How Sea of Conquest Hero Roles and Synergies Work

Build a Sea of Conquest crew around a shared combat plan, not a row of individually rare heroes. Start with the encounter and ship, choose a damage approach, then fill the jobs that keep the crew dealing damage and surviving long enough to use it. The right combination changes with the target, fight length, hero stars and upgrades you can realistically reach.

What the hero roles do

Role labels are useful shorthand for a hero’s job, not a complete official taxonomy or a guarantee that a hero fits every ship. The independent Sea of Conquest Handbook’s hero guide, updated September 28, 2026 and checked against version 1.1.790, describes these practical jobs:

  • Captain: Helps define the ship’s core combat identity.
  • First mate: Often amplifies damage or applies debuffs that help the crew’s plan.
  • Gunner: Adds direct damage output.
  • Defense: Helps the ship endure through mitigation, shields, aggro management or durability.
  • Support: Can contribute healing, dispels, buffs or rage manipulation.
  • Flexible: Bridges a gap in the roster when a more specialized option is unavailable or does not fit.

These functions overlap in practice. Judge a hero by what their skills do for the ship and encounter, rather than assuming the label alone settles where they belong. Read the Handbook’s hero guide.

What synergy means in practice

Strategic synergy: one coherent plan

A crew has strategic synergy when its skills reinforce the same damage and survival plan. A high-rarity hero can still be a poor fit if their kit does not help the ship’s main damage approach, leaves a critical job uncovered, or is mismatched to the target. Consider how quickly the encounter needs to end: a short fight and a prolonged one may reward different balances of damage, durability and control.

  • Special Miniature: The Alchemist (Biomancer)

  • Executor: Spires Hight Clone

At fleet level, check that you have enough damage to make progress, a front-line or survivability option to keep the fleet operating, and support where it improves the plan. Control and debuffs can gain value when an encounter lasts long enough for their effects to matter. There is no single balance that suits every campaign stage, sea monster, rally or PvP battle. The Handbook’s crew composition guide treats fleet purpose as a factor in composition.

Game-defined synergy: verify the exact mechanic

A community wiki describes numeric interactions involving matching damage types, skill triggers and preferred hero positions. Those claims come from a third-party page last modified March 15, 2026, rather than official developer documentation. Do not assume a universal matching-type rule or rely on an exact preferred-position bonus without checking the current in-game skill and position descriptions.

The distinction matters: a crew can have a coherent strategic plan without relying on an unverified percentage, while a displayed game bonus is useful only if it applies to the heroes and positions you are actually using. How to build and compare a crew

  1. Name the content. Decide whether the ship is for campaign or other PvE, a sea monster, a rally or PvP. Different targets and fight lengths can change the value of damage, defense, support and control.
  2. Pick the ship’s main damage plan. Identify which heroes and skills reinforce it. Do not use rarity or a tier letter as a substitute for checking how the kit works together.
  3. Cover the jobs the encounter needs. Check for primary damage, a front-line or survivability option and useful support. Add control or debuffs when the expected length of the fight gives them room to matter.
  4. Check the account, not just the roster on paper. Compare star level and realistic access to upgrades. A hero with an impressive theoretical tier may contribute less to your account than a hero you can develop into a useful core.
  5. Check ship and position fit. Make sure the skills suit the ship’s plan and the positions you can field. Confirm any claimed position bonus in the live game rather than importing an unverified figure.
  6. Invest toward a complete core. The Handbook advises against spreading scarce upgrades across many unfinished ships. Prioritize a useful, developable composition for your goals; this is strategic advice, not a guaranteed result.

When two lineups are both viable, compare job coverage, kit and damage coherence, the encounter and likely fight length, star and upgrade access, and ship and position fit. This produces a more useful decision than asking which crew is universally best.

How current are hero recommendations?

Sea of Conquest changes over time, so named builds and rankings can become stale. The Handbook’s hero and crew guides were updated September 28, 2026; its hero guide says it was checked against version 1.1.790. Apple’s US App Store listing displayed version 1.1.800, dated September 24, 2026, when accessed October 4, 2026. Recent store notes include crossover heroes and a change involving additional heroes on a flagship. Treat specific lineups as version-sensitive and check the current roster, skills and deployment rules in your game. Check the US App Store listing and version history.
