Kiro Workflows coordinate reusable, multi-step agent tasks in the background. They turn a requested outcome into a plan of agent sessions, handoffs, and—when useful—parallel branches or loops, while you can continue in the parent conversation. Workflows are opt-in, and setup differs across Kiro’s IDE, CLI, and Web clients.
What Kiro Workflows do
A workflow is a reusable plan for coordinating agent work. You describe the outcome and the level of structure or review you want; Kiro proposes the steps and agents, and the Kiro runtime executes the plan. A workflow can be a straightforward sequence or a graph with loops, parallel branches, and waits. The feature is intended for work with meaningful stages, independent reviews, or repeated checks—not as a mandatory wrapper for every agent request. Kiro’s Workflows documentation describes the feature and its mechanics.

Examples include investigating an unfamiliar codebase, delivering a feature through planning and implementation, or iterating through attempts to fix a failing build. A workflow can run in the background, leaving the parent chat available for other work.

Separate sessions and explicit handoffs
Each workflow step runs in its own session with fresh context. One step does not simply inherit another agent’s full conversation: relevant results or declared artifacts must be passed forward through explicit handoffs. This separation can help a later reviewer assess work independently, but only if the workflow supplies the evidence and context that reviewer needs.
#1 Best Overall
Parallel branches are useful when agents can assess the same work independently. The workflow then needs a join policy to determine how their outcomes come together. Before building a complex recipe, decide what each step should receive, what it must produce, and how branches or retries should resolve.
How a workflow run proceeds
- Describe the outcome. Tell Kiro what you want done and how much structure, delegation, or review is appropriate. Kiro proposes a workflow plan, including steps and agents.
- Review the proposed work. Check whether the stages, handoffs, and any parallel reviews make sense for the task. Do not assume a plan is self-supervising: agents may pause for input, and configuration changes can prompt for approval.
- Start the run. The runtime executes the plan in the background. Each step receives a separate session with fresh context.
- Monitor and intervene as needed. Depending on the client, you can inspect activity and status, answer a paused step, message or steer an agent, and use available pause, resume, stop, or retry controls.
- Save a useful process as a recipe. Kiro documents JSON and YAML recipe formats. A saved recipe can be rerun; it is intended to work across IDE, CLI, and Web, although enabling and managing workflows differ by client.
Enable Workflows in Kiro
Workflows were announced on September 30, 2026, and Kiro’s documentation describes the feature as opt-in in each client. The instructions below reflect official documentation and release information available through October 7, 2026. Kiro cautions that Workflows may not yet appear for every account, so the option’s absence may reflect rollout availability rather than a setup mistake.

The available controls and recipe-management steps can change as the feature rolls out. If an option is missing, check the current documentation for your client and account rather than assuming the same menu path applies everywhere. The Web launch included recipes named investigate, feature-pipeline, and publish-pr; treat those names as launch details, not a guarantee that they remain the current defaults.

| Feature | What it is for | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Specs | Requirements, technical design, and tasks for a specific feature or bug. | You need explicit planning artifacts before implementation. Kiro’s specs documentation describes the process. |
| Workflows | A sequence or graph coordinating agent sessions, handoffs, loops, waits, and branches. | The process itself needs delegation, staged work, or independent review. See Kiro’s Workflows documentation. |
| Steering | Persistent project conventions and context that guide agent behavior across work. | Agents need shared repository guidance, but you do not need an orchestrated sequence. Kiro’s overview of steering and related features explains its role. |
| Hooks | Configured agent actions or shell commands triggered by supported events. | You want an event to trigger an action, rather than coordinating a larger task. See Kiro’s hooks documentation. |
They can also complement one another: a spec can define a feature plan, steering can provide repository conventions, hooks can automate event-based checks, and a workflow can coordinate the larger sequence of agent work. None is a substitute for all the others.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the extra orchestration is worthwhile
Choose a workflow when a task has distinct stages, meaningful handoffs, or checks that benefit from separate agent sessions. A feature that needs planning, implementation, and an independent review is a stronger fit than a small one-step change. A workflow may also help when a process needs to wait for a result or repeat work until a condition is met.

- Prefer ordinary chat for small, direct tasks where one interactive session can do the work without a designed process.
- Prefer a spec when you mainly need requirements, design, and tasks for a particular feature or bug.
- Use a workflow when you need explicit sequencing, isolated agent sessions, handoffs, parallel review, or loops.
- Add steering or hooks where appropriate when the task also needs persistent project conventions or event-triggered actions.
More coordination is not free: Kiro says workflows with multiple agents, loops, and reviews use more tokens than a single session, with usage depending on the work performed. The documentation does not establish a fixed token cost or guaranteed time savings. In the IDE 1.2.4 release notes, Kiro also describes prompts before agents change workflow recipes and specified Kiro configuration; untrusted-workspace behavior adds further prompts.
