On Kindle e-readers, Special Offers appear as screensavers while the device is asleep and as sponsored items on the home screen. If your Kindle was bought with ads, Amazon lets you remove them for a one-time fee; the amount for your device appears in your Amazon account before you confirm payment.
Where Kindle Special Offers appear
Amazon describes Kindle e-reader ads as screensavers shown when the device is in sleep mode and sponsored items on the home screen. The home-screen items are marked “Sponsored.” The ads are not described as appearing over the text while you read. See Amazon’s explanation of ads on Kindle and Fire Tablet.
Kindle e-reader ads are different from Fire tablet ads
Fire tablets are a separate product category, and their ad placements differ: Amazon says ads appear on the lock screen, with sponsored tiles also appearing in the Continue and Discover row. Those placements should not be assumed to describe a Kindle e-reader.
Why some Kindles cost less with ads
Amazon says it may offer some device models at subsidized prices by including personalized advertising. The availability of ad-supported and ad-free purchase options, and the purchase-price difference, can vary by model and marketplace. The official help information does not provide current model-by-model prices.

How to remove Special Offers from your Kindle
- Open Amazon’s Manage Your Devices page and select Devices.
- Select the Kindle e-reader you want to update.
- Under Special Offers, select Remove offers.
- Review the amount in the pop-up window. Amazon says this window displays the price to remove ads.
- If you accept the amount, select End Offers and Pay the Fee.
Amazon says the payment is a one-time charge to the 1-Click payment method on the account. Labels and layout can change, so follow the options shown for your selected device. See Amazon’s removal instructions.

How to find the fee for your Kindle
There is no single removal price that applies to every Kindle. Amazon says the one-time payment covers the difference between the device price with and without lock-screen ads, and its removal flow shows the price for the Kindle you select. Check the amount in Manage Your Devices before confirming; do not rely on a price quoted for another model, account, or marketplace.
