Choose Kobo if you want to borrow compatible library ebooks or read EPUB and other supported files from multiple sources. Choose Kindle if your reading is centered on Amazon’s ebook store and services, or your U.S. library offers Kindle-format loans. Neither is a universal winner: library access depends on your location, library catalog, loan format, and exact device model.
Kindle vs. Kobo at a glance
| Your priority | Likely fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Borrow public-library ebooks outside the U.S. | Kobo may fit better | Your library uses OverDrive/Libby, your Kobo model is supported, and the ebook loan is available in a compatible format. |
| Borrow Kindle-format books from a U.S. library | Either, depending on your library and titles | The library offers the Kindle Book format for the specific title. |
| Read EPUB files or books from multiple sources | Kobo | The file format, DRM, and whether Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is required. |
| Use Amazon purchases, Prime Reading, or Kindle Unlimited | Kindle | Service and title availability in your country, and compatibility with your device. |
| Take notes, use a stylus, read comics, or view large documents | Compare specific models | Screen size, stylus support, supported formats, software, and current price. |
Both brands have their own ebook stores. A September 25, 2025 TechRadar comparison describes Kindle as Amazon-centered and Kobo as friendlier to wired sideloading and a wider range of files. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee for every model, file, or country.

Can you use Libby or borrow library books?
Kindle library borrowing is limited to the U.S.
OverDrive states that Kindle library books are available for U.S. libraries only. Its Kindle ereaders help page, last updated May 7, 2026, describes Kindle devices as designed to work with the Kindle Book format and notes that U.S.-only availability. If you live elsewhere, check which ebook formats your library supports rather than assuming a Kindle can open its loans.

Many newer Kobo models connect to OverDrive
Libby says many newer Kobo models include built-in OverDrive support, allowing readers to add a library card and read ebooks on the device. You can browse and borrow on a compatible Kobo, or borrow in Libby and sync a compatible loan over Wi-Fi when the same library card is linked in both services. However, some Libby ebook loans will not sync to Kobo; Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo devices. These details appear in Libby’s Kobo help page, updated February 26, 2026.

Availability depends on the library and the title
OverDrive/Libby access and individual title availability vary by library. Kobo’s library borrowing instructions cover borrowing through a library website as well as direct device support. For an older Kobo or certain DRM-protected downloads, Kobo documents transferring a loan with ADE. Follow the current instructions on Kobo’s page for setup and authorization.
- Search your library’s catalog for the titles and formats you actually expect to borrow.
- Confirm that your library uses a service and loan format supported by the exact e-reader model.
- Check whether your typical loans sync directly or require a computer and ADE.
Will EPUB and other files work?
Kobo’s supported formats
Kobo lists these formats for its eReaders: EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR. Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi devices are exceptions to EPUB3 support. Its format guide also explains that ACSM files indicate a DRM-protected EPUB or PDF. Adobe DRM books require ADE to transfer them to an eReader.

That broad format list can make Kobo a practical fit for a mixed collection, but a file extension alone does not guarantee that a book will open: DRM and the transfer method matter. Check those details for the particular ebook before relying on a Kobo workflow.

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing format guide explains how publishing formats affect book rendering. It says reflowable formats suit text-heavy books and support adjustable font settings and orientation; some fixed-layout formats restrict text resizing, selection, or accessibility features. This is guidance for how Kindle books are published and displayed, not a complete list of formats a consumer Kindle can import.

If your question is whether an existing file will work on a particular Kindle, verify that device’s current import instructions and the file’s DRM. The publishing-format guide alone cannot settle that question. For readers moving books between stores or devices, do not assume that a purchase in one ecosystem will transfer to the other; confirm the title’s actual device compatibility.

Choose Kindle for an Amazon-centered library
Kindle is the straightforward choice when you already buy most ebooks from Amazon or rely on Amazon reading services. Before choosing, confirm that the services and specific titles you use are available in your market and work with your intended device. Library borrowing is an additional possibility for U.S. readers when the library offers the Kindle Book format for a particular title.

Choose Kobo for library and file flexibility
Kobo is a stronger starting point if you want a compatible OverDrive/Libby workflow or regularly bring supported files from different sources. Its native format list is broad, but DRM, device age, and transfer requirements can still affect what you can read. Kobo Plus is available in some markets, according to the September 2025 TechRadar comparison; check local availability rather than assuming it is offered everywhere.
Compare models for hardware-specific needs
Brand choice does not settle questions such as screen size, lighting, waterproofing, physical page controls, stylus and note-taking support, or suitability for comics and large documents. Those features vary by model. How to check which e-reader works with your library
- Open your library’s ebook catalog. Search for a title you want and note the available formats and borrowing service.
- Check Kindle eligibility if you are considering Kindle. OverDrive’s Kindle-library borrowing applies to U.S. libraries, and your library must offer the title in Kindle Book format.
- Check Kobo compatibility if you are considering Kobo. Confirm that the model supports your library’s OverDrive/Libby workflow and that the title’s ebook loan can sync in a compatible format.
- Check the file and DRM workflow. For a personal EPUB or a library download, identify the format, DRM, and whether ADE or a computer transfer is required.
- Compare device features only after confirming access. Check current model specifications for the screen, lighting, waterproofing, controls, and note-taking features that matter to you.
