What is the KitchenAid KF4?
The KF4 is KitchenAid’s fully automatic espresso machine: it grinds beans, brews drinks and can deliver milk through an automatic system. Its touchscreen controls provide access to a menu of more than 20 marketed hot and over-ice options, with adjustable strength, volume and temperature. Check the precise regional model number when shopping. KitchenAid identifies the US machine as KF4 / KES8454 and the UK family as KF4 / 5KES8454; market and color suffixes can differ. A listing’s color code or regional version should not be assumed to have identical availability or specifications.
Does the KF4 make iced coffee or cold brew?
It makes iced coffee and iced espresso using dedicated recipes, but these are not cold brew. KitchenAid’s UK operating guidance says to put ice in the cup first, then select Iced Coffee or Iced Espresso. The machine brews at a lower temperature, which KitchenAid says helps preserve a smooth, balanced flavor as the drink cools. The resulting coffee is poured over the ice; milk or other additions can be added afterward.

Iced coffee
The iced-coffee recipe brews coffee over ice. It is the more coffee-style option in the menu, rather than an espresso shot served over ice.
Iced espresso
The iced-espresso recipe brews espresso to pour over ice. T3 reviewer Bethan Morgan reported a positive result in her hands-on review, but TechRadar’s testing was more critical of the iced-drink menu overall. These are reviewers’ differing assessments, not a guarantee that every recipe, bean or cup of ice will produce the same result.

The lower-temperature recipe and ice-in-cup method do not establish that the machine dispenses a cold drink without ice, makes cold brew, or produces cold milk foam. TechRadar reports that the automatic milk foam is hot only, which limits how directly the milk system can serve iced milk drinks.

How good are the espresso and milk drinks?
TechRadar reported balanced espresso and praised the machine’s compactness, while T3 described its espresso positively and also liked the grinder and touchscreen. Their experience supports the KF4 as a convenience-focused machine capable of pleasing espresso, but it does not settle how every user will rate its taste: coffee beans, settings and personal preference all affect the cup.

Milk is a more qualified part of the proposition. T3 said AutoMilk worked with dairy and plant-based milk in the reviewer’s testing, but that is one reviewer’s result, not a promise for every milk type or brand. T3 also noted that the automatic setup does not offer the latte-art control of a manual milk-steaming workflow. TechRadar’s assessment highlights the hot-foam limitation for iced drinks. If fine control over texture or cold milk drinks is central to your routine, that distinction matters more than the convenience of one-touch delivery.
Footprint, controls and everyday features
KitchenAid markets the KF4 as compact and lists a 3.5-inch color touchscreen on its US product page. Ideal Home describes it as notably slim and reports dimensions of 19 × 36 × 47 cm for the specification it covered. That figure is a source-specific listing, so check the exact regional model and allow room for the machine’s use and maintenance rather than judging fit by width alone.

Published weight figures differ: TechRadar lists 9 kg, while Ideal Home lists 13.5 kg. The available information does not establish whether those figures refer to the same market variant or measurement basis, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
The official US listing specifies a 1.8 L water tank and says the box includes a milk container with hose and lid, a water filter, brew-unit cleaning tablets and a coffee scoop. The UK product guide additionally describes a pre-ground coffee bypass, four user-profile slots, an adjustable dispenser height up to 13.7 cm, a water-hardness test strip and a two-cup option for several listed drinks. Cleaning and personalization
Automatic care and included cleaning tablets are part of KitchenAid’s convenience pitch. That does not mean maintenance disappears: the machine still uses a milk container and hose, and the UK guide describes a pre-ground bypass and multiple profiles rather than a maintenance-free system. The supplied material does not establish a complete cleaning schedule or every cleaning step, so follow the manual for the precise regional machine instead of inferring a routine from the feature name.
Four profile slots, as described in the UK guide, let multiple users save preferences. T3 also noted that the machine dispenses a double shot one at a time rather than grinding and dispensing both shots simultaneously. If you routinely make several drinks in succession, that workflow may be more relevant than the headline menu size.
Price and value
Price depends on country, retailer, date and exact listing. KitchenAid’s US page showed $949.99 alongside $1,299.99 in its comparison area when checked for the cited product information; TechRadar cited a US list price of $1,299.99 and UK list price of £899, while T3 also cited £899 / $1,299. These figures are not a single current offer. Check the live price, stock, warranty terms and regional SKU before buying.
At a price that fits your budget, the KF4’s value rests on whether you will use its combination of automatic grinding, touch controls, milk delivery and over-ice recipes. Paying for those conveniences is harder to justify if you chiefly want carefully controlled milk texture, cold milk foam, or a cold-brew method the machine does not claim to provide.
Who should buy the KitchenAid KF4?
It is a good fit if
- You want a bean-to-cup machine that handles grinding and brewing with minimal manual work.
- You drink both hot espresso-based drinks and coffee over ice, and are comfortable adding ice to the cup yourself.
- A compact, touchscreen-led machine and automatic milk delivery matter more to you than manual milk-steaming control.
- Multiple users can make use of the four profiles described in the UK guide.
Consider another kind of machine if
- You specifically want cold brew: the KF4’s iced recipes are brewed drinks served over ice.
- You expect the machine to dispense cold milk foam for iced lattes.
- You want to shape milk texture by hand or prioritize latte-art control.
- You need a confirmed fit for a particular counter, or exact weight and dimensions for a specific regional SKU; published figures vary by source.

The KitchenAid KF4 is a capable-looking convenience-first espresso machine with an unusually prominent over-ice menu for its tier. Its best case is straightforward: espresso and milk drinks at the touch of a screen, plus lower-temperature coffee recipes intended to be poured over ice. The iced results are the key uncertainty, with TechRadar and T3 reaching different judgments, and the automatic milk system is a compromise if you need cold foam or manual texture control. Buy it for its overall one-touch workflow—not on the assumption that its iced button means cold brew or guarantees a perfectly chilled drink.
