Focus on three things first: your activity trend, resting heart rate, and sleep duration and routine. Heart-rate variability (HRV) can add personal context once you have a baseline. Treat calorie estimates, sleep-stage breakdowns, and branded recovery scores more cautiously: they are estimates, not universal grades or medical diagnoses.

Which fitness tracker numbers matter most?

A tracker is most useful for noticing change over time, not for producing a perfect daily score. Compare readings from the same device, worn in a similar way and on a consistent schedule. Different devices may use different sensors and algorithms, so their numbers are not necessarily interchangeable.

Metric What it can help you notice How to interpret it
Activity, such as steps or active minutes Whether your movement is increasing, decreasing, or staying similar Use it as a personal trend, not a precise count of all movement.
Resting heart rate Changes in your usual resting pattern Look at your own readings over time; devices may calculate the estimate differently.
Sleep duration and routine How long and regularly you sleep Useful for spotting patterns; stage breakdowns are estimates.
HRV Variation in the time between heartbeats Compare with your personal baseline and the device’s method, not someone else’s score.
Workout heart rate An estimate of effort during exercise Wrist readings can be affected by movement and sensor position.
Calories and proprietary recovery scores A broad, device-generated estimate or summary Avoid treating the figure as exact or as a complete instruction for eating or training.

Use activity counts to follow your own movement

Steps and activity minutes offer a convenient way to see whether your routine is changing. A weekly pattern—such as whether you are walking more consistently—usually tells you more than hitting one exact number on a particular day.

Step counts are not ground truth. A 2020 systematic review found that step-count validity varied among commercial devices and study conditions. That finding does not establish how every current model performs, and it is not a universal accuracy percentage. Keep the device and wearing habits consistent if you want to compare your own weeks. The 2020 systematic review of commercially available wearables also examined heart rate and energy expenditure.

Read resting heart rate as a personal trend

Resting heart rate (RHR) is a device-derived estimate of your heart rate while at rest, usually expressed in beats per minute. Garmin describes 60–100 beats per minute as a range in which the resting heart rate of normal adults can vary; some athletes may have lower readings, and individual physiology differs. This is broad context, not a personal target or a diagnosis. Garmin’s heart-rate explanation provides the manufacturer’s guidance.

Follow your own readings on the same device rather than comparing them directly with another person’s or another brand’s. Garmin says it commonly measures RHR during sleep. Apple’s November 2024 technical document describes deriving its estimate from a subset of background measurements during the least active parts of the day, excluding sleep-related periods. Those are platform-specific approaches, not evidence that all trackers calculate RHR identically. Apple’s November 2024 technical document explains its method.

Understand what workout heart rate can and cannot tell you

Heart rate during exercise can help you follow changes in effort, but a wrist sensor does not provide a guaranteed exact reading. Movement and the position or fit of the device can affect the signal. Garmin advises keeping the sensor steady against the wrist and suggests a compatible chest strap when heart-rate accuracy is critical. Check that an accessory works with your device and suits your activity before relying on it. Garmin’s sensor guidance is specific to its products.

A workout reading is better treated as an estimate to interpret alongside how the exercise feels and the pattern across sessions, rather than as a precise measure of effort in every moment.

Use HRV only with your own baseline

Heart-rate variability (HRV) is the variation in time between heartbeats. It is not a simple case of “higher is always better”: readings differ among people, and measurement protocols differ among devices. Track changes against your own usual range and use the same device’s interpretation rather than comparing raw figures across brands.

Garmin says its HRV status feature needs routine overnight wear for around three weeks to establish a baseline. That timing applies to Garmin’s feature, not every tracker. Garmin’s HRV status explanation describes its approach.

Prioritize sleep duration and regularity over stage scores

Sleep duration and a reasonably consistent schedule are easier to act on than a tracker’s breakdown of light, deep, or REM sleep. Compatible wearables may report sleep stages and overnight measures such as HRV and RHR, but availability varies by device. Garmin lists those statistics for compatible devices worn during sleep. Garmin’s sleep-statistics guidance explains which kinds of information its compatible devices may provide.

Stage labels are algorithmic estimates, not clinical sleep measurements. Use a persistent pattern as a reason to review sleep habits or seek appropriate advice if you are concerned—not as a diagnosis based on a single night or score.

Keep calorie and recovery scores in perspective

Calories burned are modeled estimates, not direct measurements of all the energy you expend. The 2020 systematic review assessed energy-expenditure measures alongside steps and heart rate and found that performance varied by metric. It does not support treating a tracker’s calorie total as exact. Use it, at most, as a rough signal within the same device’s system rather than a precise instruction for what to eat or burn.

“Readiness,” “recovery,” and similar branded scores also depend on the manufacturer’s chosen inputs and calculation. They can be personal context, but they are not universal grades that establish exactly how you should train. Garmin says its wearable information is intended as a close estimate and may not be precisely accurate; the company also says its devices are not medical devices and their data are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. That is Garmin’s disclaimer, not a statement about every manufacturer’s wording. Garmin’s activity-tracking disclaimer states its limits and describes wearables as tools intended to encourage an active, healthy lifestyle.

A practical way to review your tracker

  1. Choose a small set. Start with activity, resting heart rate, and sleep duration or routine; add HRV if your device supports it and you can establish a personal baseline.
  2. Keep comparisons consistent. Use the same device and similar wearing habits. Avoid treating another person’s reading or another brand’s score as directly comparable.
  3. Look for patterns, not isolated alerts. A repeated change may be worth reflecting on; one unusual reading may be measurement noise or an ordinary fluctuation.
  4. Use scores to prompt questions, not diagnoses. Trackers can support awareness and behavior, but they cannot determine on their own whether you have a health condition.
