When the keyboard “doesn’t work” in Chrome, the fix depends on which keys fail and where. Typing text, moving with navigation keys such as Tab and the arrows, and using shortcuts such as Ctrl+C (Windows, Linux) or Cmd+C (macOS) are three different failures, and each has different likely causes. Work through the checks below in order and stop as soon as the problem clears. The earliest checks cost nothing and rule out the most common causes; the last ones change settings and should wait.
Seven checks, least disruptive first
1. Pin down the failure
Before changing anything, answer two questions: which kind of input fails, and how widely does it fail?
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Input that fails | Typical signs | Where the cause usually lies |
|---|---|---|
| Typing text | Letters do not appear in the address bar, search box, or forms | The focused field, the keyboard layout, or a page that blocks input |
| Navigation keys | Tab does not move focus, arrows do not scroll, Enter does not submit a form | Page focus, extensions, or the keyboard connection |
| Shortcuts | Ctrl/Cmd+T, +C, or +V does nothing, or does something unexpected | Operating-system shortcut assignments, Chrome shortcut handling, extensions, or a web app that intercepts keys |
Then check scope:
- One field or one page only: Chrome as a whole is probably working. The problem is more likely the page or where the cursor sits.
- All Chrome pages, but other apps work: The fault is more likely inside the browser. Move on to checks 4 to 7.
- Every application fails: The cause is probably the keyboard, its connection, or the operating system. Chrome settings will not fix it.
The split between typing, navigation, and shortcuts matters because Chromium’s keyboard design documentation notes that shortcuts can be handled at several layers. Its wording:

#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
In practice, that means a shortcut can fail because the operating system, the browser, a web app, or an extension got to the key first. Chromium’s documentation is written for developers, not end users, so treat it as an explanation of why conflicts happen rather than a troubleshooting guide.
2. Check the page and the focus
Click directly inside the field you want to type in, then test a second field on the same page. Next, load a different site and type in its search box. Keyboard input depends on which element has focus, so a missing cursor in a field is a common reason keys appear dead.
If other fields and sites respond normally, a general keyboard or Chrome failure is unlikely. This is a practical inference from how focus works, not a finding from a keyboard-specific Google article.

3. Test the keyboard in another application
Open a plain text editor outside Chrome: Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on macOS (set to plain text with Format > Make Plain Text if needed). Type a few characters and press Tab and the arrow keys.
- Keys work in the editor: The keyboard is fine. Continue with Chrome-specific checks.
- Keys fail in the editor too: Stop here and look at the hardware and system. Reconnect a wired keyboard or replace the batteries of a wireless one. For a wireless keyboard, check that its USB receiver is seated in a working port. If the layout looks wrong, check the input method: on Windows, go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region; on macOS, go to System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources.
Failure everywhere is a diagnostic result, not a reason to replace the keyboard. Many such faults are cable, receiver, or layout problems.
4. Fully restart Chrome
Closing the last window is not always a full restart. Quit Chrome completely (Cmd+Q on macOS; on Windows, close every window and check the system tray for a lingering Chrome icon), then reopen it. Google’s general Chrome troubleshooting advice includes closing and reopening the browser, and a clean restart clears temporary input state that can hold a shortcut or field in a bad condition.

- Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
5. Isolate extensions
Open chrome://extensions, or go to the three-dot menu and select Extensions > Manage Extensions. Turn every extension off and test the keyboard again. If it works, turn extensions back on one at a time, testing after each, until the problem returns. The extension you enabled last is the likely cause.
Google’s general troubleshooting advice recommends this approach for connection and loading problems. Using it for keyboard faults is a reasonable isolation test, not a guaranteed fix. It is especially worth doing when the failure involves shortcuts, because extensions can intercept key events, as the Chromium documentation describes.
6. Update Chrome and restart
Open chrome://settings/help (Settings > About Chrome). Chrome checks for updates and shows the installed version. If an update is listed, install it and relaunch. Google recommends running the latest version. If the page reports that Chrome is already up to date and the problem remains, restart Chrome manually, as its general troubleshooting steps suggest. Note the version number shown here; you will need it if you report the problem later.

7. Try hardware acceleration and reset settings, only if needed
These are the most disruptive checks. Use them only after the earlier steps fail.
Hardware acceleration. Go to Settings > System and turn off “Use graphics acceleration when available,” then relaunch Chrome. Google documents this setting in its guidance on Chrome crashes and failure to open, not as a keyboard fix. The only keyboard-specific report we could find is a 2019 Chrome Help Community thread about a shortcut that behaved inconsistently in Chrome 73 on Windows 10. The replies in that thread are user experiences, not verified solutions. Do not expect this setting to repair a keyboard fault; test it, and turn it back on if it makes no difference.
Reset settings. Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Google’s help describes the effect as follows:
Best Value
- The Lenovo 300 USB keyboard offers an intuitive and comfortable island key design with 2 5 zone layout including separate number pad
- This full-size keyboard includes concaved key caps fitted for your fingertips
- Spill resistant keys with a board drain help keep your PC keyboard protected and keep you productive
- The complete ergonomic design includes an adjustable tilt to improve your typing comfort
- OS independent – This convenient computer keyboard works with laptops desktops and any computer with a USB port
- Bookmarks and saved passwords are not deleted or changed.
- Settings such as extensions and themes are reset, so extensions may be disabled and will need re-enabling.
- Fonts and accessibility settings are among the settings that stay as they are.
A reset is not the same as clearing browsing data. Before running it, write down the extensions you rely on so you can restore them quickly.

- Keys fail in other apps too: The problem is outside Chrome. Recheck the cable or receiver, the keyboard layout, and the operating system’s input settings, and try the keyboard on a different computer if one is available.
- Only Chrome fails, even after the reset: Report it through the Chrome Help Community with your Chrome version (from chrome://settings/help), operating system, the exact keys involved, and whether the failure is typing, navigation, or shortcuts. Include which sites or fields you tested, since scope is the detail that most often narrows a Chrome-specific fault.
What the official sources establish, and what they do not
Google’s published Chrome help pages support the general actions in this guide: restarting, isolating extensions, updating, turning off hardware acceleration, and resetting settings. Those pages address crashes, failure to open, connection and loading problems, and reset behavior. None of them provides a keyboard-specific diagnosis, so the order of steps here is a practical sequence built from that guidance, not a Google-endorsed seven-step keyboard fix.
No published figure shows how often keyboard faults in Chrome come from the browser rather than the hardware or operating system, so this guide does not estimate one. Menu labels and paths also change between Chrome versions and operating systems. If a label differs from the ones above, look for the same setting in the same section of Settings.
