For a focused reader with library borrowing, start with Kobo. If you want Libby, Kindle, and other reading apps on one e-paper device, consider BOOX. For color and detailed comics, a tablet may be the better fit. Before switching, check whether your library, store purchases, and file formats work with the device you’re considering.
Kindle alternatives at a glance
| Reader priority | Option to consider | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Focused, text-first reading | Kobo Clara BW or another current monochrome Kobo | A dedicated reader with Kobo’s store and, where supported, built-in OverDrive/Libby borrowing. Check local library availability. Kobo’s current U.S. e-reader catalog and NBC Select’s comparison describe the product line and borrowing option. |
| Several reading and library apps on e-paper | BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) | Android and Google Play let you install apps such as Libby and Kindle, but books may stay inside each app rather than joining one native library. BOOX’s product catalog and WIRED’s guide cover the model and its app flexibility. |
| Illustrated books or color annotations | Kobo Libra Colour | Color e-paper can show color content, though it does not necessarily provide the detail of a tablet for comics. WIRED reports a 7-inch screen, 300 ppi black-and-white and 150 ppi color resolution, 32 GB storage, and up to 40 days of battery life for the model it reviewed; these are the guide’s reported specifications, not independent measurements here. WIRED’s guide. |
| Detailed comics, broad app choice, or general-purpose use | Phone or tablet with compatible reading apps | More flexible software and color suit varied content, but a tablet is not the same focused, dedicated-reader experience. NBC Select and WIRED discuss the trade-offs. |
| Public-library borrowing | Check your library, country, and device together | OverDrive lists guides for Kobo, NOOK, PocketBook, and Tolino as well as Kindle, but the supported route varies. Its help page says Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only. OverDrive’s e-reader guidance. |
Which Kindle alternative fits your reading?
Choose Kobo for a straightforward dedicated reader
Kobo is the closest fit if you mainly read text-based ebooks and want a dedicated device rather than a general-purpose tablet. The Kobo Clara BW is a monochrome option to consider; Kobo’s current catalog shows its available readers, while NBC Select describes built-in OverDrive/Libby access for library borrowing. That access depends on your library and location, so confirm it before buying.
A dedicated reader keeps reading at the center of the experience. It is a simpler choice than installing and managing multiple apps, but it does not automatically make every store purchase portable. Check your current books and the Kobo store’s available formats and rights before you switch.
Choose BOOX if you want several apps on an e-paper screen
WIRED describes the BOOX Go 6 (Gen II) as a 6-inch, 300 ppi monochrome reader running Android 11, with 32 GB storage and Google Play access. Its author reports installing Libby. That makes it a plausible option if you want to use different reading services on e-paper rather than relying on a single built-in library.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
App access brings a trade-off: reading apps may keep their books and controls separate rather than presenting one unified native ebook library. WIRED reports that the Go 6 (Gen II) is not waterproof and does not state a battery-life figure for it. These details apply to this model as described in that guide, not to every BOOX reader.
Choose color e-paper for color book content, not maximum comic detail
The Kobo Libra Colour is a dedicated color e-reader to consider for illustrated books or color annotations. WIRED’s reviewed-model specifications are listed in the table above. Color e-paper is still a different display choice from a tablet: for comics and graphic novels where fine visual detail matters, a tablet may render pages more clearly.

Choose a phone or tablet for flexibility and detailed color
A phone or tablet can run compatible reading apps and display color content, making it suitable for people who read across several services or use their device for other tasks. The compromise is that it is a general-purpose screen, not a dedicated reader with a focused interface. Consider it especially for highly detailed comics, where display detail may matter more than a dedicated e-reader’s reading-focused design.
Check library access before you replace a Kindle
Library compatibility depends on your country, library system, and device. OverDrive’s e-reader help page, last updated 18 August 2026, lists setup guides for Kindle, Kobo, NOOK, PocketBook, and Tolino. It also notes that an unlisted reader may be able to receive borrowed ebooks through Adobe Digital Editions on a desktop. That is a possible transfer route, not a guarantee that every library lends every title to every device.

OverDrive states: “Note: Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only.” This is a geographic limitation on Kindle Books through OverDrive; it does not establish that every U.S. library offers the same catalog or that every listed device supports every local borrowing service. Check your library’s own device instructions and catalog before choosing a reader. OverDrive e-reader guidance.
Check your purchases and file formats before switching
A device that is not a Kindle does not automatically unlock every ebook store. Start with the books you already own, where you bought them, and whether they can be read on the new device. An ebook’s file extension alone does not prove that a store purchase can be transferred: licensed content may have digital-rights restrictions.

EPUB is widely used, and WIRED notes that Kindle can accept EPUB through Send to Kindle conversion. That does not mean every purchased EPUB is transferable or that another reader will open every store’s protected book. Check the retailer’s rules for your specific titles and distinguish DRM-free files from licensed purchases. WIRED’s guide to non-Kindle e-readers.

- Library location: Check your library’s device guidance and whether borrowing is available in your country.

- Screen: Pick monochrome for text-first reading, color e-paper for some illustrated content, or a tablet when detailed color matters most.
- Apps: Decide whether you want one dedicated reading environment or the flexibility—and app-by-app organization—of Android.
- Other uses: Consider whether you need a general-purpose device or a reader designed primarily for ebooks.
For current model availability, check the manufacturers’ catalogs rather than relying on old prices or stock listings: Kobo’s U.S. e-reader catalog and BOOX’s product catalog.
