Open source does not automatically make KeePass the winner. Choose KeePass if you want a local encrypted database and are willing to manage its syncing, backups, and any ports or add-ons. Choose LastPass if you prefer a hosted service that handles syncing for you, while accepting the trust and recovery considerations of an online account. The deciding question is who you want responsible for keeping your vault available and protected across devices.
How KeePass and LastPass store and sync your vault
KeePass centers on an encrypted database file that you store where you choose. That gives you control over the vault’s location, but does not by itself provide a managed cross-device sync arrangement. You must select a storage and backup method, ensure your devices can access the right copy, and deal with conflicts if more than one device changes the database. Third-party storage or plugins can be part of a sync setup, but they add decisions and components to manage. KeePass’s feature documentation describes the database and optional key-file approach; a 2026 comparison discusses user-managed sync paths.

LastPass provides a hosted workflow with built-in syncing, so users do not need to arrange their own vault-file synchronization. That convenience means relying on a service account and the provider’s systems. Consider which model better matches your habits: a local file you control and maintain, or a centrally managed vault available through the service.

KeePass: more control, more responsibility
KeePass is configurable, and the software’s feature documentation notes that ports exist for other systems. Exact compatibility depends on the edition or port you choose, so confirm that the specific version works on every computer or mobile device you intend to use. Add-ons and ports are separate components; check their provenance and suitability rather than assuming they have the same status as the core program.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Choose where the database lives and how copies are synchronized.
- Keep a separate, restorable backup and know which copy is current.
- If you use a key file, make it available wherever you need to open the database and protect it from loss.
A USB flash drive is optional: KeePass documents using a USB stick to carry a key file. It can also hold an offline copy, but it is not required, and it should not be your only backup. If a key file is required and you lose it, you may be unable to open the database.
LastPass: a managed service, with plan-dependent details
LastPass reduces the work of arranging vault synchronization by hosting the service. Feature access can depend on the plan, so check the current plan details before choosing it. The available information does not establish a complete current pricing or feature-limit comparison, and the exact device and browser combinations for KeePass vary by edition or port.

How to compare security without treating open source as a verdict
Open source makes code available for inspection; it does not, by itself, prove that a particular configuration, port, add-on, or day-to-day backup practice is secure. Conversely, a hosted service’s security claims do not establish that it is categorically safer. Compare how each protects the vault, the quality of the secret protecting it, the components you rely on, and the risks created by your own workflow.

KeePass’s official security documentation says KeePass 2.x supports AES-KDF and Argon2. A key-derivation work factor can raise the cost of guessing attacks, but also makes opening and saving the database slower. Choose a setting that remains practical on every device that must open the file, and use a strong master password. The algorithm name alone is not a complete measure of security. KeePass security documentation explains the trade-off.

KeePass also supports optional key files and combinations of a password and a key file. A key file can add a separate factor in your setup, but it creates a recovery dependency: keep it protected and available, and retain a safe backup of the database. Do not store the only usable copy of both items together if that would defeat the separation you intended.
LastPass incident history and current company statements
In a notice dated December 22, 2022, LastPass said an unauthorized party used information from an earlier August 2022 incident to access certain elements of customer information. The company asserted that customer passwords remained encrypted under its zero-knowledge model. That is LastPass’s account of the incident and its protection claim, not an independent finding. - FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
LastPass’s current security page describes security investments, access-control changes, audits, an IRAP assessment, certifications, infrastructure and vault changes, and a PBKDF2 setting of 600,000 iterations. These are the company’s statements; they are not an independent comparison proving LastPass safer than KeePass. Which one should you choose?
| Priority | Better fit | What you take on |
|---|---|---|
| You want to control where the encrypted vault file is kept | KeePass | You must arrange sync, backups, and access on each device. |
| You want built-in hosted synchronization | LastPass | You rely on the provider’s service, account recovery, and security practices. |
| You are comfortable checking editions, ports, and optional components | KeePass | You need to verify compatibility and trust the exact software you install. |
| You prefer a centrally maintained workflow over managing vault copies | LastPass | Available features may depend on the current plan. |
For KeePass, the practical test is whether you will actually keep a current backup and make the database—and any required key file—available on every device you use. For LastPass, decide whether the convenience of hosted sync outweighs your reliance on the service and its account-recovery arrangements. Either option can be undermined by a weak master secret, an inaccessible recovery path, or neglected updates and backups.
How to make the choice safely
- List your devices. For KeePass, identify the specific edition or port for each one and verify its current compatibility. Do not assume every port supports the same features.
- Plan recovery before moving passwords. With KeePass, test that a safe backup opens and decide how to protect and restore any key file. With LastPass, review the current account-recovery options.
- Choose a strong master secret. For KeePass, select a key-derivation setting that remains usable on all devices that open the database; stronger work factors can increase load and save time.
- Check current LastPass plan terms. Confirm the features and device access you need on the provider’s current plan information, since plan limits and prices can change.
LastPass also describes passwordless access using FIDO2-certified hardware keys on its comparison page. If that option matters to you, verify the current account and device requirements before buying a key. LastPass comparison information.
For KeePass, an optional USB drive can carry a key file or hold an offline database copy, but use a separate safe backup and do not make the drive the sole place your recovery materials exist. The choice is not whether open source wins in the abstract: it is whether you would rather manage the vault file yourself or rely on a hosted synchronization service.
