For a live clock, weather panel, or changing dashboard, an old tablet is the better choice—provided its settings and software can keep the screen you need visible. For a single static note or image, a Kindle Paperwhite has the advantage of E Ink’s low-power image retention. A Paperwhite normally sleeps and shows a screen saver, so it is not a straightforward always-on live dashboard.
Choose based on whether the display needs to change
The key difference is not simply e-reader versus tablet: it is static content versus content that must refresh. E Ink describes its ePaper as reflective and bistable: “No power is needed to hold an image,” while power is used when the content changes. That makes E Ink well suited to retaining a fixed image, but it does not make a Paperwhite an actively updating display. E Ink’s explanation of the technology describes the general display mechanism, not a measured comparison between a particular Paperwhite and tablet.

An official guide for an earlier Kindle Paperwhite generation says the device enters sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity and displays a screen saver; it also describes the static screen saver as not consuming battery power. Because the guide covers an earlier generation, do not assume every detail applies identically to every Paperwhite model. The practical distinction remains: retaining a static image is different from keeping a dashboard awake and refreshing. Kindle Paperwhite guide.

A tablet is the stronger candidate when the desk display needs to show changing information—such as a clock, weather, calendar, or dashboard—and the device can keep that view available. “Old tablet” can mean many different models and software versions, so check the actual device and app rather than assuming it has an always-on mode.

iPad: adjust Auto-Lock or use an app that stays active
Apple documents settings for changing how long an iPad waits before Auto-Lock and for preventing it from locking while in use. Some apps can also prevent automatic locking while active. Apple warns that “Delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption,” so a configuration that keeps a display visible may use more power than ordinary idle use. Exact options can vary by iPad and software. See Apple’s instructions for keeping the iPad display on longer.
Pixel Tablet: a charging screen saver can show a clock
Google documents a screen saver for a locked, charging Pixel Tablet, including traditional or dynamic full-screen clock styles. Some options require Android 15 or later, and the feature is a Pixel Tablet example—not a guarantee for other Android tablets. Google also documents a Home Controls screen saver for supported devices running Android 15 or later while locked and charging. Check the tablet’s own screen-saver settings and charging behavior before relying on it as a desk display. When a Paperwhite makes sense
Choose the Paperwhite if the display can remain unchanged—for example, a fixed note or image—and you value E Ink’s ability to retain an image without continuous power to hold it. It is an e-reader, not a general-purpose live dashboard. Amazon’s 2026 announcement gives the new Paperwhite “up to 12 weeks” of battery life under its stated reading-oriented product conditions; that manufacturer claim is not a desk-display runtime estimate and does not establish live-refresh capability. | Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the content need to update? | A changing clock, weather view, or dashboard needs a device and app capable of refreshing. A fixed note or image can benefit from E Ink’s static-image retention. |
| Can the device keep the intended view visible? | Check the tablet’s Auto-Lock or screen-saver settings and whether the app stays active. A Paperwhite’s normal sleep behavior makes it a poor fit for an ordinary continuously updating dashboard. |
| What happens when it is plugged in or left running? | Keeping a tablet display active can increase power use; Apple specifically cautions that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may do so. No head-to-head power measurement establishes a runtime comparison for these devices as desk displays. |
| Can you read it from your desk? | Judge legibility in the room’s lighting and from the distance where you will use it. This is a practical check, not a sourced comparative test finding. |
| Is the older tablet in suitable condition? | Check its screen and battery before depending on it for a display. The result depends on the specific device; no general condition or performance claim applies to all old tablets. |
A stand may help position an existing tablet at a useful angle, but it is an optional positioning accessory, not a requirement established for every setup.
