KNX Thermostat Preset Modes in Home Assistant: Setup and Troubleshooting

Learn how KNX thermostat operation modes map to Home Assistant presets, which group addresses to configure, and how to fix missing modes.

To set a KNX thermostat preset in Home Assistant, configure the thermostat’s KNX operation-mode group object, then select a preset that the climate entity supports. Presets such as comfort, economy, and building_protection are separate from HVAC modes such as heat, cool, and off. The available presets depend on the thermostat and its KNX configuration.

What KNX presets mean in Home Assistant

A KNX climate entity can represent a thermostat or room controller. Its preset modes correspond to the KNX operation modes exposed by that device. The integration documents auto, comfort, standby, economy, and building_protection, but a particular thermostat may support only some of them. Home Assistant can detect supported modes from the thermostat setup; the operation_modes option can override the list to match the device. See the KNX integration documentation and Home Assistant’s climate entity documentation.

Preset mode versus HVAC mode

A preset describes the thermostat’s operation mode, for example comfort or economy. An HVAC mode describes the controller state, such as heating, cooling, or off. KNX climate configuration keeps these separate: use operation_modes for presets and controller_modes for HVAC modes. The integration lists off, auto, heat, cool, fan_only, and dehumidification as controller-mode strings. Adding a controller mode will not add a comfort or economy preset.

Configure the KNX operation mode

Home Assistant needs a KNX/IP interface or router to communicate with the KNX bus. A climate entity can be configured from the KNX integration panel or through YAML. Before entering addresses, check the thermostat documentation or ETS project: group addresses and datapoint behavior are specific to the installation.

  • Serves as a targeted replacement or upgrade part for indoor climate control systems, integrating temperature regulation and humidity management in one device.
  • Comes with built-in KNX communication capability, enabling seamless connection with compatible smart home or building control systems.
  • Features an integrated humidity sensor that monitors indoor moisture levels, supporting coordinated adjustment of temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Equipped with a convenient control switch for straightforward operation, allowing users to adjust settings without complex programming steps.
  • Adopts a compact and wall-mounted design that fits well with various indoor decor styles, requiring simple installation without specialized tools for basic setup.

Combined operation-mode datapoint

If the thermostat exposes a combined operation-mode datapoint, configure its write address and, if available, its state address. The integration documents this operation-mode datapoint as DPT 20.102. The addresses below illustrate the configuration fields; they are not universal KNX addresses.

knx:
  climate:
    - name: "Kitchen"
      temperature_address: "5/1/1"
      setpoint_shift_address: "5/1/2"
      setpoint_shift_state_address: "5/1/3"
      target_temperature_state_address: "5/1/4"
      operation_mode_address: "5/1/5"
      operation_mode_state_address: "5/1/6"

The write address sends a selected operation mode to the bus. The state address, when the device provides one, lets Home Assistant receive the reported mode. If the displayed preset does not track the thermostat, check that both addresses refer to the intended group objects.

Compatible with Siemens RDG100KN Thermostat
  • As a compatible replacement for the Siemens RDG100KN room thermostat, this device provides stable KNX bus communication for your building’s HVAC automation system.
  • Equipped with a built-in humidity sensor and physical control switches, you can directly monitor indoor humidity and adjust heating and cooling settings.
  • This wall-mounted thermostat is compatible with heating and cooling units. Replace faulty or outdated thermostats to restore normal control of your indoor climate.
  • Ideal for HVAC technicians, property maintenance teams, and smart home retrofits; verify your KNX system parameters before installation to ensure optimal performance.
  • This thermostat controls room temperature and humidity; it is recommended that wiring and parameter configuration be performed by a professional technician familiar with KNX.

Separate binary mode addresses

Some devices expose individual binary group addresses rather than one combined operation-mode datapoint. The KNX integration documents separate address fields for frost protection, night/economy, comfort, and standby, along with an optional operation-mode state address. These binary mode addresses use DPT 1. Match the fields to the group objects the thermostat actually exposes; do not assume every device has all four.

Match the preset list to the device

If Home Assistant exposes modes the thermostat does not support, or omits modes that it does support, set operation_modes to the thermostat’s actual supported preset values. This option controls the preset list; it does not change the underlying capabilities of the KNX device. Do not assume every KNX installation implements every documented mode.

Select a preset in an automation

Use the climate.set_preset_mode action and provide a preset supported by the target climate entity. For example:

action: climate.set_preset_mode
target:
  entity_id: climate.living_room
data:
  preset_mode: comfort

Home Assistant’s set thermostat preset mode action documents this action. The value must be one the target entity exposes; an action cannot make an unsupported thermostat mode available.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect preset

  1. Check the thermostat first. Confirm that the device supports the desired operation mode in its application documentation or ETS group-object configuration.
  2. Check the KNX group objects and datapoint. Confirm that the configured write and state addresses match the thermostat’s operation-mode object. Use the combined DPT 20.102 datapoint or separate DPT 1 addresses as appropriate for the device.
  3. Compare the exposed list with actual support. If the entity’s preset list does not match the device, configure operation_modes with the real supported values.
  4. Verify the automation action and value. Use climate.set_preset_mode and a preset shown as supported by that climate entity.
  5. Keep the two mode types separate. Diagnose a missing comfort or economy option through operation-mode configuration, not controller_modes.

Choose the address pattern that matches the thermostat

The combined datapoint and separate binary-address patterns are alternatives dictated by the thermostat’s KNX implementation, not competing universal recommendations. Use the pattern that matches the group objects in ETS and whether the device reports a state address. The KNX protocol also defines HVAC controller modes, but that protocol enumeration should not be treated as the list of presets available on a Home Assistant climate entity; the integration’s controller-mode settings and operation-mode presets serve different purposes. Protocol context is available in the KNX System Specifications.
