For the broad in-universe chronology, start with the ancient-era χ and Union χ stories, then Dark Road, Birth by Sleep, and the later Sora games. For a first playthrough, though, use the release-style story order instead: begin with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, then Re:Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. The two orders are different because the series uses prequels, overlapping events, and stories set far before Sora’s adventure.
Kingdom Hearts story chronology
This is a practical, broad sequence of the story eras, not an official newcomer play list. Some entries overlap, so placing every scene in one exact line would suggest more precision than the timeline supports.

- χ Back Cover and the χ / Union χ story: The earliest era, set around the ancient Keyblade period. χ Back Cover is a movie; the wider Union χ story is separate story material.
- Dark Road: Young Xehanort’s story, set before Birth by Sleep.
- Birth by Sleep Final Mix.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage.
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
- 358/2 Days and Chain of Memories: Their events overlap the transition between the first game and Kingdom Hearts II. Treat them as an interleaved period, rather than assuming one story ends entirely before the other begins.
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.
- Re:coded.
- Dream Drop Distance HD.
- Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind.
- Melody of Memory: Follows the Kingdom Hearts III-era story.
Square Enix’s timeline places the χ stories well before the numbered Sora games, but it does not provide a complete newcomer-focused chronological play sequence. The ordering above is a practical synthesis; the overlapping stories are why an exact, scene-by-scene chronology is not presented as a simple list.

If you want the series to introduce its story in a release-style narrative progression, follow this order. It is an editorial recommendation, not a sequence Square Enix labels as mandatory.

- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
- Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
- 358/2 Days — the HD collection presents it as a cutscene compilation; the original Nintendo DS game is needed for its original gameplay.
- Birth by Sleep Final Mix
- Re:coded — the HD collection presents it as a cutscene compilation.
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- χ Back Cover — a movie. Add the available Union χ story material if you want the wider ancient-era story.
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep
- Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind
- Melody of Memory
- Dark Road story material, if you want more of Xehanort’s backstory.
This route keeps the early Sora adventures ahead of the prequels that explain much earlier events. Starting with the earliest in-universe material instead can move context and reveals away from the sequence in which earlier entries introduce them.
