Neither the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite nor the Kobo Clara BW is a proven universal winner for ease of use. Their interface layouts are described as broadly similar; the bigger difference is how you get books onto the device. Choose the Clara BW if built-in Libby borrowing is supported where you live or you keep ebooks in varied file formats. Choose the Paperwhite if you already buy from Amazon’s Kindle Store or want its larger 7-inch screen. That is a feature-based recommendation, not the result of a controlled usability test.
Which models are being compared?
This comparison is between Amazon’s 2024 Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) and Rakuten Kobo Clara BW, a 6-inch black-and-white e-reader. It does not cover the 2021 11th-generation Paperwhite, Kobo Clara Colour, or the earlier Clara 2E. Amazon lists the Paperwhite’s screen as 7 inches in its 2024 launch announcement; Kobo’s product page describes the Clara BW and its features at Kobo’s US product listing.

Which is easier for buying and reading books?
Kindle Paperwhite: simplest if you use Amazon
The Paperwhite is the natural fit if your books are already in Amazon’s Kindle Store or you use Kindle Unlimited. Keeping purchases and reading within one store ecosystem can mean less work than moving an existing library elsewhere. Kindle Unlimited availability and terms depend on the market; check the offer for your country before subscribing. Amazon’s Kindle information is at Amazon’s Kindle page.
Kobo Clara BW: simplest if you use Kobo
The Clara BW connects to the Kobo Store and Kobo Plus, with Kobo Plus offered only in select countries. If your books and subscriptions are already there, it may be easiest to stay in that ecosystem. Check local availability and current terms before deciding.

- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.

Which handles library borrowing more easily?
The Clara BW has built-in Libby compatibility in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, according to Kobo’s Libby information. This is not a guarantee that every library in those countries participates or has the book you want. Confirm that your country and library are supported before choosing a device for borrowing.
If your library or country is not supported for Kobo’s built-in integration, do not assume the same workflow will be available. Library eligibility and catalog availability depend on the reader’s location and library.

Which is easier for ebooks you already own?
Kobo lists native support for EPUB, EPUB3, FlePub, PDF, MOBI, image formats, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR on the Clara BW product page. That breadth can make it a more straightforward choice if you already have books from different sources, particularly EPUB files or comics in CBZ and CBR formats. Kindle has its own Amazon delivery ecosystem, but do not assume it natively accepts every format Kobo lists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich screen is more comfortable?
The Paperwhite’s 7-inch display gives more screen area; the Clara BW’s 6-inch screen makes it the more compact option. Kobo specifies ComfortLight PRO, with adjustable brightness and color temperature, while Amazon lists adjustable warm light for the Paperwhite. Both manufacturers list dark mode. Font size and other reading adjustments can matter as much as screen size: Kobo lists adjustable font size, margins, and styles. Which device feels better depends on your eyesight, preferred text size, and hand comfort; no comparative user test establishes a winner.

What do the specifications say about battery, water resistance, and accessibility?
| Feature | Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) | Kobo Clara BW |
|---|---|---|
| Battery claim | Up to 12 weeks, according to Amazon’s current device guide; this is a manufacturer estimate, not a direct comparison. | Up to 53 days, according to Kobo, based on 30 minutes of reading daily, front light at 10%, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. |
| Water resistance | IPX8 rating; Amazon’s device guide does not give the same duration and depth detail as Kobo. | IPX8; Kobo specifies up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water. |
| Storage | 16GB, according to Amazon’s device guide. | 16GB, according to Kobo’s product page. |
| Accessibility and reading features | Amazon lists VoiceView screen reading over Bluetooth, dark mode, and adjustable warm light. | Kobo lists dark mode and adjustable font size, margins, and styles. |
The different battery estimates use different conditions, so they are not a like-for-like endurance comparison. Feature lists also do not establish that one device is categorically more accessible: consider the specific assistive workflow you need. Amazon’s device specifications are in its Kindle device guide; Kobo’s are on its Clara BW product page.
How to choose between them
- Start with your bookstore. If you buy from Amazon, the Paperwhite is likely the simpler fit; if you use Kobo, the Clara BW may be.
- Check library compatibility. For built-in Libby on Kobo, verify that your country and specific library participate.
- List your existing file types. If your library includes EPUB, EPUB3, CBZ, or CBR files, the Clara BW’s stated native support may reduce transfer friction.
- Decide whether screen size or compactness matters more. Compare the 7-inch Paperwhite with the 6-inch Clara BW against your preferred font size and how you hold a reader.
- Check regional price and availability. Current local prices and stock vary, and no current like-for-like price comparison is established here.
Is one objectively easier to use?
No. A 2025 secondary comparison describes the two interfaces as broadly similar, but there is no controlled head-to-head usability test or reader survey establishing a universal ease-of-use winner. Practical simplicity is more likely to come from matching the device to your bookstore, library access, and existing files. Amazon also claimed 25% faster page turns than the prior Paperwhite generation in its 2024 announcement; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent speed test.
