Kodi is a free, open-source media center that can organize and play your own video and music files on the device connected to your TV. For a one-screen setup, it can remove the need to run a separate media server—and Kodi itself has no software subscription fee.
That is a different arrangement from using one central library across phones and TVs: in a basic Kodi setup, playback happens on the device running Kodi. You supply the media; Kodi does not include a movie or TV catalog.

How Kodi works without a server
Install Kodi on a compatible device connected to your television or receiver, add the location of your media, then browse and play it using Kodi’s TV-oriented interface. The files can be on that device or on network storage. The key distinction is that Kodi can play them directly; a separate Plex-style server is not required in this setup.
Kodi’s official About page describes it as a free and open-source (GPL) media player and entertainment hub for Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS, tvOS, and Android. It supports remote controls and can access local and network storage. Kodi: About

What “without a server” does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: one Kodi device can read media and play it on the screen it is connected to without a separate media-server service in the middle.
- It does not mean: Kodi automatically turns that device into a centrally managed library streamed to every other screen in your home.
- It does not require files to live inside the player: Kodi can read media from network storage, even though this direct-play setup has no dedicated media server.
Who should choose Kodi over Plex?
Kodi is a good fit if you mainly watch in one room, already have a device that runs it, and want a browsable living-room interface for media you own. It avoids maintaining a separate server for that use case, and Kodi itself is free software.
Plex or another server-based system makes more sense if your priority is one managed library available from multiple separate devices, remote access, or server-side media processing such as transcoding. Kodi can be part of more advanced sharing arrangements, but synchronization and shared backends add configuration beyond the simple server-free setup. The Kodi Wiki documents those options in its syncing and sharing guide.

Kodi and server-based media systems compared
| Question | Kodi direct playback | Server-based setup |
|---|---|---|
| Where does playback happen? | On the Kodi device connected to the display. | A server supplies media to separate client devices. |
| Is a separate media server needed? | No, for direct playback from local or network storage. | Yes; the server hosts or serves the central library. |
| Best suited to | Primarily watching on one screen with a compatible player. | Serving one managed library to multiple clients. |
| Setup complexity | Lower when used on one device; shared databases or synchronization add setup. | Requires server setup and client configuration. |
| Cost of the software | Kodi is free and open source. | Jellyfin is a free, server-based alternative; see its official documentation. |
This is an architectural comparison, not a claim that Kodi cannot be configured for multiple devices. Plex and Jellyfin center on serving a library to clients; Kodi’s simplest mode centers on playback at the device running Kodi.

- A compatible playback device. This might be a computer or another device that supports Kodi and can be connected to the TV. Kodi’s official platform list is on its About page.
- Your own media files. Add a folder on the player or a network storage location to Kodi’s library. Kodi states that it does not provide media content or sources. Kodi: About
- A connection to the display. An HDMI cable is one common way to connect a playback device to a TV; it is optional if your device and setup use another suitable connection.
- Optional control hardware. Kodi supports remote controls, but a separate remote is not required if you can control it another way.
Check device compatibility before relying on 4K playback
Kodi’s availability on an operating system does not guarantee that every device running it can decode every file smoothly. Playback depends on the hardware and the particular file’s format, bitrate, and resolution. Lower-powered devices may struggle with high-bitrate 4K video or newer codecs, so check your playback device’s decoding capabilities against the media you plan to watch rather than treating “Kodi supports 4K” as a universal promise.

No. Kodi is a media player and library interface, not a bundled streaming catalog. You provide your own files or configure third-party services yourself. The Kodi project explicitly states, “Kodi does not provide any media content or sources.” Kodi: About
When Kodi stops being the simple server-free option
If you want to watch the same centrally managed collection on several TVs, tablets, or phones, direct playback on one Kodi device will not meet that goal by itself. You can explore Kodi’s documented synchronization and sharing options, but doing so adds configuration and may involve a shared database or another backend. If you want a dedicated system built around serving a library to multiple clients, Jellyfin is a free server-based alternative; Plex is another familiar server-oriented option. Jellyfin’s documentation describes its server-and-client model: Jellyfin documentation.
