To set up a new Kindle, choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, and register it to your Amazon account, either on the device or through the Kindle app’s Simple Setup. To customize reading, open a book and use the Aa menu for its text and layout; adjust device-level light and appearance separately in Quick Actions or Settings. Menu names and available controls vary by model and generation.
What to have ready
- Your Kindle and the accessories included with it.
- An Amazon account and its sign-in details.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
Amazon’s setup guide is specifically for the Kindle (2026 release), Amazon Kids Kindle (2026 release), and Kindle (Aluminum – 2026 release). Other models may have different on-screen steps; Amazon lists separate entries in its Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides. Amazon’s instruction for the covered models is: “Turn on your Kindle E-Reader and follow the on-screen instructions to set it up.”

Set up the Kindle and register it
Choose one of the two routes below. Both lead to connecting the Kindle to Wi-Fi and registering it to your Amazon account.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | What you need | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| On the Kindle | The Kindle, Amazon account login details, and Wi-Fi network name and password. | Complete the setup prompts on the e-reader. |
| With a phone | The Kindle app on iOS or Android. On Android, Amazon’s documented instructions also call for Bluetooth and Location Services. | Use Simple Setup in the app; it may use the Amazon account and Wi-Fi passwords already saved on the phone. |
Set up on the Kindle
- Press the Kindle’s power button to turn it on.
- Select your language when prompted.
- Choose to set up on the Kindle itself.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to register the Kindle to your Amazon account.
Use phone-assisted Simple Setup
- Open the Kindle app on your iOS or Android phone and enable Amazon Device Simple Setup in the app.
- On Android, turn on Bluetooth and Location Services as directed by Amazon.
- On the Kindle, choose the option to set up with a phone, then follow the prompts to connect and register.
Simple Setup is an alternative, not a requirement. If it does not detect the account or network information saved on your phone, use the device setup prompts and enter the account and Wi-Fi details yourself. See Amazon’s How to Set Up Your Kindle (2026 release) for the covered releases.

Charging the 2026 release
For the Kindle (2026 release), Amazon says the device has a USB-C power port. Its guide says an Amazon USB-C charger is sold separately, or a USB-C charger rated at 5V/1A or higher can be used. This charger guidance is specific to the release covered by that setup article.
Change a book’s text and page layout
Book-reading preferences are adjusted from inside the book, not from the device’s general appearance menu. Amazon documents these text-display controls for Kindle e-readers from the 6th generation onward; the available settings still vary by model.

Font and size
In the Font tab, select an available font and adjust its size and boldness. A publisher’s font appears as an option when the publisher has embedded it in the book.
Spacing, margins, and orientation
In the Layout tab, adjust line, paragraph, word, and character spacing, along with margins, page orientation, and alignment. These controls are useful when text feels crowded or the page width does not suit your reading preference.

Amazon’s instructions are in Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display; they do not prescribe one font, size, or layout as best for everyone.

Turn Dark Mode on or off
On a compatible Kindle, open Settings, choose Screen and brightness, then select Appearance or Color Style and choose the mode you want. Some models also provide a Dark Mode control in Quick Actions. The exact label and availability depend on the device; Amazon’s Use Your Kindle E-Reader in Dark Mode page describes the supported controls.
If a PDF is difficult to read with Dark Mode or Page Color enabled, turn the feature off to view the PDF in its original format.
Change device-level text size on supported models
Kindle e-readers from the 11th Generation onward, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft have a device-level font-size setting documented by Amazon. The path is Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size. This is not a universal setting on older Kindles. For an ebook, the Aa reading toolbar—or pinching the page while reading—offers another way to change text size. See Amazon’s Enlarge the Font Size on Your Kindle E-Reader for the documented model scope.
