Choose the Kindle Paperwhite if you mainly read text and prefer Amazon’s longer stated battery-life estimate. Both current models have 7-inch displays and are described by Amazon as waterproof, so screen size and water resistance do not decide this comparison.
How the displays differ
Kindle Colorsoft: color for illustrated reading
Amazon describes Colorsoft as a 7-inch color-display Kindle. Color can help distinguish material in comics and graphic novels, and make images, covers, travel guides, and cookbooks more useful to browse. It also supports color highlights. Consider whether color would change how you read or navigate your books; for a library made up mostly of prose, it may not add enough to matter.

Amazon’s Colorsoft product announcement and its article about reading manga and exploring maps describe these color-oriented uses.
Kindle Paperwhite: monochrome for text
The Paperwhite has a 7-inch monochrome display in Amazon’s current lineup description. It suits readers who primarily want to read text and do not need color in covers, illustrations, or highlights. The Colorsoft and Paperwhite cited here have the same stated display size, so Colorsoft is not the larger-screen option.
#1 Best Overall
- Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
- A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
- Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
- Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Battery life: compare manufacturer estimates, not test results
Amazon lists Colorsoft at up to eight weeks of battery life and Paperwhite at up to three months. These are manufacturer maximum estimates, not independent head-to-head measurements or a promise of how long either device will last for a particular reader. The available evidence does not establish real-world battery duration under matching settings and reading habits.
Amazon’s Kindle-family lineup article gives the Paperwhite estimate; its Colorsoft announcement gives the Colorsoft estimate. If battery life is a priority, the stated maximum favors Paperwhite.

Shared features and configurations
Amazon describes both devices as waterproof, so water resistance alone is not a reason to choose one over the other based on these sources. Both product families include a Signature Edition configuration: Amazon lists 32GB Signature Edition devices and describes wireless charging. Its Colorsoft Signature Edition announcement also lists USB-C charging and an auto-adjusting front light; the lineup article describes an auto-adjusting front light for Paperwhite Signature Edition.

- You want colored highlights or color covers while browsing your library.

Check live pricing before buying
Amazon announced the Colorsoft Signature Edition in October 2024 with a launch price of $279.99. That is historical launch pricing, not a verified current price. Current prices, stock, and regional configurations are not established here; compare the live listings available in your region before making a purchase.
Amazon also said in its 2024 announcement that the Paperwhite offered page turns 25% faster than its predecessor. That comparison is against an earlier Paperwhite generation, not a measured speed comparison between Paperwhite and Colorsoft, so it should not be used to decide which of these two is faster.
