Yes—Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones can be worth buying at the right current price if you want strong noise isolation, a warm, clear sound and long battery life. They are a less certain choice if you are sensitive to headband pressure or if the newer WH-1000XM6 costs only a little more. Fit and price matter as much as the headline specifications.
How good do the WH-1000XM5 sound?
RTINGS describes the XM5’s sound as warm and reports very good audio reproduction accuracy. That is a review assessment, not a promise that every listener will prefer its tuning. What Hi-Fi? found the XM5 clearer and more open than the XM4, with a more precise low end. It also notes that Sony changed from the XM4’s 40 mm driver to a 30 mm carbon-fibre-composite dome driver; driver size alone does not determine which headphone will sound better to you. RTINGS’ review and What Hi-Fi?’s Sony headphone guide provide those listening assessments.

Sony lists SBC, AAC and LDAC wireless audio codecs. LDAC support may be useful with compatible devices and settings, but it does not guarantee an audible improvement; source compatibility and personal preference still matter. Sony’s specifications list the supported codecs.
Noise cancellation is a major reason to choose them
RTINGS calls the XM5’s noise isolation outstanding, noting that it reduces office chatter and bus-engine noise. That makes the headphones especially relevant for commuting, travel and shared workspaces. Noise cancellation can lessen those sounds, but it does not make every environment silent. See RTINGS’ assessment for its review findings.

Will they stay comfortable for long sessions?
Comfort reports differ. What Hi-Fi?’s testers found the fit favorable, while RTINGS notes that people with smaller heads may feel pressure at the top of the head, particularly during extended listening. Neither report settles how the headphones will fit you. If possible, try them on; otherwise, check the seller’s return policy before buying, especially if you plan to wear them for hours at a time.
How long does the battery last?
Sony rates continuous music playback at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed runtimes. Sony’s help guide gives codec-specific estimates: AAC is rated up to those same 30- and 40-hour figures, while LDAC estimates are shorter. Sony also warns that settings and conditions affect playback time; using DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat or EQ can shorten runtime. The figures are therefore best treated as planning estimates for the relevant settings, not as a promise for every listening setup. See Sony’s specifications and the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.

As a separate reference, RTINGS reports approximately 27 hours of continuous playback in its review, retested July 2, 2026. That is its test result, not a universal guarantee, and it need not match Sony’s maximum because test settings and conditions can differ. RTINGS’ review reports the result.

Sony lists an approximate 3.5-hour charging time. Its help guide says a three-minute charge can provide about one hour of music playback under stated conditions; a USB-PD-compatible charger can provide more playback in that short charging window. The actual result depends on the charging setup and use conditions. Sony’s guide lists a USB Type-C cable, headphone cable and carrying case for the WH-1000XM5 variant. Sony’s specifications and its Help Guide cover these details.

How to judge the XM5’s value against newer headphones
The WH-1000XM5 is no longer Sony’s newest generation: RTINGS identifies the WH-1000XM6 as its successor. That makes the XM5’s value dependent on the current price difference, not on an old list price. Compare live prices for both models and consider whether the XM5’s sound, noise isolation, fit and battery suit your needs. The available review findings do not establish that the XM5 is categorically better or worse than the XM6.
Sony’s US store listed the XM5 at $299.99 when accessed for this article, but prices and availability change; that listing is not a guaranteed or typical street price. Check the Sony US product page and other current retailers before deciding.
