For longer battery life, turn on Airplane Mode when you do not need wireless connectivity. For easier reading, adjust brightness, text size and spacing to suit your surroundings and preferences. The available controls and their menu paths vary by Kindle model and generation, so use the instructions for your specific device.
Find your Kindle model first
Amazon provides separate user guides for different Kindle models and generations. Check Settings or Device Info to identify your Kindle, then use the matching guide if a menu label below is missing or different. The official Kindle guide index lists model-specific documentation.

The steps below give the documented paths for the Paperwhite 12th Generation, released in 2024, where applicable. They should not be assumed to match every Kindle.
Reduce unnecessary wireless use
Turn on Airplane Mode when you are offline
- On a Paperwhite 12th Generation, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Actions.
- Tap Airplane Mode.
Amazon notes that a weak wireless signal can increase power consumption. Airplane Mode disables wireless connectivity and, on the Paperwhite 12th Generation, Bluetooth as well. Use it when you do not need syncing, downloads or Bluetooth; pending downloads and updates that require wireless wait until connectivity is restored. Amazon does not specify a guaranteed battery-life gain for this setting. See the Paperwhite 12th Generation user guide for its model-specific instructions.

Set brightness and warmth for your reading conditions
Adjust the screen light
On the Paperwhite 12th Generation, open Quick Actions by swiping down from the top, or go to All Settings > Screen and brightness > Brightness and Warmth. Set brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your current lighting. This is a practical way to avoid using more light than you need, not a measured Amazon battery-saving claim.
Use warmth if your model offers it
On supported models, the warmth control changes the display’s color tone. The Paperwhite 12th Generation also offers a schedule: choose Automatic to follow sunset and sunrise, or Manual to set times yourself. Warmth controls and scheduling are model-dependent; the Paperwhite guide documents the Paperwhite 12th Generation options.

Try dark mode as a display preference
On models that support it, dark mode inverts the display colors. Choose it if you prefer that presentation; it is not a universal battery-life or eye-health improvement. Check your model’s guide for availability and the exact control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake the text and page layout easier to read
While reading, tap the top of the screen and open Page Display or Font & Page Settings. Depending on your Kindle, you can adjust font, size, boldness, line spacing, margins and orientation. Change the settings that address your own reading needs rather than relying on one supposedly ideal combination. Menu names can differ on older devices; consult the guide for your Kindle model.

Choose how often the page refreshes
On the Paperwhite 12th Generation, go to Quick Actions > All Settings > Reading Options > Page Refresh. Kindle’s default behavior minimizes refreshes; turn on page refresh if you prefer the display to refresh on every page turn. Amazon’s guide does not quantify a battery trade-off for this preference, so choose based on how you want pages to appear rather than an assumed battery saving. The Paperwhite guide covers this control.

Features and menu paths are not identical across generations. Amazon’s guide index lists, among others, the Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024), Kindle 11th Generation (2024) and Oasis 11th Generation. The Paperwhite and Oasis guides document warmth controls, while the 2024 basic Kindle guide documents brightness and page refresh without showing the same night-brightness reduction option described in the Oasis guide. Check the guide for your exact device before following a path verbatim.

| Model or guide | Documented display controls | Model-specific note |
|---|---|---|
| Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024) | Brightness, warmth and scheduled warmth; page refresh and text settings | Quick Actions includes brightness, warmth and Airplane Mode. Airplane Mode also disables Bluetooth. |
| Kindle 11th Generation (2024) | Brightness and page refresh | The guide does not show the same night-brightness reduction option found in the Oasis guide. |
| Oasis 11th Generation | Warmth controls and night-brightness reduction | Use its own guide for menu paths; Paperwhite paths may not match. |
These feature differences are documented in Amazon’s Kindle guide index and model guides. Amazon’s Paperwhite 12th Generation guide also describes the Kindle’s display as electronic paper; that does not establish a quantified battery benefit for any individual setting.
