Choose KeePass if you want control of a locally managed password database and are comfortable arranging its storage, syncing, and backups. Choose LastPass if you prefer a hosted vault with integrated autofill and access across device types. Neither is automatically the safer choice: the trade-off is between managing your own database and relying on an account-based service, while your master password, devices, and recovery habits matter either way.
What is the practical difference?
| Factor | KeePass | LastPass |
|---|---|---|
| Vault model | An encrypted database file that you manage. | A hosted, account-based vault with access on trusted devices, according to LastPass. |
| Sync and backup | You choose where the database lives and how to access and back it up; KeePass 2.x can merge database copies. | Automatic device sync is advertised as part of the service. |
| Platform workflow | The core program is for Windows; ports for other systems are available and may be maintained separately. | LastPass describes browser access on computers and access from mobile device types. |
| Cost model | The official feature page describes KeePass as open source and lists no subscription price; storage or third-party apps may cost extra. | Free is limited to one device type; Premium provides access across device types. Verify current pricing and eligibility. |
These distinctions are based on the products’ official documentation: KeePass features, KeePass synchronization, and LastPass plans.

Which is more secure?
There is no supported, definitive independent security ranking between the two in the sources cited here. Their security models differ, and an algorithm name alone does not establish how safe an account or database will be in practice.
KeePass encryption and key setup
KeePass encrypts its complete database, including usernames, URLs, and notes, not just passwords. KeePass 2.x supports AES-256 and ChaCha20; KeePass 1.x supports AES and Twofish. The master key can combine a password with a key file, a Windows account key, or a plugin-provided key. KeePass also documents configurable key-derivation functions: increasing the work factor makes password guessing more costly but can make opening the database slower. See the KeePass security documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
LastPass security claims
LastPass says it uses device-level encryption and that users decrypt their data on trusted devices. Its security page reports that PBKDF2 iterations were increased to 600,000 and describes infrastructure, access-control, audit, and certification measures. These are company-published claims, not independent proof that risk has been eliminated. Details are on LastPass’s security page.
What neither model removes
Malware on an unlocked device, a weak or reused master password, unsafe recovery practices, and missing or untested backups can undermine either setup. Use a unique, strong master password, protect the devices where you unlock the vault, enable available multifactor authentication, and make sure you can recover access if a device is lost or a database copy is damaged.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
Does KeePass sync across devices?
Yes, KeePass 2.x includes a merge-based synchronization feature: it can combine changes from database copies and save the merged result to both locations. Its documentation describes local files, network files, and several URL-based approaches. For cloud storage, it recommends accessing the database through local filesystem integration where available.
This is not the same as a fully managed account sync service. You decide where to store the database, which clients can reach it, and how to make and restore backups. The feature is documented for KeePass 2.x; do not assume every KeePass edition or third-party app behaves identically. Read the synchronization guide before choosing a workflow.

Is LastPass Free limited to one device?
Yes. LastPass’s plan page describes Free as unlimited password storage but limits use to one device type: computers or mobile devices. Premium is described as providing access across all devices. LastPass names desktop and laptop browsers, phones, smart watches, and tablets among its device categories. Check the current plan page for the terms that apply to your country and account.
What do the plans and costs mean?
KeePass’s official features page describes it as open source and does not list a subscription price. That does not establish the total cost of every setup: you may pay separately for storage or for a third-party app on another platform.

- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
LastPass currently describes Free, Premium, and Families on its pricing page. Families is described as six Premium accounts with separate encrypted vaults. KeePass: core program plus ports
KeePass identifies Windows portability and lists ports for other systems, including Android and iOS. A mobile setup may therefore use a separately maintained app rather than the same official desktop application. Before relying on a particular port, check its developer, update history, and chosen database-sync method; features and maintenance are not automatically shared across clients.
LastPass: integrated access
LastPass advertises autofill and access across device types on Premium, with Free limited to one device type. Its plan page describes browsers on desktop and laptop devices and names phones, smart watches, and tablets. Confirm current compatibility for your specific operating system and browser instead of assuming support for a particular version.
Which one should you choose?
Choose KeePass if you want to manage the database yourself
- You want an open-source password database rather than relying on a hosted account as the center of your setup.
- You are willing to choose storage, coordinate clients, and maintain backups and a recovery plan.
- You value the ability to configure key derivation and, where useful, combine a master password with another key source.
Choose LastPass if you want a more integrated service
- You want the service to handle vault access and synchronization across devices.
- You prefer built-in autofill and do not want to assemble a storage and client workflow.
- You are willing to use an account-based service and check whether its current plan fits your device needs.
If you want a physical security key for multifactor authentication, first verify that your plan and the account you are protecting support the specific key. LastPass lists hardware MFA options such as YubiKey for Premium; a hardware key is optional, not a prerequisite for using either password manager.
