1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGrok can give different answers because it generates responses from the conversation and may retrieve changing information from public X posts or the live web. It can also be wrong even when it sounds certain. To diagnose a difference, compare the exact prompt and conversation context, check what sources were used for current information, and verify important claims independently. If Grok will not load or you see connection errors, troubleshoot the network or browser separately.
Why can Grok give different answers to the same question?
X describes Grok as an AI assistant powered by a large language model that generates text through next-token prediction. That means its answer is generated, not simply looked up as a fixed entry. X also says Grok may decide whether to search public X posts and the live web, so information retrieved for a current-events question can affect the response. X does not publish a complete explanation of why consumer Grok varies between responses or a guarantee that repeating a prompt will produce identical output.

The prompt or conversation may not be identical
A small wording change, or an earlier message in the same conversation, can change how Grok interprets a question. When comparing two answers, note the exact prompt and whether each was asked in a new chat or after other messages. Using identical wording and context makes the comparison more useful, but it does not guarantee identical results.
Search results can change what Grok says
For questions about recent events, Grok may use public X posts or live-web material. Look for linked or cited sources when available and inspect them: different retrieved material can lead to a different response, and a response without visible sources is not proof that the information was independently verified. X describes this search behavior on its About Grok page.

Model changes matter in API workflows
xAI documents that API model aliases can follow the latest stable release, while date-specific model identifiers remain fixed. Its May 15, 2026 retirement notice also documents API model identifiers redirecting to newer models. If you use the API, check the model ID in your request and xAI’s migration notices. These API details do not establish which model served a particular answer in the consumer X experience.
A confident answer can still be wrong
X warns: “This is an early version of Grok. It may confidently provide factually incorrect information, missummarize, or miss some context.” Confidence, length, and detail are not evidence of accuracy. For consequential claims, check a reliable primary source rather than relying on Grok alone.
How to troubleshoot different answers
- Save the comparison. Keep both answers, the exact prompt, the preceding conversation, the time, and whether each attempt was in a new chat or an existing thread.
- Repeat with matching conditions. Use the same wording and conversation context. If the answers still differ, treat that as evidence of variation—not proof that Grok promises deterministic output.
- Check sources for current questions. Inspect any cited or linked material and compare it with authoritative sources. In an API workflow, xAI says real-time events require server-side Web Search or X Search tools; these are developer-side capabilities, not controls that should be assumed to exist in the consumer interface. See xAI’s model documentation.
- Verify the claim independently. Prioritize primary sources for facts that affect health, money, safety, legal decisions, or other important choices. X’s Grok guidance also advises users to verify information independently.
- If you use the API, inspect the model identifier. Determine whether your request uses a moving alias or a dated model ID, then check the relevant xAI migration information. Do not apply API model-version assumptions automatically to consumer X chats.
What if Grok will not load?
A page that fails to load or shows a connection-like error is an access problem, not evidence that Grok’s answer generation is inconsistent. X’s general web troubleshooting guidance recommends checking your network or VPN, trying a private browser window, updating the browser, and clearing cache and cookies. These steps address access issues; they do not make answers more accurate or consistent.

Do Grok privacy settings make answers consistent?
No such guarantee is documented. X lists controls for training-data sharing and personalization under Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators. Those settings concern data use and personalization; X does not say they make responses deterministic.
