Check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode, sync the app or e-reader, and look for the title in the library’s All view. These steps address common access and delivery problems without risking account settings or downloaded content.
Start by identifying what is failing
The right fix depends on where the problem occurs. A missing title points toward library visibility, account ownership, or delivery. A title that appears but will not download calls for connection and sync checks. If the book has downloaded but fails when tapped, the cited Amazon troubleshooting steps do not identify a cause for every possible error; note the exact message and device or app you are using.

- Kindle e-reader: Check the device’s library and whether the title is downloaded.
- Kindle app on a phone or tablet: Check the Library view, filters, and app sync.
- Kindle app on Windows: Check whether you are using the Legacy app; Amazon says it is no longer supported as of June 30, 2026.
Check the connection and sync
Amazon says a working internet connection is required to purchase, download, or sync books. Confirm that Wi-Fi is connected and Airplane mode is off, then sync the app or e-reader. Amazon’s content troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
- Kindle app: Open More and choose Sync or Sync Now, depending on the app version.
- Kindle e-reader: Choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items, depending on the model and software.
Look for a hidden title or resend it
In the Kindle app, open Library, select All, clear any active filters, refresh, and search for the book. Amazon notes that library filters can make content appear hidden. The available labels can differ by app version.

If the title still does not appear on the device, open Manage Your Content and Devices and check whether the book is listed. If it is, use the content manager’s delivery controls to send it to the device you want, then sync again.
Check the order if the title is missing from your account
If the book is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices, check Your Orders under Digital Orders and confirm that the transaction is complete. Amazon says an incomplete order may offer Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method. This check is for a purchase that is missing from the account’s content list; it is not a general explanation for every book-opening failure. Restart an e-reader if the problem persists
If an e-reader is behaving intermittently, restarting it is a reasonable next step after checking connection and delivery. Amazon recommends a restart for issues such as a frozen screen or slow performance. Its restart instructions say to press and hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank, keep holding for 40 seconds, then release it and let the device reboot. Button behavior and menus can vary by model; consult the help page for your Kindle if those steps do not match.

These steps have consequences beyond refreshing a book download, so do not use them as first-line fixes.

Deregistering
Deregistering temporarily removes access to the account, purchased content, and Amazon services until the Kindle is registered again. Consider it only after simpler checks, and follow Amazon’s device-specific deregistration guidance.
Factory reset
A factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and it deregisters the Kindle. Before considering one, confirm that important content and reading data are synced. Follow Amazon’s model-specific reset directions.

If you use Kindle on Windows
Amazon’s Windows help page says the Legacy Kindle app, previously called Kindle for PC, has been unsupported since June 30, 2026. If you are still using it, consult Amazon’s current Kindle app installation and update guidance. App labels and availability may change, so use the current instructions for your Windows version.

When these steps do not fix it
If a book is present and downloaded but still fails when opened, record the device or app, the exact error, and whether other books open. The Amazon guidance linked above covers missing content, delivery, and device reset steps; it does not establish a single cause for every error shown when a reader taps a book. For unresolved account, payment, or device problems, contact Amazon support with those details.
