should you choose?
Choose Kindle’s built-in reader for a straightforward Amazon workflow
The native reader is the more convenient fit if your books and personal documents live in Amazon’s ecosystem. Amazon describes account access across devices, adjustable reading presentation, in-book search, dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights. Send to Kindle offers several delivery routes, and documents can be added to the Kindle library for linked devices when that option is enabled.

Amazon’s UK support documentation says the service has no additional cost and allows web uploads up to 200 MB. That is a service specification in that support documentation, not a general limit for every delivery method or a guarantee of identical file behavior across devices.

KOReader is a document viewer for e-ink devices and also runs on Android and Linux computers. The project lists support for devices including Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, and reMarkable. Its format range includes both reflowable books and fixed-page documents, which can help if your library includes more than standard novels.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Its layout controls are aimed at readers who want to tune how text appears: margins, line spacing, fonts and styles, hyphenation, contrast, and zoom are configurable. The project also documents calibre-related metadata search and wireless delivery, plus OPDS library browsing and plugins.
How the two handle ebooks and file formats
KOReader’s broad format list includes EPUB, FB2, MOBI, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM, and TXT, alongside PDF, DjVu, CBT, and CBZ. But general format support should not be confused with Kindle Store compatibility. The KOReader project says EPUB is its best-supported format on Kindle; other formats such as MOBI may lack features, while KFX and DRM-protected books are unsupported. Its Kindle quick-start guide likewise warns that DRM-protected content is not supported.

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts PDF and EPUB as well as other supported file types. A supported extension alone does not prove that every feature will work the same way on each Kindle model or app, so check the specific document and device workflow you plan to use.
PDFs: zoom, reflow, and writing are different needs
When KOReader’s PDF tools may help
KOReader documents zoom-to-fit for paged media and a reflow path for scanned PDF and DjVu documents through its built-in K2pdfopt library. Reflow can make scanned pages easier to read on a small display, but the result is still dependent on the document; it is not the same as having a well-structured, reflowable ebook.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
When Amazon’s PDF workflow may be enough
Amazon supports sending PDFs to the Kindle library. If your priority is straightforward delivery and reading, the built-in option avoids installing another reader. For annotations, distinguish typed notes and highlights from handwriting directly on a page: Amazon documents page writing for Kindle Scribe in supported document workflows, while available personal-document functions vary across Scribe, other Kindle e-readers, and apps.
Neither option makes every fixed-layout PDF comfortable on every screen. Dense pages, charts, and small print may require zooming or frequent navigation; the choice is best judged against the actual files and device you use.

What installing KOReader on a Kindle involves
KOReader’s Kindle installation guide says installation is for jailbroken Kindle devices. Jailbreak availability depends on the model, model variant, and current firmware, and the guide provides different paths and firmware-specific instructions. Its revision dated August 28, 2026 describes one package-manager route as experimental.
- Identify the exact Kindle model and variant. Do not rely on the product family name alone.
- Check the current firmware and the project’s installation guide. Confirm that the documented jailbreak route applies to that precise combination before changing the device.
- Review the installation path and its status. The guide distinguishes among routes and notes when a route is experimental; follow the applicable instructions rather than assuming a single universal installer.
- Plan how you will transfer documents. KOReader documents USB transfer, cloud storage, SSH/SFTP, calibre transfer, and other options depending on the device. These are transfer methods, not substitutes for the jailbreak needed to install KOReader on Kindle.
If you do not want to jailbreak or your Kindle’s firmware is not eligible, the built-in reader is the practical choice on that device. KOReader may still be an option on another supported device, including Kobo, PocketBook, reMarkable, Android, or Linux, depending on the project’s current support.

- Pick the built-in reader if ease of setup, Amazon library integration, Send to Kindle, and familiar notes, highlights, search, and dictionary tools matter most.
- Pick KOReader on a compatible device if you need a wider range of document formats, extensive layout adjustments, calibre or OPDS integration, or PDF and DjVu zoom and reflow tools.
- Before choosing KOReader on Kindle, verify jailbreak compatibility for the exact model, variant, and firmware, and confirm that your books are not DRM-protected or KFX.
- For PDF-heavy reading, decide whether you need zooming, scanned-page reflow, or handwriting; these are distinct capabilities, and handwriting support is device-specific.
