Choose Plex if you want a server to organize a library centrally and make it available through client apps on several devices. For watching away from home, Plex has the more directly documented remote-access workflow—but setup, network conditions, and current plan rules matter.
How Kodi and Plex approach a home library
The central difference is where each system puts the focus. Kodi is a playback center: install it on the device you want to use, then point it to media stored there or on an accessible network share. Plex is organized around Plex Media Server: run the server where the library lives, add libraries, then access them through Plex client apps.

Kodi: playback centered on the device
Kodi can play and display video, music, podcasts, games, and other digital media from local and network storage, as well as internet sources. Its library can scan media and display artwork and information. Supported network-source methods documented by Kodi include SMB/CIFS, NFS, WebDAV, and UPnP. You supply your own content or configure access to third-party online services; see Kodi’s features and supported formats and its download page.

Plex: library centered on a server
Plex’s personal-media workflow starts with Plex Media Server on the computer or compatible NAS that holds the media. You add libraries to the server, which catalogs content and provides artwork and information, then use Plex apps to browse and play it on supported clients. The server-and-client model is described in Plex’s quick-start guides.

Which one fits your setup?
| Your priority | Better starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| One TV or computer, mostly local or home-network files | Kodi | Check the platform, remote-control experience, file formats, and whether you are comfortable adding sources and configuring add-ons. Kodi’s format and feature documentation |
| A centrally managed library used on several devices | Plex | You need a suitable server host, compatible clients, a reliable network, and clarity about which desired features require a paid plan. Plex setup guide; Plex free-versus-paid overview |
| Watching outside the home | Plex is the more directly documented option here | Remote access must be configured and working. Check current account and plan terms as well as your home network. Plex remote-access guide |
| Media stored on a NAS | Either may fit | Plex documents compatible NAS devices as server hosts; Kodi can play files from network shares. Verify the exact NAS and playback devices. Plex setup guide; Kodi features |
| More control over the playback interface | Kodi is a reasonable starting point | Kodi supports customization and add-ons. Third-party add-ons can have separate availability and terms. Kodi download page |
This is a difference in documented workflows, not proof that Kodi cannot access media remotely. Kodi can read network media, but the cited Kodi documentation does not describe a matching managed remote-sharing service like Plex’s documented remote-access setup.
Local-network playback, remote access, and transcoding
For a file already on the playback device or reachable over the home network, Kodi’s source-based approach can be direct. Plex can also play media on a local network, but it introduces a server library and client apps. The extra organization can be useful when devices need a shared catalog; it also means there is a server to maintain.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Plex distinguishes three playback paths. Direct play uses a compatible stream as-is. Direct stream can remux a compatible media stream into a different container without converting the underlying audio or video. Transcoding converts media to suit a client or connection. Whether conversion is needed—and how well it performs—depends on the source format, client support, server capability, and network conditions. Plex explains these modes in its direct play, direct stream, and transcoding documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume every Plex stream needs transcoding, or that a particular processor is sufficient based only on a general recommendation. Check what your playback devices support and test the formats and quality you actually intend to use. Kodi’s broad format and source documentation is a starting point, not a guarantee for every file and device.

Customization, maintenance, and cost
Kodi is a good fit if you want to shape the playback experience and are willing to configure media sources and, where useful, add-ons. Plex provides a more centrally administered catalog, but requires a server host and working client apps. Either approach can involve setup; the difference is whether you prefer configuring playback devices or maintaining one library server.
Kodi’s official download information describes installing the software and using content from local or remote storage, discs, or other media you own. Plex documents basic free functionality as well as premium features and subscription benefits. Because plan entitlements and prices can change, check Plex’s current free-versus-paid details and Plex Pass feature information before deciding whether a feature you want is included or requires payment. No fixed price or tier requirement should be assumed without checking those current terms.

Do you need a NAS?
No. A NAS is an optional way to store a central library or host Plex Media Server; an existing computer and storage may be enough. Kodi can read media from network shares, so it does not require a NAS either. Before buying a NAS, confirm that the exact model supports Plex Media Server if that is your plan, and consider storage capacity, client compatibility, and whether your use will require transcoding. The cited documentation establishes compatibility only for supported devices, not for every NAS model.

A practical decision checklist
- Count playback devices. If one device is the main destination, begin by evaluating Kodi. If multiple devices need a common catalog, evaluate Plex’s server-and-client setup.
- Map where you watch. For home-network playback, either can be relevant. For away-from-home access, review Plex’s remote-access setup and current plan rules.
- Check the actual media formats. Confirm that each client can play your video and audio formats directly, or determine whether Plex would need to transcode them.
- Use hardware you already have first. A computer can host Plex, and Kodi can read local or shared files; do not treat a NAS as a prerequisite.
- Compare the ongoing effort and cost. Factor in server upkeep and any current Plex plan entitlements against the configuration and add-on choices you want with Kodi.
