A reminder app does not need a provider-operated task server to be useful—but “local-first” does not always mean “no sync,” and no single design is best for everyone. If you want to limit what an app provider can receive, start by finding where your tasks are stored, how they move between devices, and how you will recover them if a device is lost.
What “zero servers” can—and cannot—mean
“Local-first” means the device is the primary place an app works with task data. It does not tell you whether the app offers optional sync or who operates that service. A local-only app, an app with end-to-end encrypted sync, and an app that syncs through infrastructure you control are different choices—not interchangeable versions of “no cloud.”

Local-only storage can reduce the opportunity for the app provider to receive task contents. It does not establish that the app is secure in every respect, nor does it protect against every risk on your device. Encryption and privacy claims should be treated as vendor or project descriptions unless supported by implementation details, a clear account of key custody, and relevant independent evidence.

Data minimisation is also a useful way to frame the decision. Regulation (EU) 2016/679, Article 5(1)(c), says personal data should be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed (‘data minimisation’);” The regulation sets out a general data-protection principle; it does not require reminder apps to be serverless.

Choose the storage and sync model that matches your routine
Local-only storage
With a local-only design, task data stays on the device rather than syncing to a provider’s task service. 2Do says it operates no hosted sync service and does not process or transmit task data through its own servers. PrimeTask describes its desktop app as local-only, with encrypted local databases. Those are vendor statements, not independent security assessments.
The practical trade-off is that you must plan for backup, device replacement, and access from other devices. If your only usable copy is on one device, losing access to that device can mean losing your tasks. Check whether the app supports export and how its backup and restore process works before relying on it.
Local-first with optional encrypted sync
Some apps work offline and let you enable sync when you want it. Everdo describes offline operation with optional end-to-end encrypted sync or local network sync. Haven describes local-first encrypted storage and optional sync, but says it does not yet have a native mobile app. For either product, confirm current platform and feature details directly; the cited product information does not establish a common independent assessment of their security claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEncryption can reduce what a sync provider can learn, but the label alone does not answer who controls the keys, what data is encrypted, or how account recovery works. Look for those details rather than treating “end-to-end encrypted” as a complete security evaluation.
Sync through infrastructure you control or choose
Self-hosting or using a service you choose can avoid relying on a task app’s own hosted sync, but it still involves infrastructure beyond one device. dayGLANCE documents browser-local storage alongside self-hosting and optional Nextcloud or WebDAV sync. Kairos documents offline use without an account, local encrypted storage, and optional synchronization through Nostr relays selected by the user. Relays are external infrastructure, and the project documentation is not an independent audit.
These models may suit people comfortable managing a sync endpoint or choosing relays. They add decisions about availability, configuration, and recovery; “user-controlled” does not mean “no servers involved.”

Provider-backed sync with client-side encryption claims
123 ToDo describes both Cloudflare D1-based sync and Google Drive AppData sync, and its site claims client-side AES-256-GCM encryption. Because these options use cloud services, it is not a zero-server design. The encryption description is a vendor claim and was not independently verified in the cited material.
Compare apps by the questions that affect your data
Product pages document different parts of the picture, so use the same questions for every app rather than relying on a single label such as “private” or “local-first.”
Quick Recap
- Where is the primary copy? Is task data kept on your device, in an account-linked service, or in storage you operate?
- Is an account required? Can you use the app offline without signing up?
- What sync is available? Is it absent, optional, provider-operated, end-to-end encrypted, local-network based, or self-hosted?
- Who holds the keys? Find out whether encryption keys remain under your control and what happens if you lose access to them.
- How do backup, recovery, and export work? Confirm how to restore tasks after device loss and whether you can move your data elsewhere.
- Does it work on your devices? Check platform coverage and whether it supports the reminder capabilities you rely on.
- What supports the security claims? Look for implementation details, public code where available, and independent audits relevant to the app’s threat model. A product page’s claim is not itself an audit.
Make the trade-off explicit before moving your tasks
- Decide what you want to keep from the provider. If your priority is preventing a task-app provider from receiving task contents, local-only storage is the clearest model among these examples. If you need several devices, consider whether optional encrypted, local-network, or user-controlled sync better fits your needs.
- Test the recovery path. Before putting important reminders in an app, learn how to back up or export them and how restoration works. A privacy choice that leaves you without a recoverable copy may not serve your needs.
- Check the exact sync configuration. An app may be local-first by default yet use external infrastructure when sync is enabled. Identify the service involved and what the app says it sends.
- Assess claims at the right level. Treat “zero-knowledge,” “encrypted locally,” and “end-to-end encrypted” as claims to examine, not guarantees. Check key custody, what data is covered, and whether relevant independent evidence exists.
- Revisit the choice when your routine changes. A single-device workflow may make local-only storage practical; adding devices or shared tasks can change the balance between provider access, convenience, and recovery.
