Measure speckle correlations by illuminating a scattering sample with coherent light, recording how its scattered intensity changes over time, and calculating the normalized intensity autocorrelation g2(τ). The curve’s decay reflects sample dynamics, but turning it into a physical quantity requires a model suited to the scattering regime, motion, and source–detector geometry.
What speckle correlation measures
Coherent light scattered by a material creates a speckle pattern. If particles or structures in the sample move, the scattered field changes and the speckle intensity fluctuates. Measuring those fluctuations over time gives a way to study dynamics without tracking individual scatterers.

In a common implementation, the measured quantity is the normalized intensity autocorrelation:

g2(τ) = ⟨I(t)I(t + τ)⟩ / ⟨I(t)⟩²
Here, I(t) is the detected intensity, τ is the time delay, and the averages are formed from valid pairs of samples. The function is usually near one at delays long enough that intensities are no longer correlated. Its value and rate of approach to that baseline describe how quickly the speckle pattern changes.

How to measure g2(τ)
- Illuminate the sample. Use a coherent source and define the measurement geometry: transmission through the sample or collection in backscatter. Keep the source and detector positions fixed for a measurement series.
- Collect scattered light. A single detector channel can record intensity fluctuations over time. Alternatively, a camera can record many speckles at once, providing multiple spatial intensity traces for ensemble averaging.
- Choose sampling for the expected dynamics. The detector bandwidth and temporal bin or frame interval must resolve the decorrelation. Acquire data long enough to obtain stable averages. There is no universal frame rate or duration; both depend on the sample and instrument.
- Calculate the autocorrelation. Correlate intensity samples separated by each delay τ, normalize by the squared mean intensity, and use only valid sample pairs. An autocorrelator or software can perform this calculation; photon-counting implementations can calculate g2 from counts.
- Fit an appropriate model. Select a model based on the expected motion and optical transport rather than assuming every curve has the same decay form. Report the fit model and uncertainty alongside the resulting timescale or other fitted parameter.
Choose a detector and sampling strategy
Single-channel detection
A single detector measures one speckle signal over time. Correlation is then estimated by time averaging, which is most defensible when the sample is sufficiently stationary over the acquisition. The detector must have adequate bandwidth for the fluctuations, and photon statistics and noise affect the precision.
Camera-based multispeckle detection
A camera captures many spatial speckles, allowing correlation estimates to be averaged across pixels or regions. For the pixels to represent independent speckles, speckle size must be considered relative to pixel size: a pixel that collects several speckles can reduce the quality of independent sampling.
In a 2020 multispeckle diffuse correlation spectroscopy experiment, the authors calibrated speckle diameter as d = λz/D, where λ is wavelength, z is the distance from the fiber to the camera, and D is the fiber-core diameter. They adjusted speckle diameter to the pixel size to improve independent sampling and correlation signal-to-noise. Their apparatus used a 785-nm continuous-wave laser, optical fibers, and a SPAD camera; this is an example, not a universal equipment prescription. See the 2020 study.

Relate intensity correlation to field dynamics carefully
When the scattered field has appropriate Gaussian statistics, the Siegert relation connects the measured intensity correlation to the field correlation:
g2(τ) = 1 + β|g1(τ)|²
g1(τ) is the normalized field correlation, and β depends on coherence and detection geometry. The relation is not automatic: non-Gaussian field statistics can invalidate it. Check that the assumptions fit the measurement before using g2 to infer field dynamics.
Interpret the decay in context
A fast decay indicates that the measured speckle pattern loses correlation over a short delay; a slower decay indicates more persistent correlation. That observation alone does not identify a unique material property. The decay shape and timescale depend on the scatterer motion, optical properties, and source–detector geometry.

When to use diffusing-wave spectroscopy
For strong multiple scattering, diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS) analyzes intensity autocorrelation using a diffusive description of light transport. The measured response reflects many scattering paths, so interpretation depends on the transport model and measurement geometry, not just the delay curve. The foundational 1988 report notes, “The dependence on geometry provides an important experimental control over the time scale probed.” See the original Diffusing wave spectroscopy report and the later treatment of multiple scattering in correlated random media.
Make results comparable and troubleshoot weak correlations
A correlation curve is difficult to reproduce or compare without its acquisition and analysis context. Report the illumination wavelength, transmission or backscatter geometry, source–detector arrangement, detector type and bandwidth, temporal sampling, acquisition duration, averaging method, fit form, and uncertainty.
- Curve decays too quickly to resolve: increase temporal resolution or use a detector with suitable bandwidth, while checking that the signal is not being averaged over the decorrelation.
- Correlation estimates are noisy: consider photon count, detector noise, acquisition duration, and—when using a camera—whether pixels sample sufficiently independent speckles.
- Different geometries give different timescales: treat geometry as part of the measurement definition. In DWS, path-length distribution and source–detector arrangement affect the response.
- A familiar fit does not describe the data: reconsider the assumed motion regime, field statistics, and transport model rather than forcing a ballistic or diffusive form.
- Time and spatial averages disagree: assess whether the sample is stationary and whether the averaging method is justified; stationarity and ergodicity affect which average is defensible.
A 2021 treatment discusses temporal sampling and speckle-ensemble methods in DWS, including how these approaches relate to measurement design: Diffusing wave spectroscopy: a unified treatment on temporal sampling and speckle ensemble methods.
