Kola Superdeep Borehole vs. the Deepest Ocean Drilling Projects: What Each Reveals

Kola reached 12,261 m in continental crust, while ocean programs measure seafloor penetration and water depth separately. Here is what each record reveals.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole and the deepest ocean-drilling records measure different things. Kola reached 12,261 metres below the land surface in continental crust. Ocean programs drill from a ship, so their records must separate water depth from penetration below the seafloor: the International Ocean Discovery Program (2013–2024) lists 8,023 metres of water above its deepest site but 1,806 metres as its deepest hole penetration.

Kola is therefore the deeper single borehole, while ocean drilling has sampled a far larger geographic range. One follows a long vertical section of continental rocks at one location; the other gathers sediments and oceanic-crust cores from many sites, expeditions and platforms. Comparing what each reveals is more useful than treating the figures as one race.

Why “deepest” is easy to misunderstand

A borehole depth is normally the distance drilled downward from the ground surface. In marine science, a drilling site has at least two vertical measurements: the water column between the ship and the seabed, and the hole drilled into the seabed. They are not interchangeable.

  • Land borehole depth: vertical penetration below the ground surface.
  • Marine water depth: distance from the sea surface to the seafloor.
  • Marine hole penetration: distance drilled below the seafloor into sediment and, where reached, oceanic crust.

A ship can work in very deep water yet drill only a relatively short distance into the seabed. Conversely, a program record for the deepest hole may belong to a platform that is not the ship a reader has in mind. Every record below is labeled by its reference point, program period and scope.

When you encounter an ocean-drilling depth, ask three questions before comparing it with a land borehole: Is it water depth or penetration below the seafloor? Does it refer to one ship or an entire program? And which program period does it cover? Those labels are part of the measurement, not fine print. Without them, the 8,023-metre water-depth figure can be mistaken for a hole record, or a program-wide maximum can be attributed to the wrong vessel.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole: one long traverse through continental crust

The former Soviet Kola Superdeep project, listed by the DFG SPP ICDP as KSDB-3, was designed to investigate continental crust. Its final depth is reported as 12,261 metres in that project listing. The commonly repeated value of 12,262 metres differs by one metre; the figure here follows the ICDP listing rather than silently combining the two.

Kola did not simply produce a record number. The hole crossed a defined sequence of rocks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Depth interval below land surface Geological material described by the project listing What the interval represents
0–6,842 m Lower Proterozoic Pechenga sedimentary-volcanic formation The upper part of the continental-crust section encountered by the main borehole
6,842–12,261 m Archean granitic-metamorphic basement, including gneisses, amphibolites, migmatites and granitoids A substantial penetration into older crystalline continental basement

The official project description summarizes the result this way: “The main borehole (and several complementary ones) intersected the entire sedimentary-volcanic sequence of the Lower Proterozoic Pechenga Formation (0 – 6,842 m) and a considerable part (6,842 – 12,261 m) of the Archean granitic-metamorphic complex of the basement (gneisses, amphibolites, migmatites and granitoids).” That wording matters because it identifies the scientific object: a deep geological cross-section through continental formations, not merely a hole drilled farther than another project.

What Kola’s samples can tell scientists

Because the borehole remains in one continental setting, its observations can be placed in a continuous vertical context. Researchers can relate recovered rocks and downhole measurements to the transition from the Pechenga sequence into crystalline basement. The result is a detailed look at how different rock units are arranged with increasing depth in that part of the Baltic Shield.

Kola’s strength is vertical continuity. Its limitation is geographic representativeness: one exceptionally deep section cannot stand in for every continent, crustal province or tectonic environment. The project reveals a great deal about the rocks it intersected, but it is not a distributed survey of Earth’s crust.

The depth intervals also make the result more specific than the headline number alone. The ICDP listing places the boundary between the described Pechenga sequence and Archean basement at 6,842 metres. The remaining interval to 12,261 metres is described as a considerable part of the basement complex—not as the entirety of that complex. This distinction keeps the geological claim aligned with what the project description actually says.

Ocean-drilling records by program era

International ocean-drilling statistics divide their maximum penetrations by program period. The periods used in the statistics are not interchangeable, and the platforms operating in them changed. The table keeps the labels attached to each value.

Program period Deepest hole penetration Record identified in the statistics Important scope note
Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), 1985–2003 2,111 m Hole 504B A program-era maximum, not a JOIDES Resolution-only figure
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, 2003–2013 3,059 m Associated with the Chikyu platform in the operator statistics Includes platforms beyond the JOIDES Resolution
International Ocean Discovery Program, 2013–2024 1,806 m Deepest hole penetration in that period’s table Program total for its stated era and participating platforms

The 3,059-metre Integrated IODP figure is sometimes presented as though it were a JOIDES Resolution achievement. It is not: the program table includes Chikyu. Likewise, the 2,111-metre ODP value belongs to the ODP era and its platform mix. A record without its period and platform context can create a false comparison.

The sequence of these three figures is not a simple chart of ever-deeper drilling. The largest listed program-era penetration is 3,059 metres in 2003–2013, while the later 2013–2024 maximum is 1,806 metres. These are maxima for different program periods, not a controlled test of the same platform, site or scientific objective. A lower maximum in a later period does not by itself establish that the later program was less capable or scientifically less valuable.

