KnownHost offers two distinct VPS approaches: managed hosting, where its team handles system-level server care, and lower-cost unmanaged hosting, where you take responsibility for the operating system and software. The right choice depends less on the price gap than on who will maintain, secure, and troubleshoot the server. The advertised starting prices are $43.25 per month for managed VPS and $5 per month for unmanaged VPS; confirm checkout pricing, term, and inclusions before ordering.
Who should consider KnownHost VPS?
A VPS can suit a site or application that needs more control or capacity than shared hosting, provided someone can handle its operational needs. KnownHost positions managed VPS toward business owners and agencies, and unmanaged VPS toward developers and system administrators. Those are the provider’s intended audiences, not independent findings about performance.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Consider managed VPS if you want provider help with base-system administration and do not have staff to maintain the server.
- Consider unmanaged VPS if you can administer Linux servers, want root access, and are prepared to own routine maintenance and application configuration.
- Compare alternatives to a VPS if your workload does not require server-level control or you cannot take responsibility for the unmanaged support boundary.

What do the advertised plans cost and include?
The following are provider-listed prices and specifications, not independently tested results. The unmanaged page lists Atlanta, Seattle, and Amsterdam as locations; confirm availability for your order and audience. Every unmanaged tier shown includes two dedicated IPv4 addresses and a /64 IPv6 allocation. Bandwidth is specified on the Entry tier below; the page’s listed figures for the other tiers are not stated here.

The managed comparison also lists proactive monitoring at $9.95 and Imunify options from $7 to $41. It does not establish the billing period or total for a particular configuration in the material available here, so confirm both before treating an add-on as a monthly cost. The page claims free migrations and backups for these managed plans. KnownHost managed VPS comparison

Managed or unmanaged: what responsibility are you buying?
These are different operating models, not simply two prices for the same service. The listed unmanaged Entry plan costs less, but the provider’s support page describes its coverage as hardware management and network availability; the customer handles the server’s operating system, software, and configuration. For unmanaged products, additional support is listed at $75 per hour. The page also says that conversion to managed service may require a reinstall or, at KnownHost’s discretion, a $250 recertification fee. Confirm current policy and applicability to your product before relying on either figure.
For managed VPS and dedicated services, KnownHost describes system-level management covering the base operating system, control panel, services, and security. “Managed” does not by itself establish that every application issue, custom configuration, or software problem is included. Ask support to define the boundary for your intended stack. KnownHost Support Coverage
Rank #3
- Choose unmanaged when you can patch the OS, configure services, secure the server, monitor resource use, and diagnose application and system problems yourself.
- Choose managed when you need system-level help and the cost of that assistance is preferable to assigning the work internally.
- Price the complete setup, including any control panel, security or monitoring add-ons, backup needs, and support beyond the included scope.
How much confidence should you place in the uptime and user reports?
KnownHost’s managed comparison page gives two different uptime figures: 99.995% in its feature table and 99.9% in its FAQ. Because the claims conflict, neither should be treated as the applicable contractual guarantee without checking the current service terms. Ask which commitment applies to your specific service, how uptime is measured, what exclusions apply, and what remedy is available.
The same comparison page describes complimentary redundant backups. Before depending on that claim, confirm that backups cover your exact VPS tier, how long they are retained, whether and how you can restore them, and whether the backup arrangement meets your recovery needs. Keep an independent copy of important data outside the hosting account.

A June 2026 discussion on Reddit includes one customer describing slow VPS-hosted sites and cPanel despite apparently available CPU and memory, alongside an unresolved diagnostic disagreement at the time of posting. Other commenters report years without problems or praise support, and KnownHost staff responded. These are self-selected individual accounts without verified server telemetry or representative sampling; they illustrate questions to investigate, not a reliability rating. Quick Recap
How to evaluate a plan for your workload
- Assign the operating work. Decide who will patch, secure, configure, and troubleshoot the server. If no one on your team can do that, compare managed pricing before considering an unmanaged tier.
- Estimate capacity. Match CPU, guaranteed RAM, and storage to your software and expected demand. The listed resource figures are plan specifications, not evidence of application performance.
- Check the full cost and scope. Confirm checkout price and term, licensing, add-ons, backup coverage, and what support is included or billed separately.
- Choose a location deliberately. The unmanaged page lists Atlanta, Seattle, and Amsterdam. Verify the locations offered for the plan you are ordering and choose based on where your users and systems are located.
- Measure your own service after launch. Use independent uptime and response-time monitoring over time for your own workload and region, and retain off-provider backups. No controlled load, latency, or support-ticket test is established here.
