In Word, go to Insert > Text > Date & Time, choose a format, and select Update automatically only if you want the date to change later. Leave it unchecked to insert a fixed date as text. You can also press Alt+Shift+D to insert a DATE field.
Choose whether the date should stay fixed or update
Word can insert the current date as plain text or as a field that updates automatically. The choice matters: fixed text preserves the date as entered, while a field can be refreshed to show a later date. An automatically updating field does not preserve the date the document was created.

| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed date (plain text) | Inserts the date as text; it does not change automatically. | You want the document to keep the date you entered, such as on a signed letter or completed record. |
| Updating date (field) | Inserts a field that can update to a later date. | You want the displayed date to change when the field is refreshed. |
These steps are documented for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, and Word 2019. The exact workflow for Word for the web and mobile apps is not established here.
Insert a fixed date
- Click where the date should appear.
- Open Insert > Text > Date & Time.
- Choose a date format, leave Update automatically unchecked, and select OK.
Word inserts the chosen date as text, so it stays as entered unless you edit it yourself.

- Click where the date should appear.
- Open Insert > Text > Date & Time.
- Choose a format, check Update automatically, and select OK.
Word inserts a date field rather than fixed text. Its displayed value can be refreshed later; it is not a record of when the document was originally created.