Water depth is a separate ocean record

For the International Ocean Discovery Program period from 2013 through 2024, the statistics list a maximum water depth of 8,023 metres. That number describes the water column above the seafloor. It does not mean the drill penetrated 8,023 metres into the seabed, nor does it compete directly with Kola’s 12,261-metre land-based penetration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same program statistics report 748 holes drilled and 18,054 cores recovered across the period. Those totals describe the scale of a distributed scientific effort involving the JOIDES Resolution, Chikyu and mission-specific platforms. They are not the depth of one hole.

These totals answer a different question from a deepest-hole record. The maximum describes the furthest penetration at one site during a stated period; hole and core counts describe the breadth of work across multiple sites. A count of recovered cores is not a count of expeditions, and it should not be read as a measure of how much crust was drilled at the deepest location.

What the JOIDES Resolution records actually mean

The JOIDES Resolution FAQ reports two ship-specific figures that answer different questions:

Measurement Figure Expedition or context Correct interpretation
Deepest seafloor hole drilled by the ship 1,928 m Expedition 317 Penetration below the seafloor
Deepest water reached by the ship 5,707 m Expedition 329 Water depth above the seafloor, not drilling depth

These figures cannot be added together or substituted for each other. A site 5,707 metres underwater does not imply a 5,707-metre hole. Similarly, the ship’s 1,928-metre penetration is a vessel-level record and should not be used as the maximum for an entire IODP era.

This distinction also clarifies the question “What is the deepest hole the JOIDES Resolution has drilled?” The ship FAQ’s answer is 1,928 metres below the seafloor on Expedition 317. That answer is deliberately narrower than the 3,059-metre Integrated IODP program maximum, which is associated with Chikyu in the operator statistics. Both figures can be correct because they describe different scopes.

How drilling locations are chosen

The JOIDES Resolution FAQ’s question about site selection reflects the way ocean drilling is planned: locations are chosen to answer specific Earth-science questions, not simply to chase the greatest possible depth. A proposed site may be valuable because its sediments preserve a climate history, it sits over a boundary between geological units, or it can test a hypothesis about oceanic crust and subseafloor processes. Expeditions then assemble a sequence of sites that addresses the scientific objectives within the ship, equipment, safety and time available.

This approach explains why the program’s scientific reach cannot be represented by one maximum-penetration number. A shallower hole at a strategically selected location can supply evidence that a deeper hole elsewhere cannot.

What ocean drilling samples

Ship-based projects begin above the ocean floor, pass through seawater and then recover cores from marine sediments and, where drilling continues far enough, oceanic crust. Unlike Kola’s single continental traverse, ocean drilling is geographically distributed. Successive expeditions visit different basins, margins, ridges and sedimentary environments, building a collection of cores that can be compared across locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The program totals show this sampling pattern more clearly than the depth record: 748 holes and 18,054 cores over 2013–2024 represent many individual sites and geological settings. Each core preserves a local vertical sequence, while the expedition network allows scientists to examine how deposits and crust vary from one part of the ocean to another.

The evidence type is therefore different from Kola’s. Ocean projects combine core material with drilling records and expedition data. Their value comes from linking samples to geography, age, sedimentary environment and oceanic-crust setting across many locations. The cited statistics establish the scale of that distributed effort, but they do not provide a single numerical score saying that ocean drilling revealed more or less than Kola; the projects answer different questions.

Continental crust versus oceanic crust and sediment

Comparison axis Kola Superdeep Borehole Deep ocean-drilling programs
Setting Continental crust on land in the Kola region Marine environments reached from drilling ships and other platforms
Reference for depth Below the land surface Hole penetration below the seafloor; water depth reported separately
Sampling pattern One exceptionally deep borehole, with complementary holes Many holes and cores distributed among expeditions and sites
Principal materials in the cited records Lower Proterozoic sedimentary-volcanic rocks and Archean granitic-metamorphic basement Marine sediments and, at suitable sites, oceanic crust
Best suited to Tracing a long vertical section of continental geology Comparing geological, environmental and crustal records across ocean basins
Meaning of the headline record Maximum penetration of the cited land borehole Maximum for a named program period or ship, depending on the source

The contrast is not simply between “land” and “sea.” It is also a contrast in sampling design. The Kola record follows a long vertical path through the rock units listed for one continental project. Ocean drilling’s program-wide totals aggregate holes and cores collected across multiple platforms and sites. A single deepest hole and a broad network are different kinds of evidence, so neither metric can stand in for the other.

Why the deepest number is not the whole scientific story

Depth provides access, not automatic significance

Greater penetration can expose older or deeper material, but scientific importance depends on what was recovered, how it is dated and characterized, and whether it addresses a well-defined question. Kola’s 12,261 metres gave scientists access to a deep continental sequence. Ocean programs often trade a single extreme depth for broader spatial coverage, allowing comparisons among numerous environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A single section and a global network answer different questions

If the question is how rock units change downward through one continental province, Kola’s continuous section is the more direct evidence. If the question concerns how marine sediments vary among basins, how oceanic crust forms at different settings, or how environmental records correlate over distance, a network of ocean sites is more informative. Neither design can substitute completely for the other.

