Start by installing Kodi from its official platform page, adding your local or network media, and choosing any add-ons carefully.
What Kodi does—and what it does not provide
Kodi brings media into a library and provides an interface for playing it across supported devices. You provide the media files or configure access to online services. The official Kodi download page states, “The official Kodi version does not contain any content whatsoever.” Kodi’s download page explains the distinction.

- Identify the device and operating system. Go to Kodi’s official downloads page and select the page for your platform. For example, see the official Windows, Linux, and Android download pages.
- Choose the stable release. Kodi recommends stable releases for ordinary use. Avoid development builds unless you specifically need to test unfinished software.
- Follow the installation route for that platform. Steps differ by operating system and distribution method, so use the current instructions on the relevant official page rather than assuming one installer works everywhere.
- Open Kodi and add your media. Use Kodi’s library interface to point it to folders on the device or to media available over your home network. Library matching and presentation depend on how your files and sources are organized.
- Choose a control method. Use a supported device or television remote, HDMI-CEC where available, or an official mobile remote app listed through Kodi’s download resources.

How do I add media to Kodi?
Kodi needs a source before it can build a library. Add a folder containing your own videos, music, or other supported media, either on the device or on a network location your device can access. Keep the source available: files on a disconnected drive or an unavailable network share cannot be played until the device can reach them again.
After adding a source, browse it in Kodi and use the library features to organize and present its contents. Kodi provides the player and interface; it does not supply the underlying files or grant access to services that require a separate account or subscription.

How do Kodi add-ons work?
Add-ons extend Kodi with features such as music and video services, skins that change the interface, program or service tools, and web interfaces. Browse Kodi’s official add-on catalogue and check that an add-on is available for the Kodi version installed on your device; availability varies by version.

Official catalogue entries are distinct from third-party repositories and preconfigured builds. Team Kodi says third-party sources are not produced, supported, or endorsed by it, and warns that unofficial builds can contain malware or break Kodi. Use sources you trust, review what an add-on actually provides, and confirm you are authorized to access the content it offers.

Are Kodi add-ons safe?
No add-on source can be treated as equally vetted. Kodi’s official catalogue is the appropriate starting point, while third-party repositories and builds do not receive the same status or assurance. An add-on’s presence or a seller’s promise is not proof that it is safe, compatible, or authorized to provide particular media.
- Prefer the official catalogue and verify version compatibility.
- Be cautious of builds or devices advertised as instant access to paid movies, channels, or live events.
- Avoid add-ons promising content that ordinarily requires payment unless you have confirmed the provider and your right to access it.
- If an unofficial build causes errors or suspicious behavior, remove it and reinstall Kodi from the official platform page.
Is Kodi legal?
Kodi’s official legal explainer says, “As we supply it, Kodi is totally legal,” and distinguishes the software from the content and add-ons users choose. The official application does not include content, and Team Kodi does not endorse consuming pirated content that would otherwise require payment. Kodi does not recommend one hardware option over another. Choose based on the platform’s official installation route, the device’s ability to play your media, how it can access your local or network files, and the control method that suits your setup. Kodi supports television-oriented remotes and lists official mobile remote apps; a particular hardware remote is not endorsed by the Kodi Foundation.
