Discord can let you check in on your Kiro Crew agent from your phone, without SSHing into anything—but the agent does not run on the phone. Discord sends messages to a Kiro Crew Gateway running on a computer or server; that host keeps the project files, memory, and active sessions. Start a task at your desk, leave while a task or review is in progress, and continue the conversation in a Discord DM as long as the Gateway stays online.
What Kiro Crew and Discord do together
Kiro’s August 4, 2026 changelog describes Kiro Crew as an open-source personal AI agent that runs on your machine through kiro-cli and the Agent Client Protocol. Its official repository describes it as a persistent development workspace: sessions, memory, schedules, and task checkpoints survive Gateway restarts. The same agent can be reached through its dashboard, desktop app, CLI, Slack, and Discord.

Discord is a remote control and conversation surface, not the computer where code executes. A DM reaches the Gateway, which maps it to an isolated agent session. The Gateway host retains the session state, memory, tools, approvals, schedules, and project files. Kiro’s changelog puts the benefit simply: “Every channel shares the same memory and tools, so you can start something at your desk and follow up from your phone.”

- A Kiro account and plan for inference. Kiro Crew is Apache-2.0 open source and has no separate subscription, but model requests use your Kiro plan.
- Kiro Crew installed on a computer or server, and
kiro-cliinstalled separately withkiro-cli logincompleted. - A Discord account and a bot token from the Discord Developer Portal.
- A Gateway host that remains powered on and connected while you want to reach the agent. A sleeping laptop cannot respond to a DM.
You can install Kiro Crew using its official installer, desktop package, Docker image, or source build. For the Discord bot, plan to move between the Discord Developer Portal, Kiro Crew settings, and Discord itself.

Connect Kiro Crew to Discord
- Install and authenticate. Install Kiro Crew using your preferred supported method. Install
kiro-cliseparately and runkiro-cli loginto authenticate for model inference. - Start the Gateway. Open the local dashboard at
http://localhost:5476, the repository’s default address, and confirm it loads on the Gateway host. - Create a Discord bot. In the Discord Developer Portal, create an application and bot, then reset and copy its token. In Discord, enable Developer Mode so you can copy your user ID.
- Enter the bot details in Kiro Crew. In Kiro Crew settings, open Messaging Channels → Discord, enable the channel, enter the bot token and your allowed user ID, then save.
- Invite and message the bot. Use the Discord installation link to add the bot to a server, then DM it. Kiro Crew creates a Discord-driven session that appears in the Kiro Crew interface.
- Choose the project and keep the host available. Scope the session to the intended repository. Keep the Gateway running on a machine that will not sleep or shut down while you are away.

The official guide documents service installation so the Gateway can persist across restarts and start at boot. For remote access, note that the repository says the dashboard binds to loopback by default; exposing it remotely requires authenticated configuration. You do not need to expose the dashboard just to chat with the bot through Discord.
Protect the bot and Gateway credentials
Kiro Crew’s official remote guide says chat-platform and owner-identity credentials are read from ~/.kiro/crew/.env; kiro-cli manages the model credential. Keep the Discord bot token private, allow only the intended Discord user IDs, and avoid sharing or publishing the environment file. An always-on host improves availability, but it also makes careful credential handling and access control more important.

What to expect when you use it away from your laptop
Once configured, send the bot a DM from Discord to continue with the agent. The session is associated with Kiro Crew, so you can move between supported interfaces without treating Discord as a separate agent with separate project files. Your phone is the convenient place to send instructions or review replies; the Gateway host must remain online to process them.
Response time varies with network conditions and model latency; there is no established response-time benchmark to use as a guarantee. Bot creation also involves several interfaces, so the initial setup is less direct than simply installing a phone app.

Kiro Crew’s README describes its premise this way: “Most agent sessions end when the chat closes. Kiro Crew runs continuously on hardware you control and keeps working between conversations.” In practice, persistence means saved sessions and task state remain available through Gateway restarts; it does not mean a powered-off or disconnected host can act on a new Discord message.