Program records must retain their administrative boundaries

ODP, Integrated IODP and International IODP are successive periods with different operating arrangements. A maximum from one era should not be presented as a current universal record without naming that era. IODP says its downloadable drilling-site maps were last updated with available data in September 2025; map products and statistics therefore have update dates, and readers should use the stated statistics period when quoting a number.

For the same reason, “deepest ocean drilling project” needs a scope attached to it. It might mean the greatest penetration in one historical program, the deepest hole drilled by a named ship, or the deepest water site reached by that ship. These are valid but separate ways to describe a record. Naming the program and measurement makes a comparison reproducible and prevents a ship-level result from being mistaken for a multi-platform total.

A dated Chikyu figure and how to use it

A December 2015 JOIDES Resolution explainer described a 3.06-kilometre scientific ocean hole drilled by Chikyu and distinguished drilling in hard oceanic crust from work in sediments. That explainer is useful historical context for the Integrated IODP record, but it is not a substitute for the program statistics or a current all-program maximum. The operator table’s 3,059-metre value should remain labeled as the 2003–2013 Integrated IODP-era figure.

Common comparison mistakes

  1. Adding water depth to hole depth. Water above the seafloor and penetration below it are separate measurements.
  2. Calling Kola an ocean-drilling project. Kola is a continental-crust borehole drilled on land.
  3. Using the JOIDES Resolution record as the IODP record. The ship’s 1,928-metre figure is not the same as the 3,059-metre Integrated IODP maximum that includes Chikyu.
  4. Dropping the program dates. The 2,111-metre, 3,059-metre and 1,806-metre values belong to different eras.
  5. Treating core totals as one hole. The 748-hole and 18,054-core figures summarize a distributed 2013–2024 program.
  6. Assuming the deepest project revealed the most. Scientific return depends on geological setting, sampling strategy and research question, not depth alone.
  7. Combining records with different reference points. The JOIDES Resolution’s 5,707-metre water-depth record is not a penetration figure, while its 1,928-metre record is.

The key figures at a glance

5,707 m Deepest water reached by the JOIDES Resolution Ship FAQ; Expedition 329
748 holes; 18,054 cores Program-wide drilling and recovery totals International Ocean Discovery Program, 2013–2024

Bottom line: complementary windows into Earth

Kola wins a comparison of single-borehole penetration: the ICDP listing gives KSDB-3 a final depth of 12,261 metres beneath land, through the Pechenga sequence and into Archean crystalline basement. Ocean drilling wins on distributed sampling. Its records span multiple program eras, ships and mission-specific platforms, with separate measurements for seafloor penetration and water depth and thousands of cores gathered from many sites.

The meaningful conclusion is not that one approach is universally deeper or more important. Kola provides a long, coherent look down into continental crust at one location. Ocean expeditions provide a geographically connected archive of marine sediments and oceanic-crust material. Together, they show why Earth science needs both deep vertical sections and broad sampling networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deepest hole the JOIDES Resolution has drilled?

The JOIDES Resolution FAQ reports a deepest seafloor hole penetration of 1,928 metres on Expedition 317. This is a ship-specific hole depth, not the 3,059-metre Integrated IODP program maximum associated with Chikyu.

How deep underwater has the JOIDES Resolution gone?

The ship FAQ gives 5,707 metres as its deepest water depth, on Expedition 329. That is the distance from the sea surface to the seafloor, not the distance drilled into the seabed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do they decide where the JOIDES Resolution will drill?

The JOIDES Resolution FAQ frames site selection around scientific objectives: drilling sites are chosen to address Earth-science questions, rather than simply to set a depth record. A site’s value depends on the evidence it can provide for an expedition’s objectives.

Is the 3,059-metre ocean-drilling record a JOIDES Resolution record?

No. The 3,059-metre figure is the Integrated IODP program-era maximum for 2003–2013, and the operator statistics associate it with Chikyu. The JOIDES Resolution FAQ gives that ship’s deepest seafloor hole as 1,928 metres.

Does the 8,023-metre IODP figure mean the drill went that deep into the seafloor?

No. It is the deepest water depth listed for the International Ocean Discovery Program period of 2013–2024. The program’s deepest hole penetration for that period is listed separately as 1,806 metres below the seafloor.

Why is Kola’s depth sometimes given as 12,262 metres instead of 12,261 metres?

The DFG SPP ICDP project listing gives KSDB-3’s final depth as 12,261 metres. Some accounts use 12,262 metres; the one-metre discrepancy should be acknowledged rather than blending the two figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Kola is the deeper single borehole in this comparison: the DFG SPP ICDP listing reports 12,261 metres through continental formations. Ocean-drilling records describe different measurements and scopes—hole penetration below the seafloor, water depth above it, ship records, and program-era totals. Kola offers a long vertical view of continental crust at one site; ocean programs provide distributed samples from marine sediments and oceanic crust. These are complementary records, not a single contest in which maximum depth settles scientific value.
