Square Enix lists Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported for the PC version of Kingdom Hearts. “Partial” matters: keyboard and mouse may still be needed to navigate some menus or sections, and compatibility can vary by game and storefront. Here’s how to check your setup and troubleshoot without assuming one fix works for everyone.
Which controllers does Kingdom Hearts support on PC?
Square Enix’s controller support page names four categories as partially supported: Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers. The page does not identify a particular Kingdom Hearts game, storefront, or controller model, so its list is not a per-release compatibility matrix.
Steam’s platform-level controller guidance is broader than that game-specific list. Steam says it supports official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers in Big Picture mode; third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported by Steam. That does not establish that Switch Pro controllers are supported by Square Enix for Kingdom Hearts. Steam also notes that controller support varies by game. What does “partial support” mean in practice?
It means a controller may work for some parts of play without being sufficient for every menu or setup step. Square Enix warns that keyboard and mouse may be required to navigate a portion of the game. Keep them connected and within reach rather than assuming a gamepad will handle every screen.

Compatibility also depends on which PC release you are playing and how the controller reaches the game. The official support page does not say whether its list applies identically across storefronts or every Kingdom Hearts release. For context, Steam lists KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX- as released on June 13, 2024, with Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or later and DirectX 11 listed in its requirements. How to troubleshoot a Kingdom Hearts controller not working on PC
Use these as diagnostic steps, not guaranteed publisher-approved fixes. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the game or storefront recognizes the controller differently.

- Identify the exact game and storefront. Note the Kingdom Hearts title or collection and whether you launch it through Steam, Epic Games, or another PC storefront. Input behavior can differ between releases, and Square Enix’s support page does not provide a game-by-game or storefront-by-storefront matrix.
- Connect the controller before starting the game. Check whether your operating system or storefront detects it. If it is not recognized there, the problem may be outside the game; this check is a general troubleshooting step, not an instruction stated by Square Enix.
- Test one input layer at a time. If you use Steam, inspect the game’s per-title controller configuration and compare native controller input with Steam Input deliberately. Avoid changing several remapping layers at once. Steam’s general documentation does not prescribe a Kingdom Hearts-specific setting, so treat this as a way to isolate the cause rather than a known fix.
- Check menus and gameplay separately. A controller can respond during play but fail to navigate a menu, or vice versa. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for the parts that need them.
- Contact the game’s support team if the problem continues. Epic’s guidance for controller issues in third-party games directs players to the game developer or support team rather than offering technical support for the external-device issue. See Epic Games Player Support.
Kingdom Hearts PC controller buttons swapped or right stick not working
Player discussions on Steam describe examples of shuffled button mappings and right-stick input problems. These are individual reports, not evidence that all players encounter the same issue or that any particular workaround reliably resolves it. The reports are in the Steam Community discussion “PLEASE FIX THESE ISSUES”.
If buttons are swapped, check whether the game’s own controller options let you correct the mapping, then retest both menus and gameplay. For right-stick trouble, first establish whether the stick is recognized outside the game and whether a remapping layer is active; change only one configuration at a time. The available official guidance does not verify a universal fix for either symptom.

Does Kingdom Hearts on PC support DualSense and Xbox controllers?
Square Enix lists both DualSense and Xbox controller families as partially supported for the PC version. That is the clearest publisher-level answer, but it is not a guarantee for every model, game release, connection method, or storefront. Steam’s general support for controller categories should not be treated as confirmation that each controller works in every Kingdom Hearts title.

Not as a first troubleshooting step. Square Enix names controller families, not recommended models, and the available material does not compare specific devices or establish that replacing a controller will fix detection, mapping, or stick issues. If you are choosing a gamepad, use the listed families as a starting point and retain keyboard-and-mouse access for sections where controller navigation is incomplete.
