Which USB Port Is Fastest on Your PC? How to Stop Slow File Transfers

If your external drive is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, moving it to a faster USB port can remove one bottleneck—but it will not guarantee a particular copy speed. Check the PC’s specifications, then confirm the cable and drive support the same or a faster USB data rate. A USB port’s shape or color alone cannot tell you the whole story.

First, check whether the port is the bottleneck

USB 2.0 has a published high-speed signaling rate of 480 Mbps. USB 3.0 supports up to 5 Gbps, while USB 3.2 covers 5, 10, and 20 Gbps data rates. Those figures describe protocol signaling, not measured file-copy speeds: actual transfers can be slower because of the drive, the source storage, the workload, a hub, or host and controller behavior.

A SuperSpeed drive connected to a USB 2.0 port operates at USB 2.0 high speed, according to Microsoft’s USB in Windows FAQ. Moving the same drive to a compatible faster port may help if the port was limiting the connection, but official sources do not establish an average improvement or a typical user result.

How to identify a faster port

Microsoft says USB 3.0 ports are typically blue or marked with the SuperSpeed logo. Treat those as clues, not proof: a PC can have both USB 2.0 and faster ports, and color alone is not a universal specification. Look up the exact PC or motherboard model and consult its port specifications or port map to confirm the data rate.

USB-IF recommends consumer-facing speed names such as USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 40Gbps, and USB 80Gbps in its January 2024 data-performance guidance. These labels are more useful than relying on specification-version numbers alone, but the PC’s documentation is still the way to identify what a particular port supports.

USB-C does not tell you the data speed

USB-C describes a connector family, not a particular data protocol or speed. USB-IF explicitly states, “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” A USB-C port may support different protocols depending on the product, and USB-C cables also vary. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable does not carry the signals needed for USB 3.2 or USB4.

ELUTENG PCIE USB 3.0 Card 7 Ports PCI Expree to USB Expansion Card Super Speed 5Gbps PCI-e USB3 Hub Controller Adapter for Windows 11/10/8/7/XP/Vista
  • 【7 ports PCIe USB card】 There is a 2-phase independent power supply module, which can feed one interface per output port to escape power shortage. Can operate without an external or auxiliary power supply; the seven interfaces operate independently and do not affect each other. Seven USB 3.0 Type A ports can be added externally to the PC case. Note: Not compatible with PS3/PS4.
  • 【High Speed Transmission】USB3.0 theoretical speed up to 5Gbps, provides 10 times faster transmission speed than USB2.0. This usb expansion card enables quick access to files and transfer of HD movies, photos, music, etc.
  • 【Stable power supply】The usb pcie card adopt NEC720201&NEC720210 chip. The USB interface can supply 5V2A power to external devices. Solid capacitors with good performance are used for low impedance, low temperature stability, and high temperature wave resistance.
  • 【7 independent solid capacitors】Each interface has a stable voltage solid capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The dielectric material of the solid capacitors is made of conductive polymer material, which has the advantages of high stability, long life, and low ESR (faster charging and discharging speed).
  • 【Wide compatibility】 PCI-E X1 X4 X8 X16 compatible. Note: Not compatible with older PCI, backward compatible with USB 2.0 / 1.1, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / XP / Linux, not Mac compatible. Note: WIN8 and WIN10/11 users do not need to install the drive; XP and WIN7 users can download, unzip, install, and complete. (The corresponding installation directory for CD is DRIVERSǐ201R30230.EXE.)

For a faster connection, the PC’s host port, cable, and external device all need to support the relevant capability. If one part only supports USB 2.0, the connection can fall back to USB 2.0 speed. Check the cable’s stated data rate as well as the port and drive specifications; connector shape by itself does not confirm compatibility.

Compare the whole connection, not just the port

Part of the connection What to check
PC port Use the exact PC or motherboard specification to identify the port’s data rate.
Cable Confirm that its stated data capability supports the intended connection; a USB 2.0 cable can limit a faster port and drive.
Hub or adapter Check whether an intervening hub or adapter supports the faster connection; a USB 2.0 hub can limit a SuperSpeed device.
External drive Check the drive’s interface and capability. A faster PC port cannot make a slower drive transfer at the port’s signaling rate.

USB-IF lists USB 3.2 at 5, 10, and 20 Gbps, and describes demanding storage applications as one use case for higher data rates. That does not mean a USB 10Gbps external SSD will copy every file at 10 Gbps: the drive’s actual performance and the rest of the connection still matter. USB4 also shares link capacity among device types, so its headline rate is not a promise of a particular storage transfer speed.

A practical way to troubleshoot slow transfers

  1. Identify the port. Find your PC or motherboard model and use its specifications or port map to confirm which port supports the faster data rate. Do not rely only on the socket’s color or shape.
  2. Connect the drive directly. If it is going through a hub or adapter, connect it directly to the confirmed faster port for a comparison. A USB 2.0 hub can hold a SuperSpeed drive to USB 2.0 operation.
  3. Verify the cable and drive. Check their specifications. A USB 2.0 cable or a drive with a slower interface can limit the connection even when the PC port is faster.
  4. Check for connection problems. Microsoft lists an old hub firmware, a cable with signal-integrity problems, and outdated device or host-controller firmware among possible causes when a device does not run at expected SuperSpeed.
  5. Compare the same transfer conditions. Use the same drive, files, and source location when comparing ports. A change in workload or source drive can affect copy results, so a faster port alone does not prove what caused a difference.

Microsoft’s FAQ includes Windows 8-era examples for viewing USB connection speed; those menus should not be assumed to exist in current Windows releases. For model-specific port details, the PC maker’s documentation is the relevant reference. Microsoft also provides background on USB Type-C connectors on Windows systems and fixing USB-C problems in Windows.
