Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] makes much of the series easier to access, but it does not answer the question players approaching Kingdom Hearts 4 actually need answered: which earlier stories will matter? Square Enix has announced KH4 for late 2027, yet its announcements do not specify a required catch-up list. And the collection is not a set of fully playable versions of every story it gathers.
What problem can’t the collection solve?
A bundle can gather older releases in one place. It cannot tell new or returning players how much they need to know before starting the next mainline game. Square Enix has not identified a mandatory play order or said that KH4 requires any particular earlier title in the official announcements reviewed. So the concern is a gap in guidance, not a confirmed claim that KH4 will be inaccessible to newcomers.

That distinction matters because Kingdom Hearts is a continuing story told across multiple games and formats. A large collection can reduce the hassle of finding past entries, but it does not decide which plot points KH4 will assume players remember—or how the game will explain them.

Square Enix describes the package as three earlier bundles: HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. Its listed contents cover a substantial portion of the console saga, but some entries are presented as cutscene or movie material rather than playable games.

The table shows why “all-in-one” should be read as a bundle description, not proof that every story installment is represented as a game you can play. The official product page calls HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX “an essential collection of the first six stories in the KINGDOM HEARTS series,” but that does not make its cutscene-based components equivalent to full game versions. See Square Enix’s collection page for the listed package contents.
Does the collection include every Kingdom Hearts story?
It includes many major console entries and story segments, but the official contents do not establish that it contains every game or story artifact associated with the series. The announcement materials also do not establish that Missing-Link content will be incorporated into KH4. Avoid treating the collection’s broad scope as a guarantee of complete coverage or as a checklist Square Enix says players must finish.

Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of June 2025. That combined figure indicates the series’ reach; it is not a count of unique players and does not tell us how many people will need a catch-up explanation for KH4.
What has Square Enix said about Kingdom Hearts 4?
Square Enix has announced KH4 for late 2027. Its official description places Sora and familiar characters in Quadratum and says he will travel through worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar. A later announcement names a world inspired by Coco. The platform listing includes Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Rank #3
- The latest installment in the beloved Kingdom Hearts series, Re:Coded unites Sora, Mickey, Donald, Goofy and a host of familiar faces from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy once again for an exciting new adventure
- All-new features include a new character growth system created specifically for the Nintendo DS release, building on the series' immersive blend of action and role-playing elements
- Guide Sora like never before through exciting new boss battles
- Players can design their own avatar using over 800 unlockable parts and trade playable maps with friends
- Varied gameplay inspired by side-scrolling, shooting and classic Final Fantasy games
Those announcements describe the setting, characters, and platforms, but they do not give a prerequisite list or say how much earlier continuity the game will recap. The central uncertainty is therefore practical: players cannot yet know whether a focused selection of prior stories will be enough, or which cutscene segments deserve attention before KH4.

Until Square Enix publishes more specific guidance, use the collection as an access route, not as an official required syllabus. If you want to follow the series broadly, play the included playable entries and watch the cutscene/movie presentations where the collection offers them. If you mainly want to prepare for KH4, wait for the developer to clarify prerequisites before assuming that finishing every item is necessary.

- The HD remastered compilation brings six beloved KINGDOM HEARTS adventures to the PlayStation 4
- KINGDOM HEARTS HD 15 + 25 ReMIX gives fans the opportunity to experience all of their favourite moments from the series so far for the very first time on one platform
- The full list of titles included in KINGDOM HEARTS HD 15 + 25 ReMIX are KINGDOM HEARTS HD 15 ReMIX including KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories, KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD remastered cinematics)
- KINGDOM HEARTS HD 25 ReMIX including KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX, KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX, KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded
- KINGDOM HEARTS is a series of role-playing games created through the collaboration of Disney Interactive and Square Enix
- Want to play rather than watch? Check the format of each entry first; 358/2 Days, Re:coded, and χ Back Cover are presented as cutscene or movie material in the collection.
- Buying physical? Square Enix says an internet connection is required to download additional data to play the physical collection. The disc or cartridge is not a fully self-contained copy.
- Choosing a platform? The collection was announced for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows. Square Enix lists physical formats for PS5 and Switch 2; storefront availability can vary by region.
The collection was released on October 8, 2026, so that date has passed. The official announcement set that release date across the listed platforms; consult the relevant regional storefront for current availability.
What Switch owners should know
This is a separate, platform-specific transition detail rather than a KH4 prerequisite. Sales of the Kingdom Hearts cloud editions for Switch ended June 9, 2026, and their service is scheduled to end June 9, 2027. Eligible owners can receive discounts on corresponding digital Switch 2 versions and transfer cloud-version save data to Switch 2. The physical Collection [I~III] is not eligible for that discount. Check Square Enix’s official information for applicable regional terms.
The real limitation is guidance, not access
Collection [I~III] is a useful way to reach many earlier Kingdom Hearts stories, with a clear caveat: some components are presentations of story material, not playable games. Its limits do not prove KH4 will demand a complete series marathon. What remains unanswered is whether Square Enix will identify a concise route into KH4 or explain what newcomers need to know. Until it does, players can choose how deeply to catch up, but cannot rely on the collection alone to define the essential path.
