You may be able to stop an Android phone from switching its hotspot off when idle, but there is no single setting that works on every phone. Apple says iPhone hotspot-connected devices disconnect automatically when the hotspot is not in use to save battery; its support instructions do not document a universal switch to disable that behavior. The right approach is to check the controls available on your model and distinguish an idle connection dropping from the hotspot itself becoming unavailable.
What “always on” can mean
A phone can stop advertising a hotspot, disconnect idle clients, or make the hotspot unavailable because of a carrier or device limit. These are different behaviors. Apple describes devices disconnecting when Personal Hotspot is not being used; Google says its Instant Hotspot turns off when no device is connected. Neither statement establishes a universal timer for every phone’s portable hotspot.

On Android, some manufacturers expose an automatic turn-off or timeout setting. Whether it exists, what it controls, and how long the hotspot remains available depend on the phone, carrier, and software version. No setting can guarantee that a phone will remain continuously discoverable in every circumstance.

Turn on Personal Hotspot and manage access
- Open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on the hotspot and manage access there. The Wi-Fi hotspot name matches the iPhone’s device name; you can set or change its Wi-Fi password.
Apple says that when the hotspot is not being used, connected devices automatically disconnect to save battery life. That describes client disconnection; Apple does not give a timer or document a universal setting that disables it. Connecting more often or keeping a client active may help maintain a useful connection, but it should not be treated as a documented always-on override. When a computer is the client
Apple says Personal Hotspot remains active while an iPhone or iPad is connected to a computer by USB. This can suit a computer that can stay physically tethered, but it is not a general override for wireless clients or all idle-disconnection behavior. Hotspot service requires a supporting wireless provider; fees may apply, and the number of connected devices depends on the carrier and model. If the setting is missing or unavailable
If Cellular Data is on but Set Up Personal Hotspot is missing, Apple advises contacting the carrier to ask whether Personal Hotspot can be added to the plan. Check carrier support and plan terms as well if the option is dimmed or service will not start.

Check Android’s automatic turn-off controls
Look in your phone’s hotspot settings
- Open Settings and search for Hotspot, Tethering, or Mobile Hotspot. Alternatively, open the network or connection settings and look for the hotspot or tethering menu.
- Look for a control such as Turn off automatically, Timeout, or Turn off when no devices are connected. Labels and locations vary.
- If your phone offers the control, turn automatic shutoff off or choose a longer timeout if available. This may keep that phone’s hotspot available longer; the result depends on the device’s implementation.
Android’s platform documentation includes a Soft AP shutdown-timeout setting, but that is an implementation detail, not evidence that every phone exposes a user-facing switch. Google also says Android Instant Hotspot turns off automatically when no device is connected. Instant Hotspot is a specific cross-device feature, not a description of every manufacturer’s portable hotspot behavior. Google’s Instant Hotspot guidance notes that steps and availability can differ by device and manufacturer; its described feature requires Android 11 or later, is unavailable on Android Go, and has newer-version functionality. The Android Open Source Project’s Soft AP documentation describes the platform timeout and notes that client capacity is bounded by hardware and carrier constraints.
If there is no timeout option
There may be no setting on your model to change idle shutdown. Do not assume that a menu path or timeout value shown for another Android phone applies to yours. Check your manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and software version; if hotspot service is missing, blocked, or limited, ask your carrier whether your plan supports it and what restrictions apply.

Separate connection convenience from keeping the hotspot on
Apple Instant Hotspot can make it easier for Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, or included in the same Family Sharing group, to connect. That convenience does not disable idle disconnection. Google documents Android cross-device sharing requirements involving accounts, cross-device services, and device versions; support varies by manufacturer. These features can simplify joining a hotspot, but they are not substitutes for a model-specific automatic-shutoff control.

When hotspot service will not stay available
- Hotspot is missing or unavailable: Confirm mobile or cellular data is enabled. On iPhone, contact the carrier if Personal Hotspot is not offered; on either platform, verify that the plan supports hotspot use.
- Hotspot stops after clients disconnect: Check whether your Android model provides an idle shutoff or timeout control. On iPhone, Apple documents automatic disconnection of idle devices but not a universal disable setting.
- New devices cannot join: Check the device and carrier’s client limits. Apple says the maximum connected-device count depends on carrier and model; Android platform documentation says hardware and carrier constraints bound the maximum supported clients.
- Charges or restrictions are unclear: Ask the carrier about plan terms and possible fees. Availability and limits cannot be inferred from the phone setting alone.
