Five VPNs—Surfshark, Private Internet Access (PIA), ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Proton VPN—appeared among the options reviewers reported working with Prime Video in their own tests. That is not a promise of access: Amazon advises users to deactivate VPN or proxy servers when a title will not play, and results can change by server, region, device, and time.
There is no single agreed winner. Security.org ranked Surfshark first in its 2026 comparison, while TechRadar ranked NordVPN first in its separate guide. Treat both as reviewer-specific findings, not guarantees that a VPN will unlock a particular title or catalog.

Five VPNs reviewers reported working with Prime Video
The distinctions below preserve each reviewer’s findings rather than combining different tests into a universal ranking. Security.org says it tested more than 50 VPNs before selecting six for its 2026 recommendations; TechRadar published a separate 2026 guide with a different top pick.
| VPN | What the cited review says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | Security.org ranked it first among its six recommendations and named it its pick for bypassing Prime Video’s VPN blocker. Security.org’s 2026 comparison | This reflects Security.org’s testing. Access may differ by server, region, device, and time. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Security.org ranked it second and distinguished it for U.S. regional content. Security.org’s 2026 comparison | The review’s finding does not assure access to every U.S. title or from every server. |
| ExpressVPN | Security.org highlighted it for devices without VPN apps. ExpressVPN lists Amazon Fire TV app support. Security.org’s 2026 comparison · ExpressVPN’s Amazon Fire TV app page | ExpressVPN’s support guidance says to connect to a server location matching the country where you are currently located. Account billing address may also affect some title availability. |
| NordVPN | Security.org highlighted its security features; TechRadar ranked it first overall in its separate 2026 guide. Security.org’s 2026 comparison · TechRadar’s 2026 guide | The two rankings come from different publishers and tests; they should not be treated as one combined league table. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org included it as a comparison option. TechRadar reported successful Prime Video access in its tests. Security.org’s 2026 comparison · TechRadar’s 2026 guide | TechRadar also reported excessive buffering and connectivity issues in its tests. |
Security.org’s comparison table also reports price ranges, server counts, split tunneling, Prime Video availability in its test, and obfuscation support. These are findings and product details presented in that page’s 2026 publication context, not timeless specifications.

Why a VPN may still fail with Prime Video
A reviewer’s successful connection is a snapshot, not a service guarantee. Amazon’s help page for playback problems instructs viewers: “Deactivate any VPN or proxy servers.” Amazon Prime Video Help: Issues While Playing Prime Video Titles
If you see the message “Your device is connected to the internet using a VPN or proxy service,” the connection may have been identified and blocked. A VPN also cannot by itself determine whether a particular title is available to your account: ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting guide notes that an Amazon account’s billing address can affect title availability. Choose based on your device and use case
- For a shortlist based on one reviewer’s overall comparison: Surfshark is Security.org’s top-ranked choice in its 2026 comparison. This is that review’s conclusion, not a guarantee of access.
- For the top pick in TechRadar’s separate guide: NordVPN ranked first in TechRadar’s 2026 testing. Security.org’s ordering differs.
- For U.S. regional-content testing: PIA is the option Security.org distinguished for that use case; individual titles and servers may behave differently.
- For a Fire TV device: ExpressVPN lists an Amazon Fire TV app and provides Fire TV and Fire Stick troubleshooting guidance. Confirm compatibility for your particular device and app version; the cited material does not identify a best current Fire TV Stick model.
- For a privacy-oriented comparison option: Proton VPN is included by Security.org and was reported to access Prime Video in TechRadar’s tests, with buffering and connectivity issues also noted.
What to do when Prime Video shows a VPN error
- Follow Amazon’s playback guidance: turn off the VPN or proxy, then try playing the title again. Amazon Prime Video Help: Issues While Playing Prime Video Titles
- Check the app and device: Amazon’s troubleshooting material also recommends checking app or device status and date and time settings.
- If you use a VPN, follow its terms and instructions: ExpressVPN says, “To comply with the Amazon Prime Video Terms of Use and ExpressVPN Terms of Service, you should connect to a server location that matches the country where you are currently located.” Its support page was updated July 21, 2026. ExpressVPN: Troubleshooting for Streaming Prime Video
- Check account-specific availability: title availability may depend on the billing address associated with the Amazon account, according to ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting guide.
If disabling the VPN restores playback, the VPN connection was a factor in the failure. If the title still does not play, continue with Amazon’s device and app troubleshooting rather than assuming a different VPN will resolve it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to read the 2026 recommendations
The five services are candidates reviewers reported working in their own tests, not a dependable way to access every region’s catalog. Security.org and TechRadar do not name the same overall winner, and TechRadar’s Proton VPN results include performance caveats. Use the provider distinctions as a starting point, then weigh device support and the possibility that Amazon will block a connection.
