You can use Dropbox to upload copies of iPhone photos and videos, but Dropbox Camera Uploads is not a whole-iPhone backup that restores your apps, settings, and other device data. For a restorable iPhone backup, Apple documents iCloud or a Mac or Windows computer. Choose the method that matches what you need to protect.
What Dropbox backs up from an iPhone
Dropbox Camera Uploads copies selected photos and videos from your iPhone into your Dropbox account. It does not provide the whole-device restore backup described in Apple’s instructions for backing up an iPhone. Treat these as different jobs: Dropbox for a separate copy of camera media; iCloud or a computer for a device backup.

Dropbox’s documentation describes uploading photos and videos, not restoring a complete iPhone from those uploads. Your Dropbox copy is useful if you want to access camera media through your Dropbox account, but it is not a substitute for a device backup.

Dropbox says Camera Uploads is available to Dropbox users, though some team-admin restrictions may apply. Check your account’s available storage: insufficient Dropbox storage can stop uploads.
Uploading a large existing photo library
For a large upload, Dropbox offers overnight uploads on iOS. Keep the Dropbox app open, connect to Wi-Fi, and plug the iPhone into a charger while the upload runs. iOS may limit background activity, so an overnight upload is not a guarantee that every file will transfer without interruption.

Choosing photo and video formats
Dropbox supports HEIF/HEIC photos and HEVC-encoded MOV videos. Its Camera Uploads settings can convert HEIF files to JPG and non-HEVC MOV files for compatibility with non-Apple devices. Converting HEIF to JPG removes some HEIF features, so leave conversion off if preserving those features matters more than compatibility.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy iPhone photos may not upload to Dropbox
iOS limits background apps to conserve battery, which can delay or interrupt Camera Uploads. If uploads stall, check these settings and conditions:
- Background App Refresh: Make sure it is enabled for Dropbox.
- Photo access: Confirm Dropbox has permission to access the photos and videos you want to upload.
- Network settings: Check Dropbox’s cellular-data permission and whether Low Data Mode is limiting transfers. Wi-Fi can be preferable for a large library.
- Power: Keep the iPhone charged and avoid Low Power Mode while troubleshooting background transfers.
- App activity: Open Dropbox and allow it to remain active, particularly when trying an overnight upload.
- Dropbox storage: Check that the account has room for the files.
- Completion: Verify in Dropbox that the files are present and fully uploaded; do not assume a camera-roll item has a cloud copy just because Camera Uploads is enabled.
These checks address common causes, but background transfers can still be affected by device limits. If a file is important, verify its presence in Dropbox before deleting or changing the original.

How to back up the whole iPhone instead
Apple documents two ways to create a device backup: iCloud and a Mac or Windows computer. Both serve a different purpose from copying camera media to Dropbox.
Back up with iCloud
When iCloud Backup is enabled, Apple says automatic backups happen daily if the iPhone is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi. iCloud Backup covers device information and settings that are not already regularly synced to iCloud.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple’s 2026 documentation lists 5 GB of free iCloud storage, shared among iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other iCloud services. If iCloud storage is full, the iPhone will not back up to iCloud, and new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos.

When connected via USB-C, works with SANDISK Memory Zone app or Apple iOS Files app—automatic backup requires SANDISK app(3). Lightning connection requires the SANDISK app for copy and backup functions(3).
- SANDISK Memory Zone App Required. Download the app(3) from the App Store and update firmware if prompted to optimize your file management experience or jump to the iOS Files app from the home screen.
- Free Up Space. Seamlessly transfer files to your SanDisk Phone Drive, then easily delete them from your phone to reclaim valuable storage(3).
- Smarter Backups. Choose manual or automatic backup within the SANDISK Memory Zone app with real-time progress tracking, background multitasking, and partial backup support when storage is limited(3).
- Reliable Transfers. Move content between your USB-C or Lightning iPhone, iPad Pro, Mac, and other compatible devices(2).
Back up to a Mac or Windows computer
Connect the iPhone to the computer with a data cable that fits both devices, then follow Apple’s Finder instructions on a Mac or its Windows backup instructions on a Windows computer. The correct cable depends on the ports on your iPhone and computer; there is no one connector that applies to every setup.
Apple provides an option to encrypt a local computer backup. If you choose encryption, keep the password somewhere safe: you need it to use that encrypted backup.
Dropbox Camera Uploads, iCloud Photos, and device backups are different
| Option | What it does | Destination and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Dropbox Camera Uploads | Copies selected iPhone photos and videos; not a whole-device restore backup. | Dropbox account; uploads may depend on app activity, iOS background limits, network, power, and available Dropbox storage. |
| iCloud Photos | Syncs the photo library across devices; changes, including deletions, reflect across devices. | iCloud storage shared with other iCloud services. Photos and videos in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. |
| iCloud Backup | Backs up device information and settings that are not already regularly synced to iCloud. | iCloud; automatic daily backups require the enabled feature, power, a locked iPhone, and Wi-Fi. |
| Computer backup | Creates a local iPhone device backup; Apple offers an encryption option. | Mac or Windows computer connected by a suitable data cable; retain the encryption password if you set one. |
Because iCloud Photos is a sync service, it is not an independent archive: deleting a photo can sync that deletion across devices. Apple says photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises keeping backup copies of the library. If you want a separate media copy, verify that the Dropbox uploads completed or keep another copy outside the synced library.

Choose the right protection for what you might need to recover
- To access camera photos and videos in Dropbox: Enable Camera Uploads, select the media and data settings that suit you, and verify completed uploads in the Camera Uploads folder.
- To restore iPhone device data and settings: Use Apple’s iCloud or computer backup process.
- To protect the photo library from sync deletions: Keep a separate verified copy; iCloud Photos synchronization and iCloud device backup do not duplicate that library.
