Open a book, tap the top of the screen, then tap the Aa or Page Display icon to find them. The exact controls vary by Kindle model, so treat these as options to explore rather than a guaranteed checklist.
1. Adjust font size and boldness
In an open book, tap the top of the screen and select the Aa or Page Display icon. In the Font tab, choose from the fonts available on your device, increase or decrease the type size, and adjust boldness across five levels. You can also pinch the page to change font size.

Larger or bolder type may be easier to distinguish, while smaller type leaves more text on screen. Try a small adjustment at a time and read a few pages before deciding whether it suits you. In the same menu, open Layout to adjust line, paragraph, word, and character spacing. More open spacing can make it easier to follow lines, but it also reduces the amount of text visible on a page. Tighter spacing puts more text on screen, which some readers may prefer.

There is no universally better setting. Change one spacing control at a time so you can tell what effect it has on your reading.
3. Set margins and text alignment
The Layout tab also contains margin-size and text-alignment controls. Wider margins can make a page feel less crowded; narrower margins can fit more words across each line. Alignment changes how text sits between the margins, and you can also switch between portrait and landscape orientation.

These are page-layout preferences, not corrections to the book. If a change makes lines harder to follow or the page feel cramped, choose a different setting.

Themes and background color
Theme controls let you change the page background and save a combination of current Font, Layout, and More preferences. This can be useful if you want to switch between different reading setups without re-adjusting each option.

Dark Mode on compatible e-readers
On compatible black-and-white Kindle devices, Dark Mode inverts text, images, and page color across screens. Amazon documents access through Settings → Screen and brightness → Appearance or Color Style; Quick Actions may also provide the control. Availability depends on the model. See Amazon’s Dark Mode instructions.
If a PDF looks wrong or becomes difficult to read with Dark Mode or Page Color enabled, turn the feature off so the PDF renders in its original format.

5. Pick a reading-progress display
In the More tab of the reading display menu, select the progress-tracking option you prefer and choose whether to show the clock while reading. Progress information can give you a quick sense of your place; hiding it leaves the page less cluttered. Neither choice is objectively best.
Where to find brightness and warmth
Brightness is separate from the five reading-display settings above. Depending on the device, open Quick Actions or Settings and adjust the brightness scale. Some compatible Kindles also include brightness and warmth under Screen and brightness; warmth is not available on every model. Amazon’s screen-light guide lists the device-dependent controls.

Why a book may still look different
Even with the same settings, text can vary from book to book. Kindle’s Enhanced Typesetting can handle features such as kerning, ligatures, hyphenation, and line-height normalization as part of how a book is rendered. These are not additional reader controls, and their presence helps explain why the page appearance may not be identical across titles. Amazon describes these features in its Enhanced Typesetting documentation.
Kindle e-reader and app settings are not identical
This guide covers Kindle e-readers. Kindle reading apps have their own interfaces and platform-dependent options, including page color, dark-mode behavior, scrolling, margins, themes, Reading Ruler, and—in Android—Word Wise. Do not assume an app control or menu path applies to an e-reader, or that every app platform offers the same options. See Amazon’s guide to accessible reading options in Kindle apps.
Make changes on the Kindle you have
Start with the controls available in your open book’s Aa or Page Display menu, then keep the adjustments that suit your reading. If a listed option is missing, the device model may not support it. Amazon provides Kindle e-reader user and quick-start guides for model-specific instructions; changing settings does not require buying a new Kindle.
