Why Noise-Cancelling Headphones Can Make Kids’ Audio Safer—and When They Don’t

Noise-cancelling headphones may help children listen at a safer level by reducing background noise that might otherwise prompt them to turn up their audio. But noise cancellation is not a volume limiter, and ordinary headphones are not a substitute for hearing protection at loud events. Playback volume and listening time still matter.

How noise cancellation can help—and what it cannot do

There are two different sounds to consider: the child’s media and the noise around them. Passive attenuation comes from the earcups and their fit blocking some outside sound. Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses electronics to reduce surrounding noise. By making a noisy setting less intrusive, ANC may reduce the temptation to raise the media volume just to hear it. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that this can be useful when background noise might lead children to turn up playback; the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones to reduce that need in noisy situations (WHO safe-listening guidance).

Neither passive attenuation nor ANC necessarily limits the audio signal reaching the ears. A child can still play music, games, or videos too loudly for too long. ANC also does not make a pair of headphones a certified hearing protector. Keep the playback level controlled even when the outside world sounds quieter.

Hearing risk depends on loudness and time

Sound exposure is not a volume-only question: how long a child listens matters along with how loud the sound is. WHO and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) describe a child listening mode of 75 dB for 40 hours per week in their 2019 safe-listening standard. That is an exposure framework for a listening mode, not evidence that any particular headphones enforce 75 dB or make every listening pattern safe (WHO-ITU standard).

WHO also gives practical device advice to keep volume at no more than 60% of maximum and, when using a monitoring app, to stay below an 80 dB average. A slider percentage is not a decibel measurement: the same percentage can produce different sound levels on different devices, headphones, and content. Treat these recommendations as guidance, not as a guarantee of a safe output level.

Why an “85 dB limit” label may not be enough

The AAP’s 2023 policy statement warns that many manufacturers claim an 85 dB limit, but the claim is not reliably true; some headphones can produce hazardous output. The statement does not establish what any one model delivers, so a label alone is not proof that a child’s ears are protected (AAP policy statement).

If you are choosing a pair advertised as volume-limiting, check how its limit works rather than relying on the package. Look for whether a parent can set and lock the limit, whether it remains in force in both wired and Bluetooth modes, and whether it applies across the devices the child uses. A setting that is easy to bypass, or that works only in one connection mode, may not control playback in the child’s usual setup. Do not infer a particular model’s output from a product description alone.

What to do in different settings

Noisy travel and everyday background noise

On a plane, bus, or in another noisy place, ANC may reduce the urge to raise playback to hear over the surroundings. Keep the content volume modest and make sure the child can still notice important speech and safety cues when needed. Noise cancellation can reduce competing sound; it does not make loud playback harmless.

Sensory discomfort and schoolwork

The AAP says children with sensory processing difficulties may benefit from noise-cancelling headphones or hearing-protection earmuffs that reduce harmful loud noise without completely concealing other ambient sound. Responses vary, so watch whether a child is comfortable and able to take part in the activity. Noise reduction may help some students, including some children with learning disabilities, but the AAP notes that not all students benefit in reading comprehension. Monitor the child’s actual experience rather than assuming headphones will improve focus or learning for everyone.

Concerts, fireworks, sports, and other loud events

For loud events, reduce exposure: move farther from the sound, take breaks in a quieter place, or leave when practical. If hearing protection is needed, use protection designed for that purpose. Headphones used to listen to media—even noise-cancelling ones—should not be treated as protective earmuffs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also advises taking steps to prevent loud-noise exposure (CDC hearing-loss prevention).

A caregiver checklist for safer listening

  • Use the device’s parental volume or safe-listening controls when available, and check the settings on the device the child actually uses.
  • Keep playback at a modest level; do not rely on ANC or a percentage-of-slider setting as a sound-level cap.
  • Build in quiet breaks and pay attention to listening duration as well as loudness.
  • Check that headphones fit comfortably and that the child can hear when spoken to, as AAP family guidance recommends.
  • For advertised limits, verify how they behave across wired and Bluetooth connections and whether a child can change or bypass them.
  • For a loud venue, choose distance, breaks, or hearing protection designed for the environment instead of relying on media headphones.

If you are concerned about a child’s hearing, speech or language development, persistent ringing, or difficulty hearing, ask a qualified clinician or audiologist about an evaluation. Headphone use alone is not enough to diagnose a hearing problem; CDC provides guidance on when to seek help (CDC hearing-loss information).
