Which host costs less over time?
DreamHost advertises the lower entry price for the first year, but that figure is not its ongoing rate. Launch is listed at $2.89 per month for the first year and $10.99 per month after renewal. KnownHost’s overview lists shared hosting from $3.47 per month when billed annually; its plan comparison labels tier prices “as low as,” so confirm the term and total at checkout before comparing.
DreamHost also lists Growth at $3.99 per month for the first year and $12.99 at renewal, and Scale at $9.99 for the first year and $25.99 at renewal. Those plans list 50 websites, 200,000 estimated monthly visits, and 50 GB storage for Growth; Scale lists 100 websites, 400,000 estimated monthly visits, and 100 GB storage. DreamHost says the full term plus taxes is charged at checkout. See its current plan and renewal prices.
#1 Best Overall
To make a fair cost comparison, use the same service type and billing period, and compare the amount due for the whole term as well as the renewal rate. A low monthly promotional figure can obscure the cost after the first term. DreamHost says promotional pricing applies to the first term and that its plan cards show renewal rates alongside promotional prices; verify the actual checkout total for the plan you select.
How do the shared hosting entry plans differ?
KnownHost Basic
KnownHost’s shared plan comparison lists Basic from $3.47 per month and includes one website, one CPU core, a 1 GB memory limit, 10 GB storage, five email accounts, two databases, cPanel, LiteSpeed, and free SSL. The same comparison lists unlimited premium bandwidth, an AMD EPYC CPU, and an NVMe backend across its four shared tiers. See KnownHost’s shared plan comparison for the published allocations.
DreamHost Launch
DreamHost’s Launch plan lists up to 25 websites, an estimated 40,000 monthly visits, 25 GB NVMe SSD storage, unmetered bandwidth, daily automated backups, unlimited free SSL certificates, a free one-year domain, and a three-month professional email trial with 20 mailboxes. DreamHost says the visit number is an estimate of traffic a tier can comfortably handle, not a hard limit. Check the DreamHost pricing page for current plan terms.

Do not treat the visit estimate as a guarantee of capacity or as directly equivalent to a CPU or memory allocation.

Which control panel is right for you?
Choose KnownHost shared hosting if you specifically want cPanel, which is listed with its shared plans. DreamHost uses its own control panel and says it does not offer cPanel or WHM. If you already use cPanel workflows or depend on them for site administration, that distinction may matter more than the introductory price.
KnownHost’s general hosting overview says control panels are not included by default and that panel licenses such as cPanel, Plesk, or DirectAdmin are billed separately for managed services. That general statement is separate from the shared-plan comparison, which explicitly lists cPanel on its shared tiers. Check the exact service and plan rather than assuming that the shared-plan inclusion applies to every KnownHost product. See KnownHost’s hosting overview and shared plan comparison.

For WordPress, compare managed plans with managed plans
A standard shared hosting plan and a managed WordPress plan do not provide the same service. If your priority is reduced hands-on maintenance or WordPress-specific tools, compare KnownHost’s managed WordPress service with DreamPress rather than comparing either only with a basic shared plan.

KnownHost managed WordPress
KnownHost lists Entry, Business, and Corporate managed WordPress options. Their published allocations are respectively 2, 4, and 6 CPU cores; 4, 4, and 6 GB memory; 50, 100, and 150 GB NVMe storage; and up to 100,000, 200,000, and 500,000 monthly visits. KnownHost’s WordPress information describes WP Toolkit features including one-click staging and cloning, and says 24/7 support is available. It lists a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients on WordPress packages. See KnownHost’s managed WordPress details.

DreamHost DreamPress
DreamHost positions DreamPress as managed WordPress hosting, with WordPress updates, on-demand backups, and staging listed as features. Its pricing page distinguishes this from WordPress hosting that the customer manages. Check DreamHost’s plan details for current pricing and terms.
DreamHost’s August 25, 2026 article reports that its own benchmark tests, conducted August 18–31, 2025, found DreamPress had “up to 6x faster site response times,” with pages fully loaded in under a second. DreamHost says results vary by region and site setup. This is DreamHost’s vendor-reported benchmark, not a matched test against KnownHost; it does not establish which host is faster for your site. The same article reports a 73% first-contact resolution rate for DreamPress support as of August 2026, also a DreamHost figure rather than an independent comparison. See DreamHost’s article and benchmark description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does either host have better uptime, speed, or support?
The available published material does not establish a performance or reliability winner between these providers. DreamHost advertises a 100% uptime guarantee, but a guarantee is a policy, not evidence that a site will experience zero downtime. Its hosting page describes infrastructure it says supports the guarantee; the full exclusions and credit process are not established here. KnownHost’s shared comparison also makes vendor claims about hardware and account isolation. Neither provider’s marketing language substitutes for a comparable independent test.
DreamHost advertises 24/7 support through chat and email, as well as free WordPress migration tooling. KnownHost says 24/7 support is available for its WordPress service. Consider the support channels and service scope published for the specific plan you are evaluating; the DreamPress benchmark article’s support-resolution statistic is limited to DreamPress and is DreamHost-reported.
Which host should you choose?
- Choose DreamHost shared hosting for consideration if the first-year advertised price, multiple-site allowance, daily backups, or its proprietary panel fit your needs—and you have checked the renewal rate.
- Choose KnownHost shared hosting for consideration if cPanel and explicit CPU and memory allocations are important, and the plan’s website, storage, and email-account limits suit your site.
- Compare KnownHost managed WordPress with DreamPress if you want WordPress-specific management; weigh the published tools and allocations alongside the price and support terms for each selected plan.
- For VPS, decide how much server administration you want first. DreamHost’s self-managed VPS provides root access and leaves updates and security to you, while its Managed VPS has no root access. Confirm the management model and panel terms for the exact KnownHost VPS product before choosing.
Before ordering, check the full billed term, taxes, renewal price, included email and domain terms, plan-specific control panel, and whether the selected service is shared, managed WordPress, or VPS. KnownHost says most hosting services for new customers have a 30-day money-back guarantee, excluding dedicated servers; DreamHost lists a 30-day money-back guarantee for Launch.
